Ok, so my main computer has decided to be a complete pain in the a**e. It's now decided to stop loading Explorer. Not IE, just Explorer. So no browsing folders etc. Safe mode has it working fine. This is all in XP Pro.

Oh, and all spyware and virus checks are now clean with no success.

I really really don't want to format, as it would take a massive amount of backing up etc. Bad idea.

A few health check trials tell me there are problems in the registry, activeX etc. But of course you have to then pay £20 to fix them (99% of which will be completely harmless of course). But there is no way you know which product will fix the problem (if any).

So basically I'm asking what is the best PC health diagnostic out there? Or any ideas basically. Either that or I'm going to start killing off apps to see if something is clashing.

Cheers

in safe mode do

Start>Run

then type

sfc /scannow

this will verify all of your files to see if any are incorrect or corrupt. This is one step below reinstalling, if this doesn't work then your best bet is to do a repair installation (this retains your settings, data and programs).

Yeah, thats what I used to do. But this one is now telling me that the version on the PC is newer than the CD, so get lost basically. Is this because this PC is now SP2, and the CD is SP1? Dunno... Either that or I've grabbed the wrong XP Pro disk (3 machines with that OS in house).

Ok, so did sfc /scannow from run. Nothing appeared (or it appeared very quickly I reckon).

So I ran a DOS prompt. Interestingly there was a sequence of green dots near the bottom of the DOS prompt window. A bit like braille (sp?). They stayed with the window when it moved too. Weird eh? Anyhows, I did the sfc command and I got this message:-

Windows file protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific error code is 0x000006ba [The RPC Server is unavailable].

After a decade and a half or so, I'm still waiting on MS products to give realistic error messages. A**e if I know what it means and I did a computer science degree

Yeah, you need a SP2 cd.

Turn on the RPC service in Services under Administrative tools in the control panel. That assumes you can get to control panel

Nope, no control panel. Do you know what the direct link is for services? Actually I have loads of computers here, so I can check myself really.

Cheers

Ps. Found out. It is %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s

Can't see RPC service in services. What is the exact name it is listed as?
