can any motherboard detect its current temp or does it need to specifically be built to do this?

you dont beat the system. the system beats you.

from what i've noticed, all motherboards can detect the temp.

on startup hit DEL or F2 to enter the setup (it's usually one of the two) and it'll be there somewhere depending on your bios.

Temperature is detected based on if your chips can detect it. Motherboards simple check the internal themometer of the Processor or Chipset.

I don't know of any motherboard or processor that doesn't currently support this feature though.

mine indicates to the nearest 0.1deg/C the GPU on the graphics card has a temperature sensor accesable from the driver as well, that shows it warms up when you work it harder, it indicates in tenths of a degree as well, it also shows you the current fan rpm`s for the cpu, gpu and case.
