"A partnership of companies from Japan, China and South Korea will unveil a new Linux-based operating system for local markets later this week in Beijing to challenge Microsoft Corp.'s dominance, a news report said Wednesday."

Think they'll succeed?

They SAID that given enough time a million monkeys with typewriters could recreate the collected works of William Shakespeare... Internet sure proved them wrong.

I don't think it'll succeed just yet. There is still quite a bit of software support and development that needs to be completed before Linux really starts to take the market. The big push in places like sourceforge are starting to bridge the gap in creating software that is compatible with Linux.

In the back of my mind I still think China will try to rule the world in the future. They are already stealing the global market with cheap labor costs.

In Asia probably, the market there thrives on home-grown stuff.
However given 70% of Microsoft's Piracy is within India, Korea and China (both in Asia) my guess is it won't affect them that badly.

Especially with Microsoft's recent Anti-Piracy Crack Down. That will only help to fuel this new conglomerate project.

As far as Europe and the United States are conserned though, I doubt even if it succeeds to userp Windows in Asia that it'll have much effect here.
