Im a good guitar player, but I never really looked into actual music (as in, I cant read sheet music too well, takes a bit of time) I'm figuring out this song (wake me up when september ends, by green day) and the harmonics are pretty important in it. Im pretty sure the harmonics are playing the same notes as the main guitar is playing chords, so I figured knowing what notes the harmonics are would probably save me a hell of a lot of time other then trying each individual note.

Could anyone answer my question? I'll put it simply here

If you play a 5th fret harmonic on High-E, what note are you *actually* playing?

Thanks

note A

Having said that, there is such a thing as false harmonics. Not sure if you know what I mean but if you play a note with the pick and as you strike the pick note you mute the note with the thumb on the pick you get the flase harmonic of that note.

sorry if that makes no sense but I can demonstrate if you like

My roommate says that's like the easiest song to learn(As is most greenday), its all played with like the same few choords over and over. Just start hitting the guitar, and eventually you will get the right tune.

Im sorry I cant answer you question Im not sure bout harmonic notes cause I suck at harmonics all together.

but Dimebag is the best harmonic player ever you learn his stuff is your into screaming pinch harmonics. I bet Greenday is just a natural harmonic cause I dont think pinch harmonics are their style

Indy - Its a VERY easy song to play altogether, just the harmonics are a pain to pick out as there are a lot of them. After listening to them live, it ACTUALLY might just be a guitar with a lot of effects on it playing regular notes....

@Cattle: Thanks

Yes that's the correct term. The other harmonics are in fact called "natural".

i dig the artifical ones, especially when playing with a nice thick distortion. you can make the guitar "talk/cry" so to speak.

gah, these discussions make me want to jam...

go away! LOL

I can do them no problem, I just can't figure out how to explain the technique to someone else.

I can't remember the name, but there's a song either by van halen or sammy hagar that is almost completely done with harmonics. I think mabye it was Hagar. I remember seeing him talk about the song in an interview on VH-1 a long time ago. It was weird watching someone like him struggle to play a song. (no way in hell could I play the song though)

Your signature has been erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120...
