ok, so that's old news. But here's the latest patent granted to Nintendo.

http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=6,935,954.WKU.&OS=PN/6,935,954&RS=PN/6,935,954

I'm afraid to see what other patents this may create.

Your signature has been erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120...

So they want to patent natural human reactions, to put into a game. Novel.

Wondered if anyone has patented a game idea where a player has to eat, or he starves to death.

Wow... everything described in that was used in a Capcom game called Clock Tower 3 for the PS2 (2003 I think).

Well if you didn't notice this patent was filed in the year 2000. Therefore Eternal Darkness wouldn't be a prior art.

That's stupid... that doesn't seem like something they should be allowed to patent at all

Lets have a race to see who can patent using guns in games first. Whoever wins gets the royalties for any game made with guns after the patent... serious $$$$$.

I was going to say - Eternal Darkness had this.

Halo's Ai was similar - each bot had its own 'fear' meter, as that increased they acted differently.

I know, but the point is this patent was filed before these games were released, therefore they're not prior art.

If we live in England that doesn't apply to us right? Since software patent laws don't apply to us?

I've seen a few games with the sanity gameplay, the Thing had it...

Hmmm, Roleplaying? Sanity levels? I remember that the Cthulu paper RPG had this idea, back in the 80's.

So, where does the 'novel' or 'inventive' step come in here? It can't be because they converted a paper RPG to code can it?

Y'know, maybe the US patent office should get a few more geeks in, and a few less lawyers.

It's good that this sort of crap isn't enforcable over here in the UK & europe, but it's a shame that because it is enforcable in the the US, this patent will probably be avoided worldwide anyway.

yeah the paper rpg was called call of cthulu.

set in the early 1900 - 1940's but not always, you played the role of a gumshoe or a detective or a reporter or something similar and explored weird phenonoma<spelling

if you saw too much spooky stuff you eventually went mad

if your an xfiles fan and played call of cuthulu you will see a dramatic co incidence except that scully and moulder are set more in the future.

michael moorcocks elric of melnibones rpg Stormbringer which i might add was wicked had insanity components as well with binding demons or spirits into items, sometimes they could break free and would be well cranky!

chainmail was the first inception of dungeons and dragons and gary gyjax did a "bill gates" by ripping off his university mates hard work when they built it.
you could go mad in dungeons and dragons if you were hit by psionics or used psionics in your campaigns.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (the pnprpg) also had insanity points - and a whole system for what quirks and phobias you got, and the crazy, pseudo-medival 'cures' that were available.

Little Fears (pen and paper also) also had a 'soul' stat that was lessened on seeing horrible things. Run out, and you go mad, spiritually blind and an NPC.

Nothing new under the sun.

Oops, that wasn't meant as a mean remark, sorry David I'm just a little wary when people make statements like:

So I kind of got defensive hehehe..
