the futures bright...the futures RAYTRACED!, or at least I hope thats the way things go, photorealistic scenes and realtime soft shadows , then they are going on about PPU`s (physics processing units) on other sites, some have been made, and once you make it it will not need any massive alteration, it`s not as though the laws of physics alter on a regular basis.

this raytraceing board is just a development project, but I think this is the way graphics cards should go, the current ones work the way they do because we couldn`t handle the processing any other way when they where first developed, and we have stuck to polygons and vertices out of inertia (if it aint broke don`t fix it), but if they develop chips like this far enough we can say goodby to flakey rendering and lights that pass through walls and hello to soft shadows, translucent objects, volumetric fog, realtime lighting and caustics with not a blip in the framerate

why do they say Aliens are gonna be friendly?, surely the agressive ones wipe out the peaceloving ones, so all you have left out there are crazed flesh eating interstellar monsters.

I don't know what any of that means, but these are some mighty fine sunflowers

We're already at the point where Raytracing will only provide a minor IQ over the Shader tricks that have been devised.
So really this is about 5years too late.

All the game examples they gave are still using traditional polygons (mostly the Quake 3 engine by the look of things) but just adding imroved lighting & shadowing. I didn't see anything there not already done in games available today through shaders? Although maybe this does it more efficiently? I've got no idea

The PPUs are already out there

Unreal have incorporated PPU support into the Unreal 3 Engine. As far as I can work out, it uses a software engine that can be switched to the hardware version of the same code as and when the PPU becomes available in your system.

Wonder where the PPU would go...on a PCI board, as part of the graphics card, or will it need a new motherboard design?

PCI most likely.
The Revolution is said to be the only machine set to incorporate the PPU, which also would suggest that Unreal 3 is likely to be on that platform as well.

Some interesting technology.

PCI express I imagine. Or is that just for graphics cards? Strange name if it is.

My signature has been erased by me because it's LARGE.

PCI Express is generic.

I wonder how far they've gotten on that Physics chip.

Sig changed for lagging up browsers.

I thought Raven claimed to understand GFX?, whatever!, time will tell.
