As some of the more attentive geeks around here will have noticed, there's a story on slashdot linking to a graphical demo called Drivey.

In itself, it's not all that amazing. It's a vaguely interactive demo, but it's nice to watch. Where this demo excels is in STYLE.

It's almost beautiful in it's simplicity.

(Incidentally, try pressing F5 to take the car off auto drive - this guy has some respectable car physics!)

Well what can you expect when you get slashdotted? The site's working again now, though.

I've read up on this guy's creation and the reason it's sooo damn sexy is because he uses bezier curves to draw everything - the entire scene is drawn using vector shapes. Simple when you know how eh? I guess that would also explain if you turn the car around why there's a bit of perspective distortion ...

I think you missed the point. The demo is all about the style, if there was shading it would no longer be the same piece of work. It might look nice in a different way, but it wouldn't be Drivey.

I thought the point was the vector-based rendering engine.
Given everything is shaded anyways, I don't see the issue with putting in a bit of colour, light and shadow.

Think about it, it would look just as good and the same style if say the grass was a subtle green, and the buildings were casting simple shadows that dimmed it. Same with the cars and the lights.

Nothing wrong with them being a single colour, but being black with the road being black. The only way to tell them apart is because they have lights. Yet you view Wireframe mode and clearly there is a box for the car and it's wheels which is being shaded black because it renders infront of the road.

I think you're at a odds with other people's sense of style. Yes it's cool because it's vector based, but it's also visually appealing. He's saying the visual appeal would be gone if it wasn't so monochromatic... the simplicity, the brutal edges, the whole feeling is part of its charm.

The point is it's damn cool. Duh.

Got this on /. yesterday but thanks for linking here adr

Oddly, I haven't noticed many nice tech demos since around the time .kkrieger first came out. Except for nVidia and ATi's obligatory new card advertizements, which obviously 99% of the world won't be able to run for a year or three.

If I looking for blog

It's more a case of practicality adr.
If this was purely seme screensaver rolling demos with a few keys to tinker with to change it's graphical effects. I'd agree it's a nice style as-is.

However the user have provided pretty much full control over where you go in the environment (turn off automatic movement and you'll see what I mean). Problem is you can't really see what your doing past the main road which is only outlined by the road moarkings.

I doubt it would take much away from the overall style just to tweak the colours from being a pure silouhette. I'm just looking at this more from a practial standpoint of what the technology could be used for rather than just the simplistic style.

maybe the same color with different values? It would make it eaiser to see and possibly retain much of the same style. Or better yet more markings beyond the road markings.

Ian - You should check out their other demos--- not just the FPS one. They have tons of them on this site and from their links:

As stated on the site, this graphical demo is not a game, the only reason you can control the car is because the author decided to add in a little 'bonus'. Practicality isn't an issue because you're only meant to be watching.
