Hi
Been a while since I was here - just started uni last week too. I brought a laptop a few days ago. It's a HP Compaq nc4010 - the specs aren't amazing (1.6Ghz Pent. M, 512MB Ram, 40Gb HD, 32MB Ati graphics) But it is nice and compact (12") and lightweight and has wireless internet built in which is handy. Anyway enough about that, the point why I'm posting here is because I brought it second hand at a computer fair (£420 with a case), and it came with windows xp pro installed, but didn't come with a windows CD. Now, when I right click on my computer, go to properties it says windows is registered to 'Kuhmani', the name of the bloke who owned it before. OK so it's not the end of the world, but if there is some way to change this (Apart from wiping the hard drive and reinstalling windows, because I don't have a windows CD) that anyone knows about, that would be great.

Should be around more now - good to be back

Robin

Also, to double check;

1) go to run. Type 'edit'(no quotes) in the run box. Press OK.

2) In the EDIT app, click file, then open. Navigate your way to the Windows\system32 dir.

3) Click on $nt$.ini (or similiar). In the file (under xp pro sp2 non-oem at least) there are two entries stating 'USER32' and 'REGDET'. One controls the registered name, and the other controls 'further details'

(The content of $NT$.in may differ between OEM and Retail version though)

cos he bought it second hand, and most people are realy dumb when it comes to looking after their system disk, of 14 people I maintain pC`s for only 6 have their original windows disks, two had to buy a full replacement, and one bought an upgrade to use alongside win98 off his other machine to get his one year, one month old laptop restored after he had the HD die, people just don`t take care of the most expensive peice of software they own cos it was free and they can always get another (or so they think...wtf!.... you mean I have pay THAT MUCH! )

hmmm...I don't seem to have any file called anything like $nt$.ini...I also tried searching for all files containing the name of the previous owner and changed as much as I could to my name. However, it still is registered to the previous owner...
anyone else have any ideas?
