Just like to say that Live For Speed game that someone mentioned much earlier in this thread is awesome. Very very solid game. Very realistic.

Another awesome racing game is NFS 3. It's a pity they removed the cops from the recent NFS games, but I'm glad they're back for Most Wanted.

@Fallout - have you bought it, or do you play the demo? If you play it online, drop me a mail sometime - we'll have to have a head to head I have the full version. Release S2 is SO SO worth £24!!!

I love Live For Speed to bits. SO much fun to drive something that resembles a real car on its limits. And the setups are VERY good - you can tweak almost anything on the car!
When you buy it you get loads of cars ranging from Mini's to Formula V8's (F1 Cars!). The F1 car is silly.. You think about accelerating and you immediately do a burn out and knacker your tyres. lol.

I think I acheived the impossible today. I was playing Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec on the PS2, took off and hit a bridge

If you want to try it, it's the Mountain road track. On the last S-bend before the finishing line, hit the right-hand kerb as fast as you can, and straight as you can. You will have to drive over the grass verge before it to line yourself up.

@Nicholas Thompson

Just downloaded the demo after reading this thread and have been playing it off and on just in single player. I had a bash at the rally mode driving the RWD XR GT Turbo. Now, that's a challenge. You know a racing game is good when you release the joystick at the end of 3 laps and your arm is aching like you've just arm wrestled Arny.

I would like to buy it, but I think I'll wait for an opportunity to pick up a steering wheel to do the game justice. It's definitely worth the cash and I agree it's the most realistic and best driving game. I hear people mention burnout, NFS etc. in this thread, and sure they're fun arcade games, but this is realism. It's the only game I've seen sinse TOCA that has proper nose-to-tail racing, which is obviously the best kind, and it's much more realistic than any of the TOCA series ever was.

I also like the custom skinning. I had a bash to make a Lucy Pinder one, just for the sheer perverted entertainment.

Is it possible to play the demo online?

You can't drive a real car with a binary throttle and a binary steering (i.e. keyboard) wheel without serious problems. This game is the same really. Analogue needed all the way to get the most out of it. A joystick with an analogue throttle works fine for me, but I think the wheel would make all the difference.

I haven't played many racing games since few of them ever interest me as much as GT. NFS:HP2 on PC was so-so. On PS2 I've also played NFSU, Midnight Club 2, and Initial D.

For some reason, I don't enjoy racing games unless it's Gran Turismo. I'm loving GT4 right now ^_^ I love the way it makes analog control very important.

I think everyone loves a bit of GT because it feels realistic, needs a dose of skill to get round the track in good time, and generally rewards solid driving. Plus you have a vast array of cars and tracks - specifically non-racing cars. You get a nice dose of production and super production cars which make it a bit grittier.

That's why I'm liking this S2 though. For the same reasons as I like Gran Turismo, but with the addition of a more realistic physics model (the ability to roll the car etc) a real damage model and it's more difficult. GT is awesome, but this game has the edge for me.

Nah, got a bit bored when they kept releasing the same game in different clothes basically.

Personally I just trashed a yellow lambo wannabe with spikes on the front, and then went zooming off like 1000's of feet in the air after getting pinball mode, then watched bits of my car rain down everywhere as a sign split me in two. Ahhhh. Carmaggedon (2) is still ace a decade on....

Cheers

Carmageddon is fun. It's just a shame there is no AI. You're basically driving by yourself, with cars that are repositioned near you everytime you get too far away from you. Cool stunts, cool ped killing, awesome power-ups, absolutely no racing value whatsoever.

Seeing as this thread it called 'Racing games on the PC', I don't think single player Carmageddon should even me mentioned here!

I have Carmageddon 1 and 2, but I can't get them to run properly on my XP comp. I remember getting my Voodoo 2 card and blasting my friends away with the incredible graphics of Carmageddon 2

Play it on harder settings. They do race some of the time. And skidding action is tops.

I have the details somewhere for 2. Involves cracking the main exe because stupid pirate protection code stops anything not 9X windows from working. Is a legal patch apparently (think the makers made it). Don't care either way as I own both games anyways. Then you get this glide wrapper that allows 3DFX emulation, and everything is smooth. Is on my other computer (and I'm in bed now), so will have a look tomorrow.

Cheers

Just follow the instructions. Some items cannot be found where they say, so you have to browse a bit. If you can't find everything then I'll email you the files. Also, if it still runs in software mode (blocky and horrible) then I had a few tweaks I had to make to get it to work (don't run the main exe for instance).

Twisted metal is old and rubbish. Outdone in all departments by other games. My two cents.

My favorite racing games were "Viper Racing" which unfortunately the sound doesn't work properly in 2000/xp, so you have to play it in 98 But the opensource 'racer' is pretty cool, very realistic..
