A price range would really help. A cheap card for me is heaven for others

No, the 5500 is a slightly better 5200.
You really want something with more kick.

I'd strongly suggest budget wise.

ATi 9800 XT
or
NVIDIA 6200

I love my Radeon 9800 pro

I can play all the good games with it, and it's not that bad of a price

So that's why ATI replaced it within a month with the X700.

Deserves to be Budget, and replaced with FX 5200.
The GeForce 3/4Ti are actually oddly powerful cards considering.

The FX-Series on the whole was a mistake, but this said.. the FX 5700 Ultra and 5800XT both budget now are fairly good value and performance. Although still work the 6-Series instead.

Although the new ATI X1K series (X1300, X1600, X1800) seems a bit in-adequate in the number department.

Only the X1800 is worth paying for.
The X1300 and X1600 can barely keep up with thier 6-Series counterparts... let alone when NVIDIA release thier 7-Series.

They also don't particularly show that much of a speed difference between the X1800 XT and 7800 GTX (the 7800 GT just makes the X1800 XL look silly)

although I suppose it is a step in the right direction, with a new Core and Shader 3.0 support. Be interesting to see how that fairs when Shader 3 games start comming out.

Yes. Quite a few over the years. Normally a good idea to uninstall current drivers. Open up the PC (earth yourself first). Pull out the card (should be obvious, although some mobos have little kwirks for keeping the card in the board, so *really* look at it before ripping it out (don't want to bust anything, and this goes for putting the new one in - pref use a torch). Plug the new one in (plus any power connectors that might be needed - you may need a few Y-Connectors to split off other power cables if you have none left). Shove it all back together (cases differ massively - but most are a b***h to get the panel back on). Turn on and windows (better as windows gets newer - ie. XP is the best) should sort out all drivers etc to get at least the monitor working. Install the drivers for the new card, reboot (most likely), and all should be fine.

Never had a problem with graphics cards. I *have* however bust a few things by snapping off pins, or breaking bits. Mainly because I wasn't really looking, and just trying to force things in. Most important rule is that mobos are not all the same, so examine it carefully (and the manual) first. And use a torch if in doubt.

Cheers

A 9700pro can be picked up for very little on ebay (15-40quid) - and they are amazingly good cards for your price range (not too longf ago they were the best ATI made full stop) - they will do anything you want, run 99% of games VERY nicely Imho its not worth paying the xtra for 9800pro...

Either it will be on a CD that came with the card (should pop up with option to install drivers), or goto the website for your card manufacturer, and locate it's driver page. Also find the right driver for your card. Normally one driver download covers a list of cards. Once downloaded then run the driver like a normal program. Just follow the default settings and everything should be ok (after a restart normally).

Whatever card you are looking for search for it on http://www.shopper.com You'll get the cheapest prices and a rating on that site. Great place to go to for electronics.

*According* to the list above. Shouldn't "Class 1" be the best? If we take the best meaning the best from each main company then that leaves us with the 7800GT (or Ultra which is bound to come out within days of the X1800) and the X850XT (until any day now the X1800 comes out).

X1800 was release 2weeks ago. Typically ATI had no stock for anyone who hadn't already ordered (Registered Developers, mainly X-Box 360)

Public release of the cards were last week, but not sure when the hell the UK will ever get them.

This said, in speed tests; nothing has been able to out-perform the 7800 GTX from XFX. Kinda something to make you proud about the only British card on the market.

These new cards are really a class of thier own... top-end anyways.
The X1600 and X1300 can't even keep up with thier equivilant Geforce 6-Series.

Quite clear to see this new VPU design from ATi only really performs reasonably with more pipelines. Although with more pipelines the changes of bad cards increases exponencially... hense why we don't see even a 24-Pipeline X1800 despite ATI claiming a year ago they were going to be going to 48-pipelines with thier next card.

I'm still waiting for the remaining Geforce 7-Series cards to hit the market. Rumour is that the other cards in the series are likely to see multi-core..

who really cares though... the X700 and 6600 are the only reasonably affordable cards. Leave the rest to people with more money than sense who must always have the best on the market.

if you want to run TheSims 2... go with Lukas' suggestion.
Trust me the GeForce FX 5200, 5500, 5600 and Radeon 9000, 9200, 9550 just won't run it quick enough.

They don't have the fillrate and/or polygon capabilities.
In-fact the GeForce 3, Radeon 8500 and GeForce 4 Ti will out-perform all of those cards without breaking a sweat.

The cards you want to buy really are going to be:
Radeon 9600, 9800, X700, 6200 or 6600

Try to stick away from the SE, XL, LE, etc. versions of the Cards. I'd also strongly suggest Ultra, GT, Pro, or XT versions of the cards.

Oh and for the love of god stick away from HyperMemory or TurboCache versions.

I just found out today that the memory I had wasn't compatiable with my Gateway computer. I thank everyone for the help. I look up cards on the gateway site. For anyone who has a gateway computer here's the site
