X-Ball 3D
Created by Daniel Pender and Alastair Zotos

Demo finally works! Now everybody download it!

X-Ball 3D is a remake of my friends game 'X-Ball'. It started out as a 2D game, with no graphics, just simple colored boxes as platforms, a circle as you're player and little star-shapes as enemies. Then we decided that since I was able to make 3D games we would make a 3D remake of it that would look much better and would be better to play. It is very inspired by Sonic Adventure 2-Battle, infact, the all the music in it (apart from when you pass a level) is from that game.
Normally when I made W.I.P. threads I just posted anything I made in the first 5 minutes, this time I have a two level demo, with lots of stuff in it..

Features:
2 levels
Coin collecting
Enemy AI
Physics (for player and AI bots)
Two Players (there's no difference between them apart from their looks)
In-Game tips
Explosive barrels
Particles
Cel-Shading

Stuff to add:
Difficulty Selection
Pause Menu
Saving
More Levels
More Players
Different Stage Missions - e.g. Collect all the coins..
More/Better Sounds and Music

Stuff to Change:
Intro Animation (Daniel didn't spell 'Studios' correctly, and he didn't spell my name right either)
Music at the end of a level

Bugs:
Collision - Sometimes you fall right through the ground if you fall onto it from too high
Collision - If you jump it's possible to jump through a roof, I could use some help with this..

Screenshots:

Demo:
http://files.filefront.com/X_Ball_demo/;4044626;;/fileinfo.html (14.24 MB)

The Aim of the Game:
Roll around your little ball and reach the end of the level, collect the coins and try not to get hit by the enemies.

Controls:
Up/Down/Left/Right to Move
Space to Jump

Notes:
You CANNOT attack the enemies, don't bother trying..
I didn't add dieing because it got in the way while I was making the game.

Stuff I forgot to do before posting the demo:
Again, I forgot to fix the checkpoints in the second level..'¬_¬ nevermind

Team Requests:
I could do with somebody do texture the levels.. I don't think texturing separate limbs all the time is the best way to do things

C&C Appreciated

I know the demo isn't working but it would be alot easyer for me to judge and give ideas to the game when i know how the gameplay looks like. I think it's kinda hard to give ideas just by looking at some screenshots. So i will wait to comment until i have tried the demo

Sometimes I find mipmapping (for th floor) can make the game look less blocky - open up an image in Windows Imag/Fax viewer and zoom in to see what I mean...

[EDIT] :

Oh... Sorry if you're slighty confused about that it is signed under as the nerd when the profile is KLU 007 I first figured out that i was logged in as him when i had posted (Yes... We know each other personally and i'm sitting at hes computer). But.. Oh well

I like it!

I especially like the first level! With the enemys and all the platforms you have to jump Makes it hard Also i like the feature we're you can collect coins! Makes you wanna get more, and more of them! Although i didn't enjoyed level 2 as much. There we're a place in the level we're you constantly rolling on thick platforms(Somwere at the end of the level), I don't see much action there
But else i really enjoyed it! Nice menu and intro movie too!
Keep working on this project man

P.S : I also liked the control of the player ball

@The Nerd / KLU 007

heheh thanks

i didnt like the second level either, it was mostly just to test that i could do level swapping because ive never done it before.. now i need to make another model... but i cant be assed , i guess im just gonna have to lol

i like the controls too, theyre pretty much the same with the enemies movement too (tip: because of the good/crappy physics, if you're being attacked by an enemy just keep mving back and forward and he keeps slipping right past you, perhaps ill make it that they get bored after cahsing you for a while, but then again, they're robots, what do they care )

any more comments?

Now I actually played the demo myself. And it is quite awesome!
Although(as said), the second level gets a bit repetitive. The first level was good. There's a few bugs too:

At some point the music stops. I think you should loop it

And when you hit the water, and holds down the spacebar, you can actually jump on the water, which makes you quite invinsible

And it looks like some of the enemies will follow you even if you jump down beneath them, but they'll stay in the same height all the time, as if they don't take notice of the Y-axis.

But a cool looking game I'll look forward to the release.

Yes the second level is pretty crappy, and im working on a different one as we speak, this one is going to be much longer, harder, and better looking

as for the music stopping, well thats because there's no more music to play, i really should get round to putting more in, or even making some (I cant loop it cos then it sounds weird and slow)

As for hitting the spacebar thing.. i don't know whats wrong with it, but i didnt bother stopping it do that for while Im making the game cos it came in handy

As I said above, I cant be bothered making collision for the enemies, but perhaps when it's starts to bug me I'll do it

That text is something weird. But i think it has something to do with that thread you started in the DBC forum. Also, the white floor makes it difficult to see the different platforms. Nice idea though...

yeah, once ive got a fair bit done with this second level ill try to sort out the text

the white floor wasnt intended, i wanted toi make the lighting better so you could see the platforms, i think ill try out that normal map generator

woohoo second level remade(its very hard, took me like 15 minutes to pass it) (not textured, i need a guy to do UV mapping for me), ill post some screenies soon, i wont release another demo though till ive made some more levels and bonus levels

ill keep you all updated though

[edit]
Idea for the third level!!

ages ago i got this thing aclled a 'superplexus'

its like a hollow sphere, and inside it theres a big... path lets say, and its all twisty, and the aim of it is to twist the sphere, and roll the ball on the paths.. now tell me thats not a good idea heheh

and as if thats not enough, heres a great idea for another level

you know these mazes, they have holes in them, and you need to tilt the maze and nevigate a ball through them? need i say more

That level is looking awesome! Downloading now

The third level is quite good. It is easy to cheat, and skip a lot of it. I haven't played it through, but it's late(in Denmark), so I have to make this quick, and get back to test it out some more tomorrow:

In the first level, I noticed that I got a checkpoint, while I was a level ABOVE the actual checkpoint that's located at the bottom of the "stairs". I'm not sure if im making myself clear, but I am quite tired.

But I'm off to get some sleep. I'll see if I can post tomorrow
PS. I like the music

oh, and about the cheating thing,(that is if you're actually talking about the second level), i tryed my hardest to make it cheat-proof, and I think i did quite a good job concidering that the level was so cramped together

I have just tried it I didn't complete it though
The reason why i didn't was because i we're getting annoyed of the collisions:-s Some times i just fall right through and needed to start all over again( That's really ruin the game ) although i found some other strange bugs. In level 1 when you are at the bottom floor of the spiral platforms. You can just jump right through them and get to the highest floor pretty fast instead of following the spiral path AND when you complete level 1 press space and you will find yourself starting at the latest checkpoint in level 1 again instead of going to level 2:s That also anoyed me

Oh and by the way the way you climb on just dosn't work with level 2 at all! all the small path you need to follow(That goes up) is so easy to fall down from because of the way you climbing:s

I know, i know. . . the comments i just wrote wasn't really nice. But i can say a good thing about it, i like the way level 2 is build on! Really nice! All that need to be improved before it would fit in the game are better collisions!

But i'm looking forward to the next demo.

@the nerd

i know, ive posted i whole load of questions on darkbasic discussion about these collision prolems.. as for the starting at the last checkpoint... well im not sure what you mean, BUT, i think i set it so you actually go to checkpoint no. 2, just so i could quickly get to level 2 while i was testing it out

the climbing in level 2: well, on the whole it is the same, because you need to jump to get up it, though i know what you mean, took me ages to get up it too

but i guess if i didnt get bad comments it would end up as a bad game

Can I be the first to post cheats?

Jumping on water: Just press and hold space and you won't drown. This can get you a long way in the second level and avoids life loss.

Jumping up through platforms: This is more useful on the first level at the point with all the platforms leading up in a spiral, just press and hold jump to get right to the top very quickly.

Very nice game so far.
Can't wait for level 3

ok, I just got rid of the checkpoints cos i didn't like them, im going to "borrow" Drew Camerons idea of quicksaving (if it is his idea)

after that, im going to add explosive scenery, you know, boxes of TNT that you walk into and explode, like in crash bandicoot instead different

THEN, i start work on the third level

after the third level I'll post a demo, but before Ill post my progress and screenies, etc etc..

hwy all, my borhter came up with a good idea for a boos that would be pretty easy to do and I was gonna ask people here what they think, then I might put it in the game

ok, since you can't attack you need to get him to chase you, and out of the ground there are poles sticking out, and these poles are spikey, and the aim is to lead the boos into these poles..

but theni was thinking myself that there could be something extra, and heres what it is:

after the boss has went into the poles he goes paralised for a little while, then you need to jump onto him and he becomes slightly smaller, and you keep doing that till he dies, and the thing about him getting smaller is that its harder to lead him into the poles

just a thought, what do you all think?
