Prices per gallon keep going up eh. I just had to stop for gas and barely had enough cash on me to pay for the drive home. Five years ago it would've been worth three times that... of course now I'm getting nostalgic for an era I wasn't even driving in

You still pay per gallon in the USA?

Here in the UK we gave that up many years ago. The price was about to increase above £3 per gallon and 'they' considered that to be a psycholgical barrier so instead all prices were per litre so that people 'thought' they were paying less.

Now of course, the price is about to go up above £1 per litre so what will happen now? Charged per millitre?

Heh, saw something the other day, from a government official, who basically said that our amazingly high tax on fuel was good, as we don't feel the rise in fuel so badly as other coutries (eg. the US). ie. the percentage increase is a lot lower as we are already paying s**tloads. Got to love government.

Also read that it costs less per barrel to bring petrol to the pumps in the UK than (on average) in the US. Got to love it.

Oh look, my car really doesn't like lower petrols (eg. 95 unleaded), and has been built to run better on higher petrols (eg. 98 unleaded). Better get a better wallet for the pounding it's going to recieve....

Ps. I filled my car up with 40 litres of petrol yesterday, and it cost £38. That's $68.21. Heh, I remember filling my car up in Dubai with about 50 litres of petrol for about £4.50. Good olde days...

Did you know that a good alternative for Diesel is rubbing alcohol and Cokking Oil? Problem is its illegal, or at least I think it is. Funny video BTW!

BioDiesel. Can be homemade for about 17 cents a gallon

Dunno if it's illegal, but I saw a program (Top gear, or some such) where they used something like cooking oil and a small amount of *other* stuff. Was actually better performance than Diesel. Think it was discovered in Scotland. Was amazingly cheap until the government cottoned on when all supplies were used up the local area. Then they put a major tax on it I think. Apparently still worked out half the price of diesel, but could you then be bothered to muck around (had to treat it for a few days before using if I remember rightly) compared to when it was like 10 times cheaper?

Although wouldn't suprise me if the government bans it due to some rubbish safety concern or other. Until they can sort out a major major tax (so more expensive than petrol companies - their tax buddies) as per usual of course. Not as if petrol is actually that expensive. Just the tax.

The price of gas in England is high, yes, but let's be realistic here--- how much "country" is there? I mean, it takes little time to drive from end to end. If you live in a large country like the US or Canada, where it's like 9000 km from one end to the other, people just wouldn't pay for the same high price as you to drive to the supermarket that's a half hour away. I'd imagine gas prices on little islands like Mauritius are astronomical.

Wrong. If I remember rightly we are pretty much the highest anywhere. I remember a holiday in Mallorca having well cheap petrol.

Yeah, but how often do most of you travel from one end to the other? Couple that with the fact that we have serious road traffic here (everyone piles into small areas). Basically we sit there in oodles of jams getting rubbish mpg to commute from A to B. So looking forward to tomorrow now....

About BIODIESEL, it is a combination of mainly vegatable oil, and a little bit of "real"(technical term) oil. Here in Portland, OR, they have just built a brand-new factory which creates the fuel. I have seen several cars that are using the new fuel.

use an ethanol fuel cell, they look cool but i dont have the plans... anyone have plans for that type of think cause i probably could build it

Avtur (Aviation fuel) works well in diesel cars.

OK, so it is much more expensive but being in the RAF I can get my hands on it for nothing.
Whenever a Tornado is refueled it always vent fuel which is collected in fuel drums. When they are full the MOD pays someone to come and take it away. Many people are aware of this and being the kind hearted citizans that we are, we save the MOD money by taking it away for them and not charging them a penny

The UK must use a different method of grading Gas. 92 is the best you can buy here (grades 87, 89, 92). I think ... I am sure about the 87 and 89 but the 92 may be 93. Since I can only afford 87, I am too lazy too look 2 whole pumps to the right

Nope. But I'm probably in the minority. I probably do no more than 40 miles each day. But considering a few miles of that is the M4 (hells own road), then I would rather trade it in for needles in the eyeballs. And I really love my car too. Wasn't my fault either. I lived between 1 minutes walk (honest, with a pub inbetween) and about 45 minutes walk away from work (no more than 5 minutes drive really). Just we got bought out by a company in Slough (watch The Office, we are around the corner, basically in the same s**thole) and had no choice but to commute (either you were made redundant, or you commuted; no-one wants to live in Slough - and no-one has moved there from my old company in 4 years). Heh, and a department from those offices then used our old offices. Got to love that double whammy of commuting. How come the government doesn't make companies pay tonnes in taxes for that sort of thing? When we end up paying through the nose for petrol. Gits.

I think we should encourage americans to make proper cars with proper engines, thus halving the global requirement for petrol and drastically increasing the cars performance.

Edit: I commute 70 miles a day, mostly 95mph on the m3 and m27 (little traffic my way) and I put in £40/week. If I was driving some sort of american pickup, that would be about £150 and I'd be sitting at about 75mph and praying I didn't have to use the brakes.

I drive about 150km a day to and from work. Because I have to fill up my car every 3-4 days, it gets really expensive.

Because everyone and everything I know or care about is an incredible distance. My parents live a good 100km away, my work loop is 150km, my other family members live anywhere from 100km-1,000km away. I feel like I spend at least half my life in a car. :-|

Our family's got an suv which sucks it up, but what my dad commutes to work in is a little honda civic hybrid. That thing gets a consist 60mpg. Only need to fill it up once or twice a month, it's great.

Gas was about $3.10 /gal in CA when we went on our car trip there to all those fun places, you can get tourists to pay anything.

Heh, I remember reading in the Top Gear magazine how someone took a Smart car (horrible tiny city thing that you can actually park, erm, vertically to the pavement and still be no more out than most ordinary cars) over to the US and proceeded to travel all the way across the country (wideways) for something like £80. That normally lasts me about 400 miles normally. Erm...

Apparently someone asked him what car it was. He told them and they asked if it was an electric car (looks like one). He replied that it actually (rather suprisingly for something like 70mpg) was petrol. They then asked if that was a new type of gas. Awww. Sweeeeet.....
