I'm not being stupid. I don't like the fact that everyone seemed to gang up on DBM there. Sure he's a bit odd in the irc room, but that doesn't change the fact that he's new to this, clearly. He deserves a chance like anyone else.

However, DBM, you must avoid degrading those who you match, for it degrades the self.

Hi,

I've locked the original thread. While I can see why you received some of those comments, there were enough of them to make the point.

I've no real idea why some of the replies were as harsh as they were, that isn't typical of the people posting them, so I can only assume (as someone in the thread said) it was due to other flaming / hype around here and in IRC. Unfortunately, you've now experienced the backlash of this, but perhaps can learn from it.

Really you shouldn't have used "GTA" anywhere in the subject or game title! At least not for another 5 or 6 versions yet. It built up FAR too many expectations. When you claim to imitate one of the best, people sort of expect that. I guess right about now you're starting to appreciate just how bloody hard it is to make a game

Even so, it's a weak person who gives up after falling at the first hurdle. Sod 'em, and try it again.

I wouldn't say he "encouraged it all". But it is my policy that all mods here are entitled to their own opinions, they don't have to be "custodians of peace" or any such (and they don't work for TGC). So the mod status has no bearing on the weight of the comments.

I find it far more likely the comments came from opinions built up over IRC rather than your actual game, but perhaps Mouse can clarify.

I'm sorry if I have been hard on you in my reply, forgive me for that.

I'm just tired of all these people on the forums who have had done the same to me, so I get pretty 'agitated' quickly on these forums.

Nevertheless, I do hope that one day you will make a game as good or better than GTA, I like sucessfull people. However you should ignore a$$ wipes like these people (and me if you really want to call me one )

The thing with forums is people are never what they sound, most people are negative on this forum because they have no 'Life' and everything around them is 'negative'

I am usually a good person who responds with a positive feedback, I am extremly sorry that I did not, I really didn't bother checking the forum you posted in.

I hope in the future I could become some what helpful to you.

Man, they did hit ya hard with those comments, DbM.

Ignore, forget about the thread, and keep on...

"

Couldn't agree more with you.

Actually, i wouldn't care if ya end up leaving or not, that's up to you, but what really bothers me is that people such as the one that flamed you, and all, keep roaming the forums, aimlessly, searching for the next "noob" to take down. I understand that one gets irritated with those who don't follow the rules, or as such (aiming at a mmorpg, and not even knowing how to do a "hello world" stuff), but, that is no reason to flame somebody, or at least not so harsh.

Keep up the good work, wanna see that "gta" of yours fully running on my pc someday...

"no more gta games"? I hadn't seen one to big honest...

Anybody who brags about their game's graphics being better then another game's graphics might aswell stop making games for all I care.

EDIT:

I was in no way involved in any of this, and just heard of this guy's game from this thread now. I quickly read that game thread and don't blame the people saying what they said. Your game contains 2 sprites, 10 lines of code, and is 36mb in size?

We don't reward only quality on this forum. We reward obvious effort, modesty, dedication and a healthy respect for other people's projects, n00b crap or not.

However, i now know i was a stupid n00b who thought he was the greatest coder ever, and im ashamed of the way i handled myself, as soon as you apoligise for creating hype, and tell yourself "i can achieve great things, but i need to learn more" you will be destined for greatness. But, im still the king of the n00bs, !

I think you've been comforted and encouraged enough by now. But I don't think you should give up your project, just because of some flaming here and some flaming there...
Just keep working on your project, and someday it will be ready for a WIP post. Not that I think that flaming was well deserved, but I hope you do see the reason why you were flamed?

Oh, and by the way. You don't have to make 3D games instead of 2D games. 3D games are not neccesarily better than 2D.

Good luck with your project(if you hopefully keep working with it).

as my fave guy John Baptist Immanuel Zorg once said

"remember- what doesn`t kill you makes you stronger"

calm down, learn the basics, create a plan, stick to it, I know I keep lecturing you, but you have to learn to walk before you can run, you are just too enthusiastic, I suggest you spend a couple of weeks being Mr Cool, study the basics of movement in games, then collision and how others on the forum do things, then start back into gta with a more organised approach, a game like that is quite possible, you just need to focus.

Pretty much. Not flaming, but loads of hype and oddness in the IRC channel, him coming in with questions often for over a week.

The thing that really annoyed me, DBMad, was that you'd been told on many occassions by many people in the IRC to be realistic, aim small, try to make a small game well instead of doing a quick job at trying to make a big game. And you obviously ignored everything you were told - not to mention didn't even end up using the fair amounts of code you requested from other people. That's very annoying for us - we honestly try to help and, well, it kinds of feels like you're throwing it in our face when you make this big build up and then "release" something that's roughly ten lines of code. Ten lines.

I regret being that harsh, especially reflecting on your age. I am honestly sorry for that. However, in the future you should probably take advice from more experienced programmers seriously.

DBMad, people are pissed at you is all, and well the reason why is because well, the best way to describe it is with a word flamed at you 'noob'

Now I'm not flaming at you, no worries, in this post, I won't rip your eye balls out and shove them in your ears.

I've seen your threads/posts, people don't mind you making a 2D game based around GTA, but you did not display a 'commentable' amount of work, meaning, people will look at it, and go 'is that it?' but to follow from that, from what I see, you went on about a GTA game you are making that will be online and mislead to something good, when its just a beginners work not worthy of being in WIP forum yet, and making a 'noob' post, which is precisely what it really is, and you've made comments to noob posts, which is pretty annoy, as hypocrisy easily annoys people, I've not read all of your posts and the ones I've read I can't quote or anything, but what I feel is, that you are a bit ahead of yourself in posts and are a bit hypocritical, and think you're better than you really are.

So I'd say think realistically about your projects, try to be less annoying to people, people flame when annoyed, even mods, I've seen it plenty of times, mods are just regulars with superhuman powers is all, like Spiderman, or the Hulk .

And well other people should lighten up a bit, but seeing that on a regular basis would be annoying to me too, so in a way I can't blame em.

[if any of this has been just hit me, didn't read the lot of the posts, I haven't the time )

Don't forget, guys, the original GTA games were quasi-2D... 2.5D maybe. Whatever that means, but it was a top-down driving game unlike the 3D versions you see today.

TDP, most sense you've made, then again
, how newb slaps is it now

But seriously now, a lotta people go through the 'noob' stage on these forums, and then learn later on, and people flame them, and does build up a character on the forum later,

best example of a name I can mention is GogetaX, started an online game, only showed 3D models that were'nt his, later found out and flamed, then only showed menus, and finally we got a 'real' screeny outta him, now look, he's made a MMORPG engine he's using for a game, and not newb like, he was flamed, so shall you , like I made the stupidity of making an 'Anti-christ thread' I got burnt all over

Seeing Darkbasic Mads tutorial on sprites I didn't really expect the greatest GTA clone. Most of us probably had the same expectations.

Darkbasic Mad, even though i'm sure this was a hard hit to your feelings don't let this discourage you. Keep experimening with code and learning new things on these forums.

You should learn:

Tile Maps - By the looks of your GTA game you pasted each tile on the map individually (that's why it's off). It will also allow you to scroll the screen to follow the car... which will make even the most basic game 100% better.

Search the code base for "Tile Map" and select the first one (made by Pizzaman). Remember... you can't just paste this into your code and expect it to work. Look at the comments and learn what the code does.

Jumpin' Jesus on a pogostick. That thread is a prime example of wainerholes in their natural habitat. I didn't get that many flames for my first WIP and I didn't even have a download.

I want to play your game once you've got some cool stuff up and running DBMad. 2d car simple car stealing sounds like I could get a lot more quick fun than the complexities involved in the next gen GTA game.

@Peter_
Heh heh, I kinda know how you feel man, the only significant thing I posted in WIP got 2 replies or something trashy like that.

@Grog
It doesn't matter how clear it is, it's not like he submitted it to TGC demanding it be on the tutorials page or something. He got his thoughts down, and may have clarified some ambiguities for other users. Sometimes I don't want a "tutorial", just a cut and dry explanation of how the damn thing works, which is what his tutorial is.

it takes a lot of time, patience and thinking to get something to look good.
just keep at it, its usually good to work in pairs as you can bounce stuff off each other, this doesnt mean you can whimp out of the hard parts to your partner, but sometimes an artist and a coder work well, unless you want to tackle them both at once. If you dont have the artist gene id say work with someone.

however you have been very vocal with nonsense on these forums.
for every ten minutes on the fourm you waist with silly notes you could of learnt
about arrays or types or typed arrays into the 5th dimension etc..

keep going and dont waver from the target.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

sigh! you still don`t listen to people, you just showed us you can`t handle 2D and now you are aiming for the moon, CALM DOWN! STOP!

you already have some media, stick with the 2D version, make a single bitmap the size of the screen with roads painted on it, load some images of houses seen from above, make them sprites and place them next to the roads, add 1 (ONE) car, use the turn and move commands for sprites to get a reasonable imitation of car movement, every time you move the car store the old position for x and y, then move the car, then check for a collision with anything (since all you have are houses),
if you do hit something then move the car back to the positions you saved, if not then leave the car where it is, repeat indefinitley.

you then have something to show, simple but it will work, after that you can add other cars and people, but get the basics sorted first, people will be less prone to flame you if you have something that works to some degree, to be honest what you wrote would take me 60 seconds or so...but work properly, it IS that bad, you need to realise that making a decent game involves work and a lot of knowledge, simple movement is not a game, in fact it is so obvious it is not worth talking about amongst coders, you have the enthusiasm, you just need to focus.

worry about the appearance when you have a working game, for now, learn to write the code I suggested, any graphics will do for placeholders.
