Ok, I have this extremely irratating fault with my PC, that I've been living with for about 5 months now. And I've finally cracked

One day, I went into my computer, and it amazingly had no idea which program to open folders with , and the 'open with' dialog appeared.

Luckily, I switched it to 'Browse', and selected Explorer.exe
It worked; but with one minor hitch. When ever I open a folder, it now opens in a separate explorer window. I've selected the 'open in same window' option under folder options; but obviosuly there's something passed onto explorer.exe when the folder is opened, since it still opens in a new window.

Can anyone help me fix this issue?

This may do it...

* Windows Explorer
* Tools
* Folder Options
* should be an option saying whether clicked folders open in new or same window

...hope it works !

uhh... sounds like you curropted your registry...

This is fun actually! delete the registry tree HKLM\SOFTWARE\ and your system won't know what to open anything with (and won't work afterwards...) only fix is to reinstall your system, unless you made a backup.

I am not a guru, but what you are describing can be fixed without the hassle of waiting for one... and it takes only 5 min (IF YOU GET A BACKUP) but it takes 3 hours to install from the windows CD.

Personally, take my advice. Get a dos bootable backup and restore program. And reinstall windows, install all needed software (NOT GAMES, and NO INTERNET STUFF) and make a backup. Why pay for some random error to be fixed if it takes only a few minuits to restore your system? You do have to reinstall the games though... and DBPro if you don't have a DVD burner (to put the backup in).

Nice suggestion, however;

a) I have a 300gb HD

b) It is split into about 5 partitions

c) I don't have a backup, so I don't really feel like reinstalling all.... 6000? Apps I have.

The registry itelf isn't corrupt - its just this single (or multiple) entry(ies) that are broken for the explorer thing. I just ran an in-depth registry scanner; and it must of fixed every problem.... except the problem I'm asking about

uhh... that might be your problem... 6000 apps.
Downloaded?

Backups make my life easyer, but now I don't see how you can even start with one, you'll need a 150GB hd to back up the 300GB, at least. OHH, that will be a mess.

Registy Scanners only fix select issues, not all issues. So I stand by my assumption that it is a curropt registry value, until the guru arrives. Kills me, and tells me wrong.

I bought a pack of 20 double layer DVD-RW's... so that lets me back up at least 180GB, lol

Have you tried checking your computer for spyware? Perhaps one of the many spyware programs have hijacked explorer. I use two (both are free). Ad Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.

go to Start > Run and type "RegEdit"

Then expand the tree and browse to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > Folder > shell > explore > command

In there, I have 1 entry:

Do you have this?

and spell check makes mine easier...download the GOOGLE toolbar

and based on what you don't know from other posts, i wouldn't take your advice on anything.

Just do as Nick Thompson is saying, and compare your Registry entries compared to others.

Why is your hard drive partitioned into five times?

I hate people that partition there HD too much...

Its just annoying! Why do you think theres Program Files and My Documents etc...

Your stuff is allready seperated! No damn need to partition, Unless your running a different OS on the other partitions!

Yeah, I have the exact same entry too. Looks as though something else is causing the problem

If you have multiple partitions, you can store docs etc. on separate parts of your HD. Not only is it better orgnaisation; you can also preserve alot of file when you reformat, since you only reformat the core partition (C:\) as opposed yo wiping everything.

Please don't hate me

Yeah but doesnt it mean all the other partitions slowly grind down to a halt because they arent defragged or w/e...

Unless you defrag them

And I dont hate you...

(And I got DBClassic today! W00T!... I dunno why I bought it... I allready have DBP - Maybe I can write some tutorials for it though )

If its not solved, it may be worth asking in the Windows newsgroups.
It does sound like a registry problem, or more likely, a virus has hijacked something.

However, in the File Types list (ie registered file types), do you have a line for folders ?

It should say :

(None) File Folder

AtomZ - its got an A. Its got a Z. Now its just needs U
