I have an onboard C-Media sound chip. It plays MP3's OK, But seems to use a lot of extra resources. The Sims2 really struggles upon loading, and plays the music twice, like an echo. I get the impression that I have 2 drivers running at the same time. Is it possible to have 2 drivers running at the same time? Can I delete a set of drivers from my computer? They seem to be all over the place. I do not use my sound-card (Another C-Media but with 5.1 surround), and have taken it out of my computer, because it competes with the internal card even if I turn my internal card off in BIOS. So what is this problem? Other games that struggle with the internal sound chip are GTA3, and Rollercoaster tycoon 3.

Thanks!

Pincho.

it might help to know your mother board.

if you have two of exactly the same drivers then remove one for sure.
be carefull tho somethings have similar names when it comes to installed dlls.

is there a flashable rom in your motherboard that might increase the BIOS features or correct mistakes int he BIOS.?

is there a way you can try another simple sound card against the Cmedia 5.1 and see if there is an echo.

In your volume control panel do you have any extra features that might be similar to Audigy re: listen live., this might be causing an echo.

in dxdiag does your sound play with the test.?

Did you remove some drivers using safe mode?

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

there was a patch to remove the echo from early C-Media drivers, I had the same problem, you just need to update and it will go away as far as I can tell from that description, check out who made the mobo and find the driver updates off their site (well?? worked for me).

the average IQ is 100...but the people that took the test where trying to look smart. most people don`t go over 50.
Area 51?, I`m more intrested in what they have in areas 1 to 50

Oddly, I had the same issue with SimCity a couple of years ago. But I had a Creative Labs AWE card.

I've had some issues in the past using a SBLive! card.

Your signature has been erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120...

Make sure that Hardware Sound is enabled in the settings, I used to have an echo problem in Battlefield 1942 because Hardware Sound was disabled, and now I have no problems.

Sig changed for lagging up browsers.

Lack of memory could be one cause - the other is possibly hardware acceleration of sound is causing problems.

Hmmm. Perhaps a trick question. Is "Sound" a nickname for your brother who keeps poking you in the eye when you use the computer?

Heh, seriously though I would go for the conflict of drivers. Try uninstalling the card from the hardware list, then rebooting. Hopefully XP will sort it out. Failing that, how is it set up in the BIOS? I remember once fixing a friends PC that took flipping ages to boot up (5 minutes) and was because she had an onboard sound card, and her son (without her knowledge) had installed a proper sound card. They conflicted and it took like ages for it to basically cancel one out over the other. Turned one off in the BIOS and all was tops.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

When I uninstall my drivers, and then install them again, they appear twice in the list. I have an old motherboard... can't remember the name. Something like ESS 7530..

Hardware accel is on.

Have tried many C-media drivers that all do the same thing.

Try switching the hardware acceleration off.
