i am thinking of buying DB, but before i do is there any other programs i'd need to buy in order to make a complete game.

currently i have no programs so any other programs i'd need would have to be bought as well and i'd like to not get hit with any surprises.

also, is the DB/3dGM/Cartgraphy shop a better deal then the DB-P package? or is it a worthless question i would get a completely different answer for on the DB-P forums.

no there are no extra programs you need to have (except your computer's OS of course )
Personally i dont know about the "value" packs. i only got the DB that came with DarkMATTER. I would only buy a value pack if you plan to use those softwares. You can probably find opensource 3d editors over the internet like blender http://www.blender3d.org and the music that comes *free* with DB is good enough to use until you decide to make more professional games. (but you can still just ask ppl on the forum to make some for u. then you dont have to spend all that time learning how to use the music software and more time programming!) so i say just go for the DB compiler, and only get the packs if you really want.

And buy DB pro if you get really into programming and decide you want the features and abilities DB pro has.

Well, first get used to the language, before you do that theres no need to worry about making full games. But if you do need something check out the stickied thread "the game programming kit for begginers"

darkbasic comes with alot of stuff anyway, and darkmatter will give you everything u need for a logn time (it comes with dbc). If you're desperate to save some money for other programs, dbc is on amazon.com for just 20 bucks but it doesn't come with darkmatter.

3d game maker is just a game itself, not terribly useful. My little brother bought it and he couldn't even get it to run on our windows xp comp, and I tried it on my pimped out hp media center and it didn't run either. If you really want to program your games, then you wont need 3d game maker.

Cartography shop is reaaaly awesome, I bought it, but 3d world studio just came out. Both are fantastic and I love them, but all they really are are 3d modelling programs tailored to making game levels. There are plenty of free modelling programs out there. Also, matedit is a great program, and its free. It can make some awesome landscapes for dbc.

And for your levels, with about 3 lines of code, you can make a huge landscape and texture it like ground with some of the included textures in dbc.

and silent is right, if you think you're gonna want to get into programming, save yourself a couple of bucks and buy dbpro. You will later anyway if u get into this.

Good luck, hope htis helps.

thank you all for the advise, i'l see about ordering the DBP for now and see if i need the others later. never now, might just flop. from the code i'v seen in other forum posts it functions close to C++, if not with more precise commands.

and last time i was on i hadn't even seen the beginners guide on the forums or that one for sell, between those and the forum itself DB shouldn't be too diffcult to learn.

thank you all again.

another question though,

nothing smart, just wanting to know. i started playing dungeon keeper last night and was wondering if DarkBasic could create the mixed RTS/FPS (though it's more of a slasher then a shooter) gameplay that DK had?

thanks
