I found this while running demo after demo for the feature I want. I still don't know enough about it to tell if it can paint textures on 3D objects, but it's starting to look positive. It has a lot of the features you would expect from a very expensive 3D application.

good for you... wrong section.
plus it's already in a "please read first" post in the correct section.

gah! i'm getting so sick of these damn stupid "I love this application so much so lets force the rest of the world to love it too." posts. There's a search button on the forum, oddly enough IT ISN'T JUST FOR SHOW!

3D Studio Max is a lot easier to use than blender.

Blender and Max are both a pain to use and learn .

Nobody tell me to use the latest version this time, because I have and it's just as confusing and backward as it ever was. It's like these programs are designed for students, because your constantly learning them, there's no way to totally own them because they're so unweildy.

Frankly I've never found a single package that did everything I need, and I own Rhino3D and Max - funnily for DBPro Milkshape is better suited than most packages costing thousands. Coupled with the free versions of Lithunwrap and Gimp and you have all you need to get models made and into DBPro.

Well, that might be because one is a few thousand in price, and the other is, well, not.

I disagree, Max gives you a really bad pain in your wallet.

Not directed at anyone specifically, I know some people are dedicated enough to their craft including you Van B, but I find it intriguing how many people have 3D Studio Max on this forum, including many younger members of the forum.

"I've done all my models in Studio Max, but I can't get collision to work. I can't afford £10 for Nuclear Glory, what should I do?"

Yeah, there are probably a ton of illegal copies of Max floating around here - luckily for me I had this gullible manager in an office I used to work in and was able to convince him how much we all needed Max, when it turned out that Max could'nt actually make coffee or answer the phone, it kinda gathered dust until adopted by me .

The simple truth is that most people can't afford it, I know I could'nt find the money quickly if I needed to buy it. The thing is that there's no alternative sometimes, often Max saves my neck with a single feature. For example, limb pivot points! - the pivot points on limbs is something that Max just loves to put right, and Max is really the best tool in the box for prepping hierarchy animated models (mechanical stuff). Really Max isn't worth the money for what I use it for, not when you look at the packages that can easily get results in DBPro. Frankly if my copy exploded I would'nt buy it, I'd rather spend the money on 2 laptops and a couple of hundred quid worth of good value software - but that's only because I'm working on my own modelling app, really if I still need max after that then I've failed.

Most 3D Programs worth anything are actually extremely expensive.
Personally I've found that Softimage|XSI is the best for it's price.

$495 (£250) gets you 5.0, for an extra $50 (£25) you can get a free FireGL which although are crap cards; will still out-perform most desktop/gaming cards in a 3D application.

Personally I've always found Maya to be the most friendly in terms of how to do things. Sure your always learning new things, but that's better than hitting a brick wall in what you can do without adding to your pipeline time.

Unfortunately there's just no Budget-Range Alternative to the big packages; and with Max, XSI and Maya now having free editions even though you can't export; it means you can't get the Mod market. As they'll often prefer to illegally use a product or use the free specialised one. So the budget market is now extremely limited.

I believe someone has managed to make a .x exporter for Gmax. I didn't look into it any further, but maybe someone has more info.
