for consoles it seems there is a new racing game every month. It getws a little tiresome. However you really only notice the big ones such as Gran Turismo 4.

I can't say I've really noticed a difference in the number of racing games each month. Just think though, the Consoles aren't innondated with the exact same MMORPGs each week currently in "free beta"

racing games suck, so REAL game players don't want them, and REAL game players don't use the crap consoles of this generation

I would like to see some more Wipeout games for the PC - I've got 2097, but unfortunately its now unplayable as the stupid programmers didn't assuming computers would get faster and faster...

Racing game are the best to play - they require so much skill! especially online and ESPECIALLY if you turn off all the aids like Anti-wheelspin/lock-breaks, etc...

http://www.liveforspeed.net/

Get that game. The demo is free and online-playable. They're up to release 2 (of 3) so it costs £24 now (+£12 IF you want the final upgrade). It is honestly the best racing game I've ever ever played in my life. Perfect physics (pretty much), really nice graphics and its just fun! You can share setups over the multiplayer version too!

Racing games are just better with a controller in my opinion.

Agreed, I prefer the fast paced racing and extreme violence of Burnout:Revenge to any PC racer - my brother likes racing games, but to be honest the only PC racer that got any of my attention was Geoff Grammonds Grand Prix series, those are really great games for LAN races. But playing Grand Prix with the cursor keys versus the XBox troller is silly, consoles are just better suited, and they can cheat with the graphics so they tend to be really smooth and fast.

Flatout is a good racer once you get into it, I'd say that was quite good on PC and Xbox (only played the demo on PC) - if you'd like a sorta realistic environment for a change - like you can kebab yourself on a fence pole and drive around with it sticking through the windscreen, now that is what I call attention to detail .

(Speaking strictly for the PC - no consoles)
There have been a few good racing/driving/sim games for the pc imho but not recently. Over the years various F1 games by Micropose, Sierra, and EA have kept me busy with the F1 aspect. If you have a steering wheel and pedals the experience is 10x better than playing with a pad tbh. But currently the EA F1 2002 is getting long in the tooth, but there's seemingly no good replacement so i continue to play it. I was also a huge fan of the NFS series namely NFS3 Hot Pursuit, NFS4, and NFS3:HP 2. I could really use a new F1 sim tho.

Also, doesnt anyone make good modern air combat games anymore? Last good one I had was Janes(EA) F15, insanely awesome - I dont know of anything that approaches that realism these days. Seems everything out there is WWII throwbacks or whatever, which is fine in their own right, but modern jet combat is more nifteh imo.

My favourite racing game is Ridge Racer Type 4. The music is exceptional and it's good fun without being too hard.

I'm not really into realistic driving games because they aren't my idea of fun.

Its been mentionned but Geoff Crammonds Grand Prix series are better than any console equivalanet, I prefer GP3 to 4 though.

Live For Speed is also excellent, but again thats already been mentioned.

Anyone remember the Screamer games? They were pretty good if your pc was up to the job. They were like the Ridge Racer series. I love Ridge Racer Games, unfortunately my favourite is probably Rave Racer which never got a home console release, although the psp game has some of its tracks cars and music I believe.

Another 2 of my favourite racing games are Daytona USA and Sega Rally . Unfortunately the PC versions of those aren't a patch on the real arcade versions or Sega Rally on Saturn and Daytona on Dreamcast. Ditto Crazy Taxi - great in aracde and DC not as great on everything else

My 2 favourite racing games of recent times though are Burnout 3 & Outrun 2 on xbox. For more "serious" racing though GT4 & Project Gotham 2 would be my recommendations. So yeah, I'd say more, better racing games on console than PC at the moment

my favourite racing game of all time is still Formula 1 Grand Prix. Greg Hammond - Micropose.

None of the others really had the same feel to them. I loveed being able to play LAN with my mate on the same team too. For 1991, that simply was the height of awesomeness.. (a far cry from having a full 31 racing grid now)

The graphics also while simplistic just captured the game so well.
I mean it was technical, but not to a point where you needed that bloody multimillion dollar pit crew just to keep going.

Probaly also helped that I was still heavily into my sports, like Wrestling (unfortunately american since the collapse of sunday morning english wrestling), F1, Superbikes, Combobikes (god I loved this game called Combo Racer on the A500 was just truely lush would be awesome to see a new version of that now), Football.

for some reason as I've grown up just grew out of most sports. Maybe it's mroe the company I've kept generally couldn't give a rats arse so I'd end up sitting through yet another Star Trek where someone in the red shirt gets killed or something. Instead of the latest Totenham vs Man Utd grudge. (yes I know they're not longer really in the same league now, but they were when I liked football damn it!)

dunno racing games now have become far too technical. personally I play them now for one reason. VISUAL DAMAGE MODELS.

nothing like a 160mph crash to throw sparks and crap flying. probably why I enjoy burnout. it's all about the insurance numbers baby! heh

Have to agree that recent pc racers are pants. Installed loads of demos and not like any of them enough to buy full game.

I'm having more fun playing the racing bits in The Getaway on my PS2 than any other racing game I've played for ages. Also got the first burnout game which I still enjoy the odd race on, and also GT3 which is not my cup of tea really.

Like Kanga2, I used to play in arcades a lot in my youth, and I spent a fortune on Daytona USA - great with 8 players and crazy taxi was a favourite. In my even younger years I remember playing such greats as outrun, rad mobile, chase hq, etc.

I used to sell Amiga games a long time ago and still remember the day when Microproses F1GP came out and we had to mail order off several hundred copies - now that was a busy day!

Heck yeah - My wife & I have a thing that if we go into an aracde, to this day, we still have to have a go on Daytona USA if its there, we've been in daytonas all over the country The sequel was pretty good too, and if you ever get a chance to play the DC version it captures the original brilliantly, and updates the graphics, and can be played online (although whether any servers still exist I've no idea )

The best racing game of all time is Stunts.

Fun trivia fact: Stunts was created by Don Mattrick before EA bought out his company and turned it into EA Canada.

Arcade-wise, I can't pass the classic "18 Wheeler", play it every time. The Playstation version is pants, not worth the box it comes in.

If you want to experience a driving game that was very badly bodged together, try Te Italian job. Dire.

But a good driving game cannot be beaten by any other genre in my opinion. Gran Turismo A-Class is my current tipple on the PS2. Pure Excellence.

I love 18 wheeler! It was too short, but other than that really playable The PS2 version was rubish but the Dreamcast version is 100% arcade perfect Of course its not quite as much fun without the big hydraulic truck to sit in, but you could make one of those! lol

18 wheeler in the arcade is pure class although the one in the Trocadero in London started off at 2 quid a go - now only 1 quid. I complete it virtually every time I play but is great fun, specially when you get the horn!

When I was a kid back in the eighties, I was only 400 points away from the World's Record in Pole Position.

Sorry to leap back 40 posts but POLE POSITION !....I havnt seen that game in so damn long...really was terrible in a classic kind of way !

Anyone here remember 4D Stunts...a old 3D (I say 3D as it was quite clever then) driving game where you could design and race your old tracks.
Brilliant game at the time, spent so much time with my mate playing that.

Ya, man, that was and is my preferred racing game. Loved the psuedo-3D polygonal, blocky look. Loved the bug where you could get locked at the high speed and then nothing would slow you down. Loved the save replay option where you could come back and watch all your excellent crashes.

heh, i'm currently playing trackmania sunrise. way too fast and way too much fun. if you like pure oldschool fun then it's the game of choice at the moment.

for great semi-oldies on the pc you should also check out.

rollcage - psygnosis ( stoopidly fast, play with the keys )
dethkarz - melbourne house ( think wipeout with wheels )
colin mcrae 2 - codemasters ( best with a steering wheel )
master rallye - steel monkeys ( in a class of its's own )

right, back to TMsunrise

W00T! Rad Mobile is a classic! I used to play it every year on this campsite in devon! It wasnt even in colour.. But me and my freind allways used to pump 10p's in so we could complete it...

My favourite arcade racer has to be a choice of 3: Daytona USA, Daytona 2 and Scud Race (Anyone ever play that?) Daytona because its just plain SEGA Awesome! same with the other 2, But It was a shame that Scud race never got ported to the Dreamcast, same with Daytona 2...

Daytona 2001 just wasnt as good !

Stunt car racer was tops. As was Hard Drivin' once you got the hang of it.

Personally my fave PC racing games are Midtown madness (the first one and no other), and Carmageddon (2nd one aint too bad when you are specced up, and can patch it to work in XP ). Shame they cancelled the new Carmageddon game (3rd one sucked mightly though).

Yes I forgot about the trackmania games for PC I like both of them

Rollcage is good, but I think I still prefer WipEout2097 and FZero X for futuristic racers. Still a really fun game though. I also liked ExtremeG but the sequels were poor in comparisson.

Loads of my mates were addicted to Carmageddon - I never understood the appeal myself, but I was like the only one in my class who didn't love it...

I used to play Carmageddon every day. One Christmas I was playing it for 5 hours

The cool thing about it was that you could NEVER lose. As long as you ran over the pedestrian "zombies" you kept earning money. Pressing backspace would repair your car in realtime. It was the shat.

And I also loved Stunt Car Racer as well. Had it on my Atari 1040ST

favorite racing game has yet to come out...

But I love nfs hot pursuit 2. The underground games never attracted me because it was always night and the city got boring after a while. I'm hoping that Most Wanted has more variety in tracks.

But kart racers like Mario Kart are the best. Especially when they use real physics. I can’t wait for the DS one, with a retro cup as well as new cups, single cartage and online multiplayer, and a single player battle mode.

I also like racers where you can totally thrash your car and everything else.

Both good. I was a Carmageddon addict. In the UK, you needed a "Blood Patch" to make the peds human, and not have green blood.

I can still hear the sound of the car repairing itself after a double-tap on the delete key

Carmageddon TDR, the last one, was pants in the UK. Apparently, they made it easier in the US with a quickly released update because it was too hard. I never saw that update, and it was BB (Before Broadband)

I didn't really like the controlls in Carmaggedon - too sticky.

Midtown Madness 2 was good (as was Motorbike Madness).

I used to have Rollcage 2 (suddenly decided to work on XP - think it was after SP1). It was quite good.

@BatVink - you think we had it bad with green blooded zombies... The Germans were supposedly too soft even for green blooded zombies and Carmageddon was released in German with exploding robots instead!! Now thats just plain silly...

It certainly was an origional game.

I actually quite liked TDR 2000. Was good fun in LAN mode - once you found each other.

I personally prefer Rollcage 1 to 2, but they're still both very good fun!

Oh yeah, I really liked the midtown madness games, especially in cruise mode, in say, a tractor trailer - lol. Pretty funny doing 80 in a semi and taking corners not meant for a vehicle that size-haha. Another cool one from a while back was Driver: You're The Wheelman - great car physics in that one - missions were fun too.

Carmageddon TDR killed the series for me... now carmageddon 2... there was a real game !...nothing like turning on pinball mode before punting a sheep off a cliff, waiting for 3 seconds and seeing it wizz off in various directions taking out the odd person on the way and then getting a few hundred quid for it !...ahhh beautiful game.
