My parent's hard drive crashed for absolutly no reason yesterday, it make a really weird noise when trying to access things and the motherboard wont detect it as startup (on theirs it doesnt, but on mine it will, it just freezes at bootup) there was a LOT of important information on that computer (names and numbers of hundreds of people for wedding invitations, and resumes, years of taxes for people, etc) and i was wondering if anyone knew of a way to scavenge the stuff off of it, if at all possible?

There are companies which can recover data from just about any bashed about hard disk. Try a search on google.

Yup there are... but they're not even close to cheap.
£500 cost me to get 25GB off of a damaged HDD. The more you want the more expensive it gets too.

Haven't read the small print, but this looks pretty good; (UK. not sure about US)

'No fix. No fee'

Also;
Quote: " It may be that your computer may not even recognise the drive, or it is making extraordinary noises - If the hard disk is making ANY strange noises, then switch the computer off immediately. We can successfully recovery data and, in many cases, return it within 24 hours!

I had an IBM do that to me - one of the Deathstars.. Whoops.. DESKstars

I just tried to destroy it by throwing it at a paving slab (data was relatively pointless), however I ended up with a broken (but in-tact) hard disk and a badly cracked paving slab

That's not a virus, that's a head sector crash -- especially if it makes periodic clicking noises when trying to access the hard drive. DO NOT TURN IT ON OR LEAVE IT ON as every second it stays on in that state it destroys more data .

Unfortunatly data recovery from that kind of crash never seems to get cheaper than $500. When it happened to my PC I just decided screw it, I'll start over, and send the HDD in for replacement

If I looking for blog

I bought this nice little tool about a year ago that'll give you access to any HD via the USB port. Really good for data recovery when you can't boot off the drive. It may work for your problem... if the drive isn't totally destroyed.
