This is really frustrating and annoying to me. Here comes a horrible tragedy in South, and instead of Americans coming together and supporting each other as they did on 9/11, we have a bunch of jerks using this as another way to blame Bush and gain political ground. What's even more annoying is that many people are now saying that the reason for the apparent lack of help is because America is so racist that we just don't care about black people. As a white American, this really offends me, and it should offend more people. I think that there just aren't enough people who have the guts to come out and say it.

Every race is full of racists. Typically a member of a race is racist towards a member of another race because they think that person is racist against them. A lot of Hispanic, Asian, or African American kids at my school give us white kids weird looks, do that whisper while looking at you thing, and call us crackers, but then I turn the corner and hear white kids using "beaner", "gook" and "nigger". I have no doubt if I were say Asian, I would feel as though it was white, hispanic, and black versus asian.

My best friend is going to college and taking psychology classes. Out of the whole class there are 3 white people. One of the white people (a girl) was doing an oral report and the teacher (Asian) blurted out to her "How does it feel to be white?"... she hesitated and said "Well, I feel ashamed to be white." Then the whole class (everybody but the white people) started complaining about how the textbooks were written by white men (even though they were written by women). It's hard to learn anything when your in a class full of racist people... of course they don't think being racist against white people is racist.

My friend even told me before class begins the teacher shakes the hands of every student... except the white people. California is getting crazy.

That's gotta hurt. I mean, I can't stand that sort of irrational way of thinking. I feel the UK is moving forwards, even in times of islamic fundamentalism, and accepting muslims etc. and becoming more tolerant. Black people?? That's still an issue for the minority of racists, but for the most part, I think when people consider who they think are "outsiders" black people don't even cross their mind anymore - it's people from the middle east.

Yet, even now I hear people beginning to understand immigration policies and stuff, and appreciate what these people can bring to our country, and appreciate the need to save true asylum seekers from harm. Maybe it's down to the fact our government constantly addresses the issue, and whenever they get it wrong our media hammers the crap out of them (come on Dimblebee!) calling them racist, making them back pedal. We have a few extreme parties aswell that have shaken people up a bit - seeing them get a lot of votes when essentially they are race hate parties has shaken up the "majority".

Clearly there is still a large minority who are racist, but I do feel the majority who were previously a little sketchy with race issues are feeling more comfortable with many of them. Maybe it's just my perspective of it and the people around me.

Being somebody who's grown up in this new, sequaky clean PC environment it's certainly getting harder and harder not to be racist.

I've been friends with people from a mixture of races for years. In fact myb est friends are Indian.

However, the problem is that in today's PC society lots of boundaries are being drawn up. You daren't protend somebody's a different race to you, just about hte only way you can refer to African people is ethnic (black is a no no I hear) and you've got to live in a society that tries to fool itself that everybody is equal in both number and in terms of race.

Why can't we just be left to be? I didn't even know what racism was until I was quite old, by then I'd made numerous friends from different races to me. All this racial discrimination PCness starts to point out differences.

I'd wish people would stop drawing attention to it so much, because once a couple of generations filter through our society the problem would be almost gone.

Oh right! So its just a conicidence that the majority of people who couldn't escape from Katrina (because they were too poor) were black? And its also a conincidence that in every state minority groups are the poorest? And its also a coincidence that the majority of people excecuted by Bush as President and Governer of Texas were young black men? And its also a conincidence that 10,000 black voters were barred from their consitutional rights by the Republicans in 2000 - the final conincidence being that 90% of black people vote for the democrats. (This was in Florida, where buish won by about 500 votes, 90% of 10,000 is 9000 - catch my drift).

Personally the only racism I saw when I grew up was towards English people (in general, not colour). Good old Wales. After that (when I went to Uni and eventually came to live in London) the only racism I really ever heard was from Indian people. I mean serious hatred stuff. I had an Indian friend in University who once, in a lunch area, started sniffing and commenting (loudly) how it suddenly smelt like s**t from the end of the table and how he wanted to puke. Confused the hell out of us simple country bumpkin welshfoke, until we noticed a black guy sitting on the end of the table. Erm.... And the next time was when I was in Dubai. I was meeting the local area manager of Emirates travel (important Indian bloke). First thing he tells me after greetings is basically a "Paki" joke. Full on. Didn't know where to look on that one. And at the time (being a lot younger and coming from white welsh boy land) was seriously confused with what the hell he was talking about ("Paki" jokes are about Pakistanis, and Indians hate them).

Apart from that, I've never really seen much racism in the UK. Ok, so I'm white, and can assume massively that I've missed a lot of what does go on. But it doesn't seem to overspill into many areas by the look of it. Although once when I was travelling through Birmingham (suprise suprise) I noticed a lot of skinheads (with Nazi slogan tatoos) on the other side of the street shouting at our side. Looked around and noticed we were in a croud of black guys shouting back at the Nazis. Things kicked off (with a few police too) a bit and I had to drag my too interested Irish friend away. She was having way too much fun. First riot and all (I've been to Swansea when there is a Swansea - Cardiff match on - oh yes).

When I was a kid the only racism was burning down the local English git's holiday house. But fairs fair....

I think I used it once and teacher corrected me. I thought it was stupid too but after hearing things like "brainstorm" change to "think tank" your sense of common sense is dulled

Coming to think of it I think she was a bit too sensitive...

Well said. I didn't know what racism was myself until I was 11 or 12, and naturally I had already made friends of many different ethnicities. All the reverse discrimination is making the world a much worse place.

The race/class difference in some areas of the US is a relic of a very different world 50 years ago where racism was common. The trends of inheritance will take a while to wear off, but it's already gone a long way.

It really is a case of children being taught to be racist. Children don't give a rat's about the colour of their friends skin, or the lilt of their accent, or where their parents happened to be living when they were born.

It's not until that fateful moment when dad shouts at the telly when someone's on, or when mum says "Don't play with them."

And suddenly, you're taught to hate your old friends without reason.

i was unfortunate to be born to a rascist dad... well, when i say rasist, he basically really well respected and asian/oriental/black person that held on to their traditional values, but dispised all the others...

can ijust mention that we already have an islamic flag? little known fact: St. George came back from the crusades a muslim, and that red cross being our flag... is his flag...

"Black People" used to be considered the more offensive remark, everyone used "Coloured People" instead. Now the terms have kind of switched over in PC terms.

As the world becomes more accepting of races different from themselves, I'm even terms like the N word (don't want to type as it could be considered offensive) will become every day jokey or friendly words (it is to a certain extent already). I mean you can swear at and insult your friends, and they know it's all in good humour, although you can still use them to offend of course .

My opinion on the whole racist thing is that hoping everyone will eventually not even notice that someone is of a different race is futile. The bottom line is, people from different backgrounds do look and/or act differently, and you can't help but notice, and therefore how you act around them or treat them is inevitably going to be different. We can just hope that people don't actually see different races as inferior to them.

Ha ha, I just remembered a program I was watching on one of those crappy music channels about "Most embarassing celebrity moments" (I was bored ). It had a section about this woman who was on a reality TV show, some chef based thing, running a restaurant. She complained in front of the cameras about "two fat jewish ladies" being awkward, and got kicked off the show and fired from her actual job. The fact was they were actually "two fat jewish ladies" .Would people have disapproved if they had been "two fat ladies with red hair", or "two fat un-shaven ladies"? Just because she described them using their ethnic group meant that she was "being racist"?!? Her brother was even a kosher Jew, wtf??? That is the kind of hyper-anti-racism that is just as bad as racism itself.

hamish, i was watching that, you'll find that was the apprentice: USA.

i think if i was a Jew i'd have been extremely offended by that remark. that other contestant, being a jew WAS offended, and i know that if i was in a cafe and someone reffered to someone as "islamic" in a derogatory term, i, being a muslim, would probably punch him in the face.

just because racism is over rated, blown out of proportion etc, doesnt mean it isnt there.

Hmm, I guess you have a point. Hearing her side of the story you can see that she is not racist, she just didn't think about what she said before she said it. There is this guy in my physics class who constantly jokes about this other guy sitting next to him being Jewist (he isn't actually Jewish, it's just a personal joke). You can see he does it all in good humour, but I get very pissed off with him sometimes. If there were any Jews actually in the class he'd probably be in intensive care right now being fed through a tube.

I guess people can be racist without actually being remotely racist themselves. The problem is it's hard to distinguish that from the actual type of harmful racism.

I think people should actually try and react to being called Jewish (since that's been the example thoughout), by thinking "And?". If you are Jewish them you should have nothing to be offended by. If someone implied that some other offensive thing was linked to being Jewish, then yeah that would be wrong. I understand that some people view things differently, but that is just my view, not nesecarily the right view.

Killswitch, you cannot look at these statistics (if they are true) and assume that the cause is modern-day racism. There are many other factors involved in the corollation between African Americans and poverty.

Consider this:
Many politicians, in search of voters, try to appeal to poor blacks by expanding welfare and other socialist programs. Ironically, it is these very programs that keep many African Americans poor, because they give blacks the mindset that they cannot or should not rise up and become independent. Many poor blacks probably are afraid of becoming richer for several reasons: no welfare, and fear of envy by friends and family members.

You want to know the reason why so many blacks voted against Bush? Bush will not expand socialist efforts. After all, America should be after progress, not relief. Also, I have a feeling that your readiness to blame Bush stems from a bias you have against him. This is a bit childish.

Killswitch, have you watched Cops? Next time you see it take a piece of paper and count how many black people are arrested vs white people. It's not Bushes fault that black people do the majority of crime in America. I know that's going to sound racist but facts are facts. White people do actually do criminal acts.

When I was a little kid my mom refused to buy me a 1 cent chocolate football. I thought... it's just 1 cent... so I took it. In the car my mom asked me where I got it and I said the store. She knew I didn't buy it so she took me back into the store. Got the stores owner and made me apologize to him. Because she made me own up to my crime and embarrassed me by talking to the owner i'll never forget it. I even saw him recently and reminded him what I had done so long ago... we just laughed.

I've noticed that black people (and mexicans) consider being in jail as a status symbol. White people DO NOT believe that way. Perhaps that is why there are more black people in prison than white people.

i dont understand the ignorance among black people about being called 'black' , im black and i have no problem with being described as black for it is an accurate description.
as for crime, thats the fault of the individual, but people have to be extra perceptive and avoid the obvious traps, such as drugs and street gangs because theyre a quick ticket to a local pennetentary.

i agree with grog about the status symbol thing, i know people in my neighborhood who say that there brother of dad is in attica of kaksaki like people in other neighborhoods say their brother or sis is in harvard or yale


as for poverty, that is a generational thing and it is not easily escaped unless someone makes a real effort. i think that for a majority, with a decent education and real effort they can achieve better

ya know maybe just they are stupid...I mean really how your raised will determine how you are.... so probably blacks are just screwed from slavery and really didnt have a foundation and raised a family from that so family values were lost...I mean slavery ending is a new thing only a few generation back in the USA so that could be it IDK but If I was raised and wooped all the time I dont think I could have a proper raised kid either ;P...............but anyway its ignorance.....its just common in blacks..IDK why....its t3h home t3h home is to blame

The majority of poor people are children and elderly. Of the rest, most are working at low paying jobs.

Poverty is a necessary part of capitalism. In order for a few people to be a whole lot wealthier than most people, many people have to be a whole lot poorer. For example, where I live, a small house on a small lot costs a half a million dollars. Land speculators have made fortunes on real estate transactions. Why not? That's just free enterprise. Meanwhile, thousands of people must live on the street and thousands more are crowded into substandard living conditions.

No one here is supporting racism, Aura. We just don't like it when minorities try to blame all their problems on white people, most of whom have black friends and don't consider race as an important factor. This post is about progressivism.

Harggood, this just simply isn't true. Individuals in America have the choice to make accomplishments, it's just more difficult for some. Capitalism is the fastest and most efficient way to make a country wealthy. No matter which Communist or socialist country you look at, you find "ordinary" citizens far, far below the standard of living for people in "poverty" in the U.S.

Teh Go0rfmeister, I can tell you're one of those who prematurely assumes that racism has to do with it. It is this exact kind of paranoia that I'm talking about that is ripping America apart.

Racists are arrogant intolerant ****heads.

I think racists are racists due to growing up and experience, like a lot of people are anti-chav because every single chav they've come across a complete w******s same priciple applies to racism, I am only anti-horrible-chav, as I know chavs that are nice, actually, I hate everyone thats an a-hole. Am never racist.

And yes racism is a huge issue, always has been, and among millions of other things should be sorted

The reason why - statistically - more young black males commit crimes in America is because they're so often from poor backgrounds with so few oppertunities that they're forced too.

Also black men are - again, statistically - more likely to be given the death penatly for the same crime that a white person has committed. Black males are most likely to be given the death penatly for raping young white women.

And these are facts.

i say give em death anyways whether they be black white or blue with pink polka dots but while i agree poverty is an important part of capitalism, people shouldnt be poor like that i mean come on

Dunno if there really forced to, i think its more like they choose to just because there background is poor does not mean they can not apply themselves and rise above it no matter what there race is. Also its not just black people plenty of white and spanish also fill those shoes at least where i live. Some people just take the easy way out or so they think at the time by selling dope or petty theft to make a fast buck instead of getting a job.

I have plenty of friends that are black people and they prefer to be called a black man or black woman over a colored person anyday. Personaly i feel colored person sounds more racist then a black man.

Also i work with alot of hispanic people and they hate to be called a mexican they prefer spanish person since most hispanic people where i am from are from el salvador not mexico.
