i believe it actually started as "funny ass" but then over time the last s got softened, screwing up its meaning. a lot of common british sayings have had the same fate, to the point of not making sense any more.

I don't. I believe its just like saying "thats funny as crap", without the ending. Plus, saying "thats funny ass" doesn't make much sense either.

Well you cant comment on how the brits speak (well.... apart from all this innit nonsense.... yaaa mmeeean?). Its called English u know. I wonder where that language came from ..... Although on most software ur language is English(United States) There are two versions now are there? It makes my blood boil when i see that. lol, I live in the countryside, but I haven't got any crops o' me own. Live in a little town called Bourne. Its in the countryside (sort of), but its just before entering the 'real' countryside (the fens... urghhh)
We must have the shi##yist roads in world round here too. There's been 5 accidents on the same stretch of road in the last 3 months

I think 'amercanisms' are stupid, even some americansisms have taken over the English language, 'jail' is an example, I only ever see 'Gaol' in history books, it annoys me, if you speak UK english to people who speak US english, you have to change what you are saying, a*se is ass, Gaol is Jail, e. it is damn lazy!!!!!! innit, mum is mom/ma, dad is pa, nooooooo!!!!!!! Just change it by 30% and call it american, and shut us up! (oops I said innit, arggghh I gotta punch myself!!!!!!)

Dare I step into this snake pit? I truly believe the idiom is, "That's funny as..." and is meant to save delicate ears in "mixed company". The ellipses indicating the removal whatever obscenity one would normally compare funny things to. As for writing/speaking The King's English, or American English... well, I'm something of an Anglophile, but I'm from New England, so whomever said New English a few posts ago would only be addressing one of many English dialects. You wanna get really nit-picky (there are some lazy colloquialisms for you), you need to go back and write like The Bard or Chaucer. What do you think of Cockney rhyming?

What's interesting is how the Chinese say ma or mama for mother. They've been using it for thousands of years and it wasn't an influence from western culture. Interesting.
