Yo,

I've been looking for the last few days for a new Vid Card, right now for what I am doing, my 9600xt is just not cutting it. I am on a sort of budget though, $200 (American).

Anyway, like I said, i've been looking at them, and I really can't decide over any of them all. Been checking Newegg, toms, etc.

So basiclly I'm looking for something alot better then a 9600xt for around $200.

nVidia or ATI will be fine, don't care about the card customizer also (though I hear the most good things about sapphire).

Has to be AGP 4x/8x though, my motherboard does not support PCI-E, and I am not willing to upgrade JUST yet. Probably mid next year i'll make the switch.

-Eric

Edit: BTW, one of the ones I was looking at was[href] http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=322286[/href]

Anyone know about that card? Seems like its ok...

if you cant do pci-e at the moment, I'd wait and save up for a new mobo and pci-e vid card.

whatever you buy, by next year you will need a new one, I tend to wait for a while until it gets unbearable and then buy the best currently out, but I avoid any brand new technology, it has to be established for while before I buy it (PCIe has been out long enough)

to avoid the consequences of global warming, get into a car and join millions of other people in burning millions of gallons of fuel in a huge traffic jam.

I agree with Cattle, you can drop about $70 on a cheap nForce4, which will support your Athlon64 (provided you went for the higher pin variant. It will also support your RAM.

Then just get yourself a GeForce 6200 Ultra PCI-E to tide yourself over; as they cost about $80; or you could get the TurboCache. That wouldn't be much of an upgrade tbh.

You might even be able to find a 6600GT for what you have left. PCI-E cards are quite a damn sight cheaper still. Kinda awesome cause the PCI-E version of the 7800 was £320 but the AGP8x was £410. Kinda just sick the price jack especially when you consider the AGP version has nothing on the PCI-E speed-wise.

You'll also be kitted out with new Sound, 1Gbit Network (with Hardware Firewall), etc.

This way you can save up for the top-end X1800 XT and 7800 Ultra that are due out over the next 6months.

mmm, save up and get dual 7800gtx cards with a PCI-E mobo...yummeh

My friend has a geforce 6600something-or-other, and it's really nice, loads better than my 9800pro it seems, and he didnt spend much on that, just $100 or so, and if you get the 6800 i read that you can open the extra pixelpipelines with a bit of tweaking, and it seems like you're kinda into that kind of stuff Eric , but I dont know what that would do to the warrenty, i'm assuming you would lose it, but it would result in a faster card. But on the same coin, those other pipelines could be crapped up and you unlock them and they dont work and then it's all poop from there
I also noticed in the past that you're a linux fan, and I read that ATI has crap drivers for linux. So if that's the case, I would suggest getting an nvidia.
If I understand right, only the higher end ATI cards support PS3 and the 6600(? maybe it's the 68?) and up support PS3, then you wouldn't have to worry about getting a new card to support that when someone finally releases a game using it

I have probably written WAY too much, so i'm done now...

You know, he's trying to UPGRADE his video card, not buy one that's worse just because it costs less.

@Darkbasic mad:

Please, don't post in threads I make with your useless answers... that goes for xperiment too...

@Everyone else

Maybe I'll check out the PCI-E, my big thing is though, I can't blow too much money off on this (gas prices are so damn high, and going higher... barely enough money for the fun stuff).

This:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813153035

Is the only PCI-E mobo I can find for socket 754 (When I ordered the parts originally, IRC may remember that they had sent me many wrong peices, the processer for one...)... my only problem with it is the 939 support also in it... will that cause any slowdowns? That and does anyone know about the brand?

If you can grab another hundred bucks I'd get a Radeon X800 XL. I'm ordering that for my new computer, and that thing is sexy beyond all reasonable belief for a single card.

haha sorry about that merix... didn't have time to check new egg... i had to leave a minute after i posted for a lan party. So i suppose with this pay check i'll buy my new power supply and mobo, and with the next get the vid card.

Still looking for any suggestions in products though... now that i'm leaning into PCI-E, i have no clue what to look for.

Ok, Think I have chosen what I am doing...

This week i'll order:

Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135190
Powersupply:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817167010

And then the next pay will be:
Vid Card:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102589

And i'll look into getting a new monitor over the next few weeks while i'm at it. This is planned to be my last PC upgrade for this PC till i decide to get a whole new setup.

-Eric

And to note, All of this should be done and upgraded and ready for F.E.A.R.'s release on Oct 18...
