Installed it and half the screen was filled with green squares and vertical lines Its a radeon 9800pro, wanted to see DBpro shaders in all their glory but I guess it wasn't to be

Anyone here happen to know how to fix it?

I got 2.8ghz AMD, 300W powersupply, win2000.

Sorry for posting here, the tech support forums at sapphire and watford are useless. Feel free to lock if you find it inappropriate

Sounds like the card is knackered, have you tried updating the drivers? Could be the issue but I'm pretty sure knackered hardware.

Watford Electronics will replace any hardware provided they reproduce the problem.

I was really hoping it isn't dead... getting a replacement through watford is an utter nightmare. Haven't updated the vid drivers, simply because I cant find them, sapphire website is just... screwed, gives me a link to a pdf file heh.

I've got the latest ATI drivers though. But the glitches happen through dos while windows is loading up to..

lmao yeah since Watford moved from Watford to Luton, it's been like a different company imo.. they're not as good about orders and such.

Shame cause thier Watford branch was awesome.
If it's doing it in DOS then yes definately buggered.

You know for the price of the 9800 Pro they sell an X800 XT

you don't need to get the drivers off saphire website, just get the latest catalyst from ATIs own site... But Raven's right I've only seen large artifacts like that when the cards screwed, usually the memory chips on it

I'd open your PC up and remove the card, look for any obvious damage (like a broken resistor or something) - and if it looks fine try putting it back in snuggly, by snug I mean decent force on both ends of the card at the same time to push it into the slot, they do go in about 8mm, so make sure the card is nice and snug.

If that makes no difference then take the card back - but it might just be badly seated, in which case you should be able to get it working yourself. AGP slots are terribly unreliable, I often see screen garbage with badly seated cards, it really does'nt take a lot to upset a graphics card.

Yeah, make sure any capacitors aren't oozing electrolyte like the ones on my motherboard were , not that I know if graphics cards have capacitors on them.

It seems intact, couldn't find any physical damage, must be a buggered up chip or something.

Pretty sure it was properly placed in the agp slot . I tried it on my other machine too and the same thing happened.

This card was around £110 with tax, cheapest x800 i saw was around £200 , Besides I don't see any major advantages over the 9800pro, If it could support shader version 3.0 then I would have considered it.

it was on the main page iirc, got an email about it with that whole ATI xx days to something special. (X800 GT launch)

the X800 XT is quite a damn sight more powerful than the 9800 Pro. almost 2.5x the speed iirc

static monster?... you did the antistatic motions?, best way to kill a card is to ignore the static problem because you got away with it before, in my experience new cards are rarely faulty, its just when the warranty expires they tend to go poof (apart from those cards with the "customer chucked receipt" detector onboard)

Ahh the one on the front is a PCI express card, need an AGP really. I don't think my board supports PCI express

And yes, i've got one of those anti-static wristbands, and I touched the metal of the case. I found it odd that the card wasn't inside that plastic wrapping you get with other hardware. Thats maybe the reason why its screwed up.

it sounds like a faulty card, they use 9800pros which don't function properly eg not all 8 pipelines work but 4 do, as 9800se's, this is basically a 9800pro with 4 pipelines instead of 8, some of these can have the extra pipelines unlocked using hacked drivers if they started with a working 9800pro at the manufacturers.
when i tried to unlock my 9800se i got similar to yuo are describing (but only after the drivers loaded) so it's sounds like duff hardware, most likely a ram chip as they are exposed and it's opsible to damage one and the card still work.

edit: you power supply sounds a little underpowered too, you should get a better psu, >400W can be bought for <$20

problem eh?
I really didn't know that it's a BAD idea to 'discharge', as it were, before touching comptuter hardware, since the case happens to be connected to the grounding and everything... news to me

@xpProUser: what are you talking about? Touching the case is an antistatic method

@mm0zct: Was afraid of that too This case is awful, makes taking a drive out a 40min chore. Replacing the powersupply or taking out the motherboard to place it in a new case is gonna be a pain

I suggest a bigger case i want to build a 1terabyte system and am going to use a server case which can be found at tigerdirect.com its called Cooler master its a nice 12 5.25 drive bays so it will be a cool case plus it has a spot for a extra power supply which is useful.

That may very well be the problem, i have a ati x850 pe pci express card right now. I have been using it for about 2 months now but i do notice a little bit of artifacting on my desktop espcially when i open mulitiple folders. Usually this goes away though with a refresh still a bit annoying though.

And the reason i belive this happens is because im using a 365 watt psu (some oddball crap designed by sony so i can't change it out unless i do some serious moding to the case that i don't feel like doing) and the card recommends a 350 or higher but 365 is really cutting it to close, good thing is it only happens on the desktop or in folders not in any games. I have noticed that it happens less using the latest 5.8 drivers.

Also remember that everything you plug in or added into you tower or usb is running off the psu, so even if you meet the required psu you may be over if you have added in a hard drive, optical drive, printer, scanner or anything added from the original specs that is running while your comp is will be drawing off the psu.
