I believe having a new stat under the avatar could be very useful:

Language: Darkbasic Pro

I think it should be a dropdown selection like the Time Offset section in the profile page... it will always show under the avatar and never be blank (the default should be Classic).

Could it be added without too much trouble? What other stats would be useful to us?

wouldnt that limit you to one language. What if someone uses DBP and Java.

You're right. Maybe checkable boxes by each language people use... that way it's as many as you use.

Limiting it to DBC/DBP is good enough. That way you have a bit more of a clue as to why the noobie is screaming his head off.

I think it would be good as well to have a section that lists the computer spec. Saves having to post it every time.

Been discussed before I think - as for the result, you can cast your eyes left and see if it was implemented...

We could always do this. Most of the time people put in bogus info in the location anyway.

I like forum rank. Based on amount of posts and helpful posts. So the side of a first time user might say: "newb" or "grasshopper" or "baby" then a more advanced user could be: "Frequent user" or "man of many posts". Stuff like that.

Personally, I think the single most important modification we could see happening on the forums is that noobs cannot make any posts until they have read all the stickies at the top of the board they want to post in.

Too many questions are posted when reading the stickies would have got them the answer a lot faster. Too few new users use the search facility as well.

And posting questions without stating the version of DB you use can be a pain too - the answer could be different depending on what they have.

But that's just me...

maybe a seperate section on the forums called FAQ that answers many frequent questions. kinda like a sticky but all in one part of the forums. and move posts that deal with frequent questions to the new FAQ section. So if a noob comes along he wont have to use the search he can go to the FAQ section which hopfully will be condensed to no more than 3 pages. Then the noob will have no excuse to reanswering a question. I think that might be a great idea. but I dont know bout anyone else.

Once the FAQ is in place the newbie can go to a test page asking questions about the FAQ... if the newbie passes the test... the newbie slap is gone. Never pass the test... and always be annoyed by the newbie slap.

I think in the selection of languages used only languages these forums need to be in the list. Quickbasic and GWBasic wouldn't be on the list.

I think the forum should have something like this:

That way newbs would be publicly scarred, like the stocks.

Or perhaps 'within the last year' so that it's possible to rid yourself of them if you're good for long enough.

But newbies wouldn't use that area to show languages used. If it's a forced thing when people sign up... pick at least one language to complete the profile. It'll be on the left and easier to see than a signature.

@ionstream

But a few people have been slapped simply because the mod concerned has disagreed with them or there has been a mis-understanding of a joke/comment somewhere.

And what happens when people start competing with each other to see who can get the most slaps?

They'd get banned, I guess.

I think the good outweighs the bad.

But without the slap count the problem wouldn't be there in the first place.

If people get slapped because they've done something wrong they learn from it and improve, they might want to start afresh and not be reminded about what they used to do.

If they continued being a prat then they would get slapped again and eventually banned.

I see no reason for knowing how many times someone has been slapped.

Quote: "That way newbs would be publicly scarred"

But then they wouldn't be able to improve without some people judging them because they can see what has happened in the past.

I don't want to start an arguement but in my opinion there is almost zero reason for having a slap count.

soapyfish, well said. Its just bloomin' ludicrous and will lead to user being prejudged when posting. It might be a very informative post but may be ignored due to the fact they have been slapped X times...

What about having just "This user is currently being slapped."... no slap count?

The main thing i'd like to see (as said above) is the languages each person uses. The user slap isn't a priority. I'd also like to see the ability to upload code (in the source) not work for anybody that's got a newbie slap (as TDK said it another thread).

This did happen to me, however, it probably was deserved. Nick could have believed I had "flipped". I could of attacked other people. However, it was a misunderstanding.
