er? thats just a gui wrapper for zip and 7-zip, you could download 7-zip for nothing (since it`s freeware) and get better compression, and come on! 940mb compressed to 1% of its original size, can`t you tell when someone is picking their files to give best results?, it was probably a text file full of A`s, anything giving that rate of compression for real would allow you to archive your DVD collection on CD`s

Looks like a nice interface for 7-Zip and a bunch of other free formats (tar.gz?! wow, I think that was around before even zip compression was invented), but it doesn't look good enough to replace WinRAR

A great many people think they are thinking when they are really rearranging their prejudices.

I think you need to make something useful in order for Rich to put it in the newsletter. Like a bicycle with ceramic wheels!

Most people don't bother with these externals, because .zip comes with the computer it'self, for free...

OH! does it? acutally, XP (maybe server 2003, can't remember) is the only version of windows that came with a compression system of any kind.
Linux Distros (in my experience) always come with a compression system of one kind or another

RAR is teh BESTORZ

most people don`t bother because they are too dumb, windows XP has one of the most painful implimentations of zip I have ever seen, an unzip wizard for crying out loud, and it falls on its face with realy large files (or it did up to sp1..been using 7-zip since then on), Micro$oft just have to go through that "here I am being helpful, arent I being helpful?, you will like me being helpful" routine, just unzip the damn things for crying out loud, it doesnt need a sodding wizard, zip is just another file format, treat it like one, whats gonna be next? a "decompress jpg" wizard?, a "prepare to uncompress your mpg for playing" wizard? ,MS just have a talent for being dumb at times ,like their weird native XP cd writing support, what was with that?, you drop files onto the cd, they even show as being on the cd, but they dont actualy get written until you select "write to cd" from an infinitley overlookable option on the sidebar, thank god for Neros InCD drag an` drop, sigh, rant over, they just get to me sometimes <sinks twitching and drooling to the floor>.

I like XP's implementation because I just open the file like a folder and drag the files out. Don't you?

.tar.gz?

Thats what we distribute our Unix projects as at work. Is basically all the files made into a tar file (obvious tar command with cvf command), then zipped (gzip command with -9 parameter for max compression - unzipped with gunzip; love that command name ). Thats been around for donkeys years. And the gz format is totally compatible with Winzip. As is gunzip with winzip .zip files.

Cheers

Would be okay if XP's system didn't keep messing up ZIP files.

Do what now? If you mean the built in zip folder rubbish, I never touch it. Depending on the computer I normally use Winzip or WinRar. Not really that bothered about total best compression (not normally much in it), as DVD writers/ memory cards/USB keys/Portable drives are all over the place really.

Cheers

Odd I havnt had any problems with the built in XP zip handling...but I do prefer using RAR for my own compression.
