It's also possible to compile it locally on a standard Windows machine, but you have to add in extra code (or atleast you used to) to link controls and such to DirectX equivilants.

With the October SDK, XACT and XInput are already exposed. Graphics automatically switches to the Direct3D Environment (did this on the X-Box too). It's fairly simple to get the same code running on both machines. Especially given the libs are just C, so you can compile to any platform and either compile with runtime .dlls or into the executale itself.

Obviously it would help to have a Dev Machine and/or Dev Console, however it's just not something everyone will have access to. This time Microsoft have taken steps to ensure easier movement between platforms.

Raven--- if you have experience getting the original Xbox XDK to run on a Windows machine, please msg me on MSN next time we're both on. I'd be very interested in knowing how to do this as it's much too cumbersome having to wait in queue with a handful of other programmers just to test one line of code

I'll catch you on msn and talk to you about it there.
Hopefully I'll get my mits on the 360 XDK over the next few days, also need to see if I can't convince Game to sell some stock early.

Brent, the guy who contacted me suggest it was the best method. Should know tommorrow what software I'll need to go with the hardware.

That's something I'd probably suggest for work actually. See if someone can't blag getting some consoles early from the retailers, as the machines are very similar. Should be getting back information from then about how to use the retail as a dev machine too. So once they send that I'll definately share, cause it should help.

most companies get merchandise quite a while before release so they can make sure stock is available for release and that they have enough time to meet pre-orders.

often with software stores will have it almost 2 weeks before release. and the gold version is completed a month before.

Microsoft have already told me that retailers have them, so it's a case of bugging one of the more likely companies.

But what are the chances you could get a 360 before release? I wouldn't do that even for my best friend if I were a lowly EB clerk--- I could get my ass handed to me by Microsoft and get fired, let alone no chance of working in the industry. Not worth the risk :-P

If a Store Clerk was doing it for individuals perhaps.
Although this said when my mate was working at Game back in high school, both of us had an N64 and Playstation before release.

You'd probably get in to trouble for it, but this said. What I'm doing is acting through official channels, apart from anything else I have a nice letter from Microsoft telling me to get the hardware this way.

It's November 10th when they can start selling to business's in the multimedia field, according to Microsoft that is. I'm pretty sure I can angle atleast a few controllers before them. Hopefully without the tax mark-up to.

I mean 1 Controller plus WiFi will set me back around £110 Retail.
The console itself even the Core is another £210-ish.

Got to do a contract sometime this month and make sure I have the cash come November when they start selling these things to the multimedia buyers.

They're also forcing things like a points system to be saved from every game, that can be viewed from the dashboard (I beliieve it's something like 50 points / game). Therefore you need to award achievements for game milestones--- but it's not an option, it's a requirement!"

Oh no! How will KOTOR3 survive! Long live the PC!

Why don't they just send you one themselves?

They're out-of-stock themselves until November.
Sounds like they actually have had trouble meeting the Retail demand.

Dammit. I want to get one when they're released, but I don't have the money now. I am expecting a good amount just before the release--- but it'll probably be too late then :-P

I hope it doesn't turn into what plagued the N64 and PS2 when they were released.

i laugh at you all, i refuse to preorder a console and never have and never will, because i have a much better chance of stopping by wallymart on my way to work and getting one the day it is released, than i do with gamestop or ebgames...

Microsoft didn't expect the demand to be so high that's for sure.
Game for example have thier allocated stock all pre-ordered for the Christmax period and have since September 22nd.

Crazyness really.

I don't know anyone who will get one on the day of release, most shops will likely be sold out until just after Christmas.

The point in a pre-order at-least when you do it from Game is you don't go anywhere. They send it out a few days before the release and you generally get it on/day before release.
