Hey guys I'm looking for a good RTS and have narrowed down my choices to Civilization and Empire Earth, but I have a few questions.

I noticed there is a different versions of each (Civilization 1,Civilization 2, Civilazation 3) and the same for Empire Earth. Are those games different from each other in the terms of time period? What exactly is different?

What time period does each game take me through?

In YOUR opinion, which do you think is better and why.

I'm also open to hearing about other RTS's. Thanks.

I prefer EE. That does everything from romans to post apocalyse robots.

I only got EE 1 this summer (was holding out til it got cheap, got in in canada for $10cdn! That's like £4!).

I suppose EE2 is just better.

Civ's games take REALLY long. Don't even think about a LAN game. BTW it's a turn-based game, not real time.

Ew I hate turned based games. I just found both of their websites and it looks like Empire Earth 2 is much better than Civ. 3.

Any other good RTS's you guys know of? What about Age of Empires?

If you don't like the turn-based Civ 3 than go with Rise of Nations. Its like Civ but without turns.
<edit> Age of Empires III coming out October 18th! Can't wait!

CIV is not an RTS
if you noticed, RTS stands for REAL TIME Strat.
CIV is TURN BASED
EE is Real time
completly different games, and i will not even compare them

When I compare all the games you told, I prefer "Age of Empires". This is the only game, where I bought every part : all expansion and packs. It's really worth it.

@Joel
Not neccesarily true. The latest Civ exapnsion has an option which turns it into a RTS. It is much faster and harder.

But only in multiplayer if i recall correctly.First Civ 1,2 and 3 are not from different eras, because you play civ from 4000 b.c. to 2050.Civ 1 was published in 80s or early 90s civ 2 around 96 and civ 3 around 2001.There are 2 expansions and many mod packs.I recommend you go to www.civfanatics.com to learn about a game and also to download Rise and Rule mod from the forum.Hope this helps.

empire earth didnt quite do it for me. it sounded good in theory, but in practice it just doesnt quite work somehow. i was hoping ee2 would have fixed the imperfections, but then to my cvomplete and utter dissapointment it seemed excactly like ee1 but with better graphics.

I'm not a fan of the "Age of Empires" Style of RTS (like EE), I personally believe that if it was built more like Warcraft 2, that game would've kicked some major buttocks.

I personally didnt like either of the games too much. I mean, I liked them, but they just didnt keep my attention, which is no good in a game.

The thing I hate with any of these type of games that well...

A) Takes 10 minutes to get a full troop group
B) Takes 10 minutes to walk all the way to the other baddies building
C) Takes 10 minutes to fight, and your army still dies anyway...

But it's addictive.

I do like Age Of Empire. I was addictied with that game for about a year.

Empire Earth and Age of Empires are both to war based for me. I like Ci's treaties and stuff makes things feel like your running an empire. EE and AoE feels like a constant killing and the AI for EE is really hard atleast for me it was.

aoe3's out already? wow, that one slipped me by. i also pwn aoe 1, 2 and conquerors

i got age of mythology but was kind of dissapointed. even with the new style of races and tech tree, it was still fundamentally the same game, hence why im not too hasty to get aoe3, im worried it'll just be the same as aom, aoe2 and aoe.

Thats interesting. Just the fact BenDstraw said that he likes Civ. because it makes you feel like your in control, and EE and AoE feels like it's just a bunch of killing makes me rethink my decision for EE2. Civ 3 is turned based though, which it would have to be if it was so detailed. That way the user can get the most out of the functions in the game. I downloaded a trial of AoE and I was hooked on it. But two things I don't like is that you go through ages (enlightment age, industrial age...) so fast. The other thing I don't like is the 'killing'. It seems to be the only way to get another nation. Maybe I'll just by Civ 3 and EE2 lol.

AOE3 isn't out yet. It comes out during the second week of October or something like that.

Civilization 4 doesn't seem like it's out yet. Either that or not local. Looks pretty sweet now. I'm actually leaning towards a civilization game more. I don't like a game where i'm trying to build up my stuff and I get a random raiding party (not even a formidable force) coming up to my city. What the heck do they think they want? Gold? (Laughs then squishes them). War without reason? It's just stupid. I like Civ. better. Looks more political. But war is fun, I need some of that. And Civ looks like just the right balance.

Well age of empires has always been set in bloody war based time periods thats why it is so much about combat.
