Why doesn't anim8or export .x files? When I choose to export a sequence, it only lets me export .3ds. I wanted to export an image. Is there a plug-in I need to use .x files or am I stuck with the lowsey 3ds files for the rest of my life?

DBC comes with a free .3ds to .X converter. It's in the "tools" directory.

And, ironic as it may seem, Anim8or doesn't seem to export animations.
IIRC, you can export a skeleton with your model and animate it in another program, like CharacterFX, but I've never used that approach.

I edit my posts, and so should you!

The free 3DS to X converter is actually based on one of the 'secret' commands - they're in the downloadable DOC help file, but not in the on-line ones.

3DS2X "Source Filename", "Destination Filename"

I doubt you'll get it to work. I did that 3DS2X and a few other converters, and none of them made the animation work in DBC. I tried over 10 free modelers and again, none of them exports animation properly in DBC.

So you're saying that unles I fork out for an expensive 3d animation program (I can't afford anything) I won't have animations in my 3d games?!!!!

Um, that's because Anim8or doesn't save animations in any format other than .AN8 (Anim8or's internal format). You can however export static .OBJ and .3DS models with Anim8or.

I suppose that depends on your definition of "expensive". Fragmosoft's Fragmotion is a perfectly usable program that costs less than $50. If you can figure it out, JTEdit is free (but buggy and really hard to get to work). Another free choice is Blender although most say that it's user interface is abysmally difficult to learn. So if you don't want to spend anything, you're just going to have to buckle down and learn.

*cough*

Another good, inexpensive choice is Milkshape. I've used it for a good while, and it was probably the best $20 I've ever spent in my life. (I know that's a horrible line but it's true)
I'm in the process of writing a tutorial for character building in Milkshape that I hope to release soon, and while I haven't quite learned how to animate yet, I hope to get some practice in and include that, as well.

Yes, milkshape is good for animation. $20 shouldn't be so hard to get...

Hey, does Milk Shape real version export working animations in x? I tried making a simple animation, then exported it in the trial version and db didn't see any frames or movement. Just my still figure. Can some one help with this?

Also you have to use the JT Direct X Exporter and make sure the settings are just right or it wont work in DBPro either.

Sorry - can't help as I've never used it. One of the keys brings up a screenful of keyboard options I think - maybe the Tab key?

That's the problem, the keys it says that should be used, don't work... I'm thinking of creating an animating software myself.

I tried it and it works fine on my pc, but It isn't the easiest to work with. IT would of been better to click the limbs or something.

Hi there

Why not just get JT Edit at www.jtedit.com?

It's great AND allows you to export to .x format WITH ANIMATIONS. But, you'll need DX 9

Hope this helps
