Before i say anything, i am a penny pincher...

I am looking at getting a new laptop for around $1200. I would like this laptop to have good enough specs to play the newest games, even if i have to play them on the low setting. I am pretty open to the specs of it 'cept for that.

Does anyone know of a good gaming/school laptop i can get, oh, and i dont care whether it ways 3 pounds or 30, all i want is wireless...

In the states you have a wide variety of stores online to choose from

http://www.newegg.com/
http://www.tigerdirect.com/
http://www.pricewatch.com/

as an example take a look at the pricewatch laptop area below, your price range wont get much but shop around you might find something reasonable.

this frame link has been pulled from the frameset

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

idk if i dare admit this on here....but i am not much of a computer know-how outside of DB. I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations for brands of comps, and specs that would be a good deal for my price range.

Little Grey Men want your Little Green Cash.
Seriously, most of the time they've got like $500-800 rebates on. It's by far worth getting your hardware from them... because

a) the systems are built for performance, either gaming or working.
b) they have an excellent reputation
c) their technical support staff !SPEAK ENGLISH! and are extremely good at helping
d) 3year full-inclusive warrently
e) Special Ghost Disk (orderable) returns you system to exactly how it was from when it left the factory without needing you to touch anything to reinstall.
f) did I mention they're awesome for games?
g) everyone's got one.. you don't want to be the only loser without one, do you?

^_^ seriously they're great at making good machines for people who don't know much and enthusiasts alike.

Agreed alienware is by far the most expensive i'v seen. Go to tiger direct they have some okie labtops there that are around 800-1300 for a nice one with 128mb video cards. useually PCI express.

http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/forums/default.aspx This was brilliant when I got mine. And it's not so fanboytasic or too anti eg. Dell. Arg, no never hate them hate them hate them. Ever dealt with them? Erm, no. I'm actually 12. Aha.

Personally I almost got an Alienware at the time, but then saw the same chassis was used by a ton of companies. And the Alienware wasn't even the fastest with the same setup at the time. AJP and RockDirect were faster (in the UK). And they were a fair bit cheaper. But you didn't get Alien eye settings in the BIOS Theb again the Alienware didn't have the X-Black-like screen (like Sony) that came with the Rockdirect.

Cheers

Just found this laptop on ebay (there is about 4 of them he is selling)..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Acer-Aspire-1522WLMi-Laptop-AMD-Athlon-64_W0QQitemZ6806272369QQcategoryZ26266QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Specs:
AMD Mobile Athlon 64 3000+
512mb RAM
60GB Hard Drive
DVD-RW
NVidia GeForce FX Go5700 - AGP 8x

Looks like a decent spec for that price!

If I had the money I would get one... (shipping may be a problem tho?)

uh? my Acer came with just that, you insert the DVD at boot and it restores windows and all the default apps after reformatting the drive, I thought most machines where like that.

we know where area 51 is, but where are areas 1 to 50?, and what do they do there?.

And my Dell. And my friend's Acer. And my Evesham. And my Savastore. Pretty much most companies I've dealt with in the last 5 years or so. In fact most of the time you don't get the operating system on a seperate disk, you just get the recovery disk that contains everything. I had to pay an extra £20 to get the stand alone XP Pro disk with one machine (which was lucky as the standard setup was really bad, and was easier to reformat and install).

Oh, and it's not that great, esp. if you massively change your hardware over the years. Never actually used a recovery disk, but would be a git on a desktop. Laptop not so bad, as hardware upgrades are normally minimal.

There was a bit of a hoo hah over here when most companies stopped supplying a windows xp disc with their comps. Instead they just whack a system restore in the box and away you go.

Used one once on my brothers laptop (with permission ofcourse) just showed a progress bar, loads of stuff I didn't understand and a cartoon goast in the corner. It didn't take that long but that was only 2 discs (told you to swap 'em half way through) I got a 4 disc set with ym desktop and that was a few years ago. I suppose the more software comes pre-installed the longer it'd take/more discs you'd have.
