Is it my imagination or has quality of hard drives decreased ? For one of my desktops, I've been through 2 hard drives due to drive controller failure, and now the current new one has bad clusters. Yet, the hard drives for a Windows 98 machine (which is on 24/7) has no bad sectors and works fine.

I only use Western Digital drives... they last a long, long time (at least for me).

Mine went in under a year... I've tried WD (drive controller failure), Maxtor (ditto) and now Seagate (bad clusters)

My sisters went, her computer is not so old, and pakard bell, the only probs I've had with my even older pakard bell are the OS and the dated graphics card.

I had a maxtor on my old pc, its worked fine, of course my motherboard went before the hard drive, so can't say on how long it lasts

My 4gb Phoenix Fireball 0120 lasted me 7 years

....and its still going strong (but in a different computer)

I've heard that the vast size of the disk space on the hard disk itself can affect its lifespan. I'm not sure why though Would explain why my 4gb HD lasted me nearly a decade (wow, that makes me feel old)

Yes, I've got a feeling that the bigger the hard drive is the shorter its life span (due to the need to the tightening of the magnetic pulses).

Its very annoying though - the 300GB Seagate one is only two months old has had a drive controller failure and bad clusters. Time to send it back...

I had an issue earlier this year with my 120GB IBM/Hitachi. It didn't have bad cluster or any sort of failiar, it was simply refusing to use anything except PIO Mode 4 in Windows.

Wiped the drive and reformatted it, been good as gold since.
Right now I only have Hitachi and Western Digital. Although I trust WD to an extent, I've not has as much good experience as I have with IBM/Hitachi.

Fujitsu and Seagate I now avoid like the plague unless I really need space, cheap and fast. The number of those that have died on me is just ridiculous. On the whole I don't think it's Hard Disks that are getting worse, I think it's because computers are now letting us run them basically 24|7 now.

I mean I generally only turn off my computer once a month, if that. It's always going. Yet 2-3 years ago, it would be turned off each night when I went to sleep. Not sure what has changed my mind on letting my computer run longer, maybe it's because Windows XP doesn't inadvertently crash during the middle of the night for no reason. But whatever the reason I'm not the only one who's started to do this trend of just leaving my computer on until I have to change hardware.

Hard Disks are constantly running really, sure with the new power systems they'll shut down after a while to conserve themselves, but this is still atleast 9-10hours a day of useage. It's also bad for them to be constantly powered up and down.

Well as I said, provided you know which ones to avoid like the plague you should be alright. This said if your having this much trouble it might be time to think about a new Mobo.

Yes.You can add me to that list. It`s amazing how long it`s been sinse formatting or defragging aswell. That could decrease it`s life aswell. having to constantly access diferent parts of the drive.

the modern high capacity drives run a lot hotter as well, if you use a midi atx case or smaller you might want to stick an extra fan in or add drive coolers, I found my drives always threw serious errors or crashed the machine a few minutes after booting when I had the second one placed in the chassis next to the original HD (both 160mb drives), I added a rear fan and placed the second drive in the floppy bay so they where not pressed up to one another and I havent had a single error since.

Yes, I think it's probably related to all the GBs of size they stuff into hard drives these days.

My old computer that runs Windows ME (yes, I know, but there are some programs that I have that won't work on XP, so that computer's kept in the dark ages ) has a 12 GB hard drive that's lasted 5 years

I clean my computer from viruses, spyware, crap (quickclean cleans it), then defrag, twice a week, and my pc has no issues!

?

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is running way too hot for some reason - though I do think its more probably poor construction...

yes..It never has said "drive controller failure, bad clusters" or anything else. Maybe it is the brands, but I use many..maxtor, seagate, western digital, many "name" brands. That is my experience

It might be over heating. Fans for harddrives have become very popular recently. The latest pc I bought has one for it`s 200gb harddrive. I was going to get one for this pc but I have so many power cables that split power cables into 2 that I don`t think my power unit could take any more.

you could get an upgraded power supply, some have two or four extra connectors, you can`t have enough cooling imo, as long as it`s atx form factor it will work just fine.

From experience, Samsung drives RULE. I bought a 6 gig a long time ago, brand new for $130 (lol), I had dropped that thing soooo many times. That drive was incredible, the drive never did actually die until my friend accidentally dropped it on a tile floor and busted parts of the interface off.

I used to hail to WD, but since then, I've owned many of their drives and I must say they've all died. One "brand" inparticular is horrible. It's something like "Magnetic Research" or something similar to that. I bought one (because it was cheap) for a friends computer a long time ago, it died 1 week later. Then the network admin at school had bought one for the "media" computer, an 80GB 7200RPM drive, it died 3 weeks later. I mean, there are CRAP, stay away!

What I might do (when I get a replacement) is get a hard drive case and a IDE to USB convertor, just in case heat is the problem.

My twin Raptor (10000RPM) RAID 0 setup has run fine for a year or so. This was after terminal failure on an old 80Gb Maxtor. Did upgrade the PSU to a mighty 650Watt gold plated effort (3 fans all to itself) after some power related resets.

Oh, and to add a point to the Maxtor camp, I got a 300Gb external Maxtor recently, and it's very nice. Pretty fast (7200RPM) and looks great (nice metal look). Working well so far.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I've usually used WD drives, had 2 go bad on me. The first one was a refurbished drive from a PowerSpec, the other was brand new 8.4gb. WD replaced it no problem though. I never had problems with Seagate drives. I won't touch Maxtor, they're junk.

Best harddrive I ever had was an IBM drive in a laptop. Quick, super quiet. That's back when IBM made their own drives instead of Hitachi.
