So I have a hard drive with two partitions, one has Windows XP SP1 installed, and the other has Ubuntu Linux. Of course when I boot my computer it jumps right into Linux. What I need is to let me select which OS to run(dual-boot) but from what I understand with google, it has to be done before Linux is installed. Is there anyway to make it dual-boot once both OS's are already installed?

Or if I just re-install windows over everything, is there a way to keep my files(programs) from the original windows?

I think the ubuntu installer should have done it automatically. So there might be some other problem.

Best thing to do is install windows first then linux. The linux installer will then see the windows partition and configure the bootloader so there is an option to boot windows.

That's what I did , I guess I will just wipe it all and try again, configuring it all first.

Hey try installing GRUB or LiLo, they are both dual boot programs.

Fedora Core 4 does it automatically too i think.

Turns out grub WAS installed automatically, just the option to list boots went by so fast i never saw it. It give me like 1 second to press a key, never knew that. Now its all set AFTER i erased all my files and reinstalled many times, o well.

Most people are sensible enough to backup their stuff before installing a dual-OS system. Especially if you don't have much experience with Linux as it is.

Well, im not a very sensible person, also, the lack of cd's/money/hdd wouldn't allow me to do such a thing.

Yes, that would help too

What you could do next time is send yourself your backups to a gmail account or two. Might help in the transition.
