Ok, firstly since this IS a W.I.P. Board, I will have to post a game thats work in progress.. so here you go.

Secondly.. This is what I'm mainly posting about:

I really don't like it (and neither does anyone else) when people come into the W.I.P. board, and post a short story line about they're game, and maybe, if they have a wip game, theres nothing to it, then they don't post any screenshots...

Here's m suggestions to the mods: lock any thread that doesn't have a few screenies of the game, a game that only has simple camera movement (espesially if its just copied from another program and they hope that noone will notice)..

I also encourage you to show demo's of your game..

Noone seem to check the forum rules, and just recently, everyones been posting just anything that they've been working on for the last five minutes..

Besides, if your game has hardly anything to it, noones gonna care about it when you post it, though if you do have alot of stuff in your game, i.e. enemies, multiple levels, effects , rather than simple movement, lots of people are gonna like it, and you'll get more and more good comments.

If you can't be bothered reading, then here's what I'm basically saying.... READ THE FORUM RULES!! they're not guidlines, they ARE rules, and I think people are being let off with too much these days, rules are rules and should be obeyed.

I hope I've made my point clear

EDIT:

If anyone wants an example of what kind of threads I hate, you should check out the thread called 'My 2d RPG Game / Engine' by Alien 001 (sorry Alien, but its the truth), you check inside and all it says is "Work in progress/ sorry, no code" or something.. : http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=58365&b=8

If you want an example of what I think everyone would like, then you should check out Dumbo and Cool by Drew Cameron, when I tried this out as soon as it was posten on the WIP board, as far as I was concerned it was already a game, just a bit short, had enemies, little things you could collect, cool effects, being able to swap players, releasing people from cages, more that one level.. That's what I think everyone here expects.. : http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=51555&b=8

thing is Zotoaster, newbs don't take notice of these threads, I made one, but it just basically copies the sticky, and well newbs just go 'oooh WIP forum, I thought of a great game, lets post' and well we can't really anything about it I'm afraid, unless the mods can shove a agreement thing where you have to play a rules game to get passed so they go aaahhh need progress....and bugger off, those who post crappy wips get burnt

hmmm, i think there should be a thing where if there isn't a screenshot in the thread you can't post, that would be cool

Quote: "READ THE FORUM RULES!!"

Hmmm... so you're hoping that someone will read this, in the hope that they will read the forum rules. Considering that nobody worth flaming will even LOOK at any other wip threads, just go "omg wip, I oughta stick in that idea I just thought of" I sincerly doubt that this will work.

What we need is for Jess to go on another of his crusades Either that, or maybe a "report bad thread" button. Only question is, how would it work.. ordnairly (i.e. other forums) it'd go through the PM system, but apollo doesn't have PMs. Everything else would be too slow. Maybe we can convince rpgamer to start acting on this board like he used to on team requests

All in all, I think the best solution is to log on to teh IRC and yell at Mouse or CR until one of them takes a look. Speaking of which, I haven't dropped in for a longo time... 'scuse me

I think in this situation its the posters rather than the thread starters that are the problem. If everyone just ignored dud threads, they would sink to the bottom(unless the creator bumps it of course..).

Remember how the team request had a thing where mods have to aprove the post for all members, new and old? That, i think is a good idea.

If you're so smart, why are you reading my post?

i know, that why im saying that if you dont have screens and stuff then you cant prove that you're making a game, so the post should be deleted..

unless you got rich to insert a special condition for the WIP forums...
The poster can't bump it, only other people.

Zotoaster,
You're right about people posting total crap here.

However, alot of the time, it borders on the rules ( maybe they forgot the screen shots, but there's a game exe to download and a basic outline of the game to go with it. Or, maybe the game-play's crappy, but it's a full-fledged engine that just needs some levels made for it, etc ), and as such we are lenient(sp?) and let it stay put and wait to see if any more progress happens.
Generally if it's a crappy post, someone'll flame it resulting in a lock anyway, or it'll just be ignored, and drop off the bottom.

Basically, we tend to give people a chance, which doesn't always work out, but Hell, this is the "Work In Progress", so we can't expect them to post a full game here, can we?

*Shrug*

Jess.

Certainly there needs to be a way to prevent people from posting WIPs when there is extremely little work done. The problem arises because of the difficulty of a solution:
1. Screenshots must be posted - people could post useless screens
2. Mods have to OK every thread - waste of Mods' time - they have it hard enough already
3. Thread starter can't bump their thread - if something important got done on a real WIP, nobody might see it.

And of course, noobs don't read any threads like these, as has been said many times already. (I don't take credit for this, give that to Seppuku)

New, Request a Bump! If your thread has fallen below lines, you can Email a mod (we really need a PM mod feature, would be sooo much easier) and request that thread to be bumped!

Good idea Merranvo, I'd go with that, as long as there would be a way to just press a button to request the bump. Some of us here don't have access to email, and would rather continue to use the forums.

woot! Credit!

Anyway I don't think there is a way to stop them, unless the mods come up with a clever procedure for posting that gets the rules across and doesn't annoy people themselves, then we stuck with it and well we shouldn't complain because well we're gonna have to live with it, like kids that wet their pants in primary school

In any case, while I agree that his lack of a description of his game/engine is a good enough reason to have his thread locked, he deserves some recognition as his engine really is a work in progress that is actually 'progressing,' and is already more than what alot of people here can achieve.

If you want an awful, god-forsakened(though slightly humorous ) work-in-progress thread with no screenshot or download to redeem itself, just search for a post by Timesoft. His game's story was literally like this: "Your wife is death. How? NO idea. But it is murder. REVENGE!!!!!!!!!"

Im not trying to flame anybody, but I hate threads like this more. I think this is simply some sort of call for attention to get more respect in the community. If no one reads the stickies, who do you think would read this thread?

This sig has been dullified!

STOP POSTING STUFF WITHOUT ANYTHING IN IT!!! ............................AAAAAAARRRGH!"

how about one saying 'calling ALL!!! amazing team request, a lotta money, newbs, not so newbs and pros' I dunno, if you really wanna do something catch their eyes so they see it and go oooooooooh thats interesting, and money is always one way to fish em in, so promise them money and well mans greatest strength is greed isn't it of course you'd have to get permission off of a mod but I would aim for forum admin for permission, and you would have to come up with a really good name of the thread so the majority will read where non newbs go ahhh this'll almost sort out the newb crisis, and newbs will go coooool a halo game oh hang on a minute newb posts get us severely flamed....
