anyone else think the possibility of that man from survivor spending 75 years in prison? i mean i could walk into a kintergarten and chop up a kid with a samurai sword and get out in 25 and the man doesnt break the government off with money that he earned and he's looking at 75! what is the world coming to?

Richard Hatch, the first winner from Survivor, didn't declare his winnings to the IRS ($1 million). What an idiot. Now he's looking at a maximum penalty of 75 years!

does the irs deserve that money? but more importantly why is he getting 75 years for tax evasion? i think thats excessive, if the issue was the money, why not just fine him the amount he owes? in many states you could rape, rob and murder someone, and you'll get out before he does.(in ny i know life is 25 years)

you're right, I'm not saying that it's morally right, but when you fruad the government, they're going to be as hard as they possible can (look at Martha Stewart, all she did was cheat a bit, and then have house arrest after spending time in prison), again, i'm not sure weither or not they should give people this much time, but I think the idea is that they don't want people to think they can get away with it.

and is he sentanced to 75 years, or can he get up to 75 years? if he can get UP TO, he wont be spending that much time in jail.

Yes, of course the IRS has right to it. If you win money in Vegas, you have to fork over a percentage because it counts as income. Richard Hatch's million counts as income as well--- the same as if you got a job at McChunk's and had to fork over a percentage every paycheck.

At least that's how it works in Canada.

XpProUser, why not try thinking with your brain rather that straight up from your buttocks?

You're right.

yeah, and such is life... but rather than thinking about it from a negative perspective, why not look at it in a positive way?
like, what do you drive on? roads that natually grew in the exact right place. no, they built them (they being the government) with the money you gave them.
where did you learn? well, some people, like XpProUser, don't but like to pretend that they are naturally the smartest people on earth, but is that true? no, you learn from (usually) the PUBLIC educational system, which has it's flaws (like the grading system ) but it's paid for with tax money....the government HAS to have a source of income, YOU live on THEIR soil, just think of it as rent, you dont expect the landlord to just let you live for free do you?

The whaty's are what-what? What are you talking about?

You're not from around here are you. Without "the stupid rule book" a country couldn't function properly. Without taxes, Canada couldn't provide free health care and the US couldn't... well the US could obviously still do whatever it wanted, but with taxes there's less debt. Governments and their rules are necessary to avoid chaos. DUUUUUUUUUHHHHHH. So book is not stupid.

Anyway, about Richard Hatch, I think 75 years would be pretty harsh for tax avoision. Maybe just 1 year. Then 74 for being gay.

100% with you on that one.

Almost everything is taxed by the government so they can have money to spend. If you win $1 million, your are probaly going to have to fork over about 45% of that to uncle sam. I peronally think that there should be one solid tax rste no matter how much you make or how you made it.

Oh well, richard hatch should go for life in my mind.......i mean honestly, you were on the single most popular eality ever to rear its ugly head on the small screen, you dont think someones gonna notice you didnt file ur earnings rite?

tis a shame that's wrong.
according to my personal finance teacher: you can be "given" $10,000 per year and call it a "gift" and not be taxed on it...

What, so in your country you have over 50% tax rate on all your income? I mean, in the UK, they really screw us over (I get 40% tax on a certain amount - ie. all new pay rises are almost cut in half), what with income tax, VAT, tax again on savings, not to mention our stupidly high petrol tax, but 50% seems a little steep. Esp if you are on an average wage.

Cheers

I think the government look at money matters where big figures are attached as more damaging than murder/rape etc. because realistically they might be. If the government is $1mil out of pocket, that could be 30 cops on the street for a year, or a new school etc.

It's also because it's so easy to defraud the government, the penalties have to be harsh. It's so easy to claim unemployment benefit and then work on the side without ever being caught. They have to make the deterant harsh and go through with it to make examples of people.

In the UK winnings - game show/lottery/horses - are tax free.

If I win 1 million on the lottery I keep the lot.

In America when you go on a gameshow if you win prizes you pay the sales tax for each prize and income tax on all cash winnings before you leave the studio. The lottery winners don't get the full amount... they get the money minus income tax. I think it's better that way... so that if a person spends all the money on junk they aren't deep in a hole when tax time comes around.

@Dazzag -- You'd be surprised to know that our tax, being the highest in North America, tops out at 55% if you make in the area of $50k+.

It's ridiculous.

55% is a bit high for one level of government, the way tax works here, there are many levels of government and everyone wants there share so i start out with $1000 and the feds want ~20 percent now down to 800, then the state wants ~20% so your down to 640, then the county wants ~20 percent so your down to 512 and then your town wants ~20 percent so now your stuck with a grand total of 409.60, less than 50% of the original prize. its not 20% at all hops but when averaged for long island ny, its about 20% for each.

you dont beat the system. the system beats you.

It's not just one level, thank goodness. It's all of the levels combined (provincial and federal).
