Played a bit of HL2... it was ok

Nowhere near the perfection of HL1 (and I still believe that the atmosphere in HL1 was much much scarier)

So, I dug up my old HL1 CD, and popped it in the drive. I was really looking forward to it actually. Couln't wait to pop out a couple of shotgun shells on zombie-fied scientists

That's where the vision ended though... I got several 'This game may have compatibility issues with XP' messages, but I ignored them. Got to the main menu, pressed play game.....

"Please insert The Half-life CD-ROM"

You stupid a**wipe of a game!! It is in the bl**dy drive!!

So I gave up after a while, and started looking for cracks on the internet.I know this post will probably get locked now I've said that, but I promise you all, I have a perfectly genuine verson of Half-life.

Ok, so I know reach a 'crack site' - but there are no cracks So I'm kind of annoyed now. A valid HL CD which doesn't even work or play and there aren't any cracks either

So I decided to download the latest patch anyway. My version is a 'late' retail version, so I was reasonably certain that it had already been patched to 1.0.0.9. Checked the patch site, however the pacth doesn't mention anything to do with the CD, or Windows XP fixes.

Has anyone else had a problem with their version HL (anyone had a problem with the CD?) and how did you oevrcome it?

Did you patch Half-Life to 1.1.1.0 before installing? Also, do you have more than one CD drive on your PC?

I have a sneaking feeling that the newest Half-Life updates remove the CD checks anyway. 1.0.0.9 is a very old version of HL.

No, didn't install 1.1.1.0

And yes, I do have more than 1 cd drive (I have 3, well; DVD, DVD-RW and CD-RW )

If the latest update removes CD check like you say, then I shall track it down now. Thanks

EDIT: Am I going crazy or were there many more posts in this thread a second ago?

Um, try using Steam? Obviously the original Half-Life wasn't meant to run on XP, so run Half-Life with Steam. It will make your life easier.

In which case you can always install from one of the other CD drives as a last resort.

I would, but I'm not sure how
I know that sounds stupid, but do I just install it normally? Since I came across this 'Register a product I already own' button. I decided to press it, enter my HL code etc. I then recieved 'Invalid code'. I assumed it wouldn't do anything to HL1 in Steam unless I registered it.

Basically I have no idea what I'm doing I hate steam, and Valves website is very poorly designed (no links, no information, no detailed upgrade instructions etc.)

I've tried each of the 3 drives, and recieve the same problem. I even made a 'virtual disk image' using Nero, and it still didn't work.(apparently the disk is an Overburn)

Not taking this off topic, but my gosh doesn't the graphics look bad of counter striker, or is it just my monitor.

It's like, when someone throws a flash grenade, when the flash fades, it takes a while to load the wall, it's like loading an image from windows 1 LOL, it starts with a blur, then cracks, then normal.

This takes around 30 secs, by which time you'll be dead!

Dang.

You could always try contacting Sierra or Valve for support, although I suspect you will get better service in an HL forum.

When you have multi-optical drives then games will use D:\ (Windows XP will always use this as your base Optical Drive unless you specifically change it) as your optical drive.

This aside Half-Life DOES NOT USE CD-ROM Authentication.
It uses a Serial Code Authentication System, and if it's invalid it ONLY stops you playing online.

Also has been noted, if you own Half-Life 2, then you also have Half-Life: Steam. If you install Half-Life (or use the Serial Code to Associate it with your Steam Account) then Steam will detect it an allow you to use that version.

No updates will change the bizarre problem that I only seems to affect you. See this might be why you can't find any cracks, because it there is no real protection.

If you want to use the game without playing online though, you can use the serial 1234-12345-1234 (it's a common knowledge Serial Valve sent out to people who had issues playing Single Player, you'll have your Steam account banned from online if you try to play the game online though.. so you have been warned)

Yes sorry, I thought all HL titles used SafeDisc but it seems that just the expansion packs do.

As far as I'm aware only Blue Shift and Counter-Strike/Counter-Strike: Condition Zero use CD Authentication.

Those are the two I don't have (or rather I have them for the PS2 and Steam but not normal versions). I know that Half-Life and Opposing Force don't have it, as the CD is only used for music in them.

Not necessarily, if you bought the bronze pack you'll only have HL2 and CS:S

half-life 1 works with xp if you have steam. i should know i play TFC almost everyday.

just enter the cd key in stream with the -'s and it will work. failing that if your cd key dont work in steam, contact valve explaining the situation.
