Hey all,
As coders go, I ain't the quickest. Progress in my games is usually slow, so slow in fact, if I went any slower I would be taking code away rather than adding it.

So I've decided, I need a challenge. If anyone was around when Kangaroo Beta 2 did his FPS in weekend challenge (search the wip board) you'll know how great it was, and how much interest it created in his game.

Now, I aren't that good at coding but I want to be challenged.
Something like, make a game with only one key control, or, make a game using code only (no separate media). Not, make a vice city clone or make a game better than final fantasy.

The only thing I wouldn't like is being given a limited amount of time to make the game, it's my birthday on Sunday and the last thing I want to be doing is spending all day sat at the computer, if I have as long as I want at least I can make my game as good as possible before release.

I know there's the 20 line challenge, and I've tried it before, it just isn't for me. I'd like to make something people can learn from, and as a rule I find it pretty hard to learn anything from 20 line challenge code (apart from the fact that there are a lot of people better than me at coding. )

So, all I ask is that you think of some way of challenging me, something original. Don't think of something but then say "I won't suggest that, because there's no way soapyfish could make a game that sticks to those rules" that's the whole point, I want to do something that no one thought possible, or at least thought VERY challenging.

Obviously though, no MMORPG's.

Programming is such an open field that it could be hard for other people to present an interesting challenge for you. A challenge for me would be something like "code a SHx/Z80/other processor emulator", while that isn't something other programmers would do just for fun.
Something you'd consider a challenge depends on your current skills. Do you know CC++DBPPHPetc, are you comfortable coding AI\game engines, can you bake a decent pie, and so on. The person who best knows your skills (and can therefore set a good challenge for you) is yourself.

There is a coding challenge thread in the DBP forum, you could alway borrow a challenge from there even if you don't participate in the thread (time limit) They have some pretty good challenges sometimes.

a realistic 3D aquarium screensaver thats configurable for weeds/decorations/fish type and quantity, complete with airation blocks or columns (must have credible movement...most I see are just sprites bobbing around at random).

Make a game that is synchronised to the music. A space opera. A side scroller where the aliens attack in waves that synchronise to the beats.

I definitely agree with Lost In Thought - the DBPro Challenges are great. There's help between other people entering, a time limit (usually between one and two weeks), there's feedback from the challenge setter, and if you win, you can set the challenge yourself.

Recommend.

Thanks everyone, to be honest I'd never really paid much attention to the DBPro Challenges but now I'll make sure to pay them a visit if I'm ever stuck for something to code.

I really like the 3d aquarium idea, it's the sort of thing I could develop and improve as my coding improves.

But My Little Pony's just screaming at me to be made, maybe the fish tank could contain pharanas (sp?) and you got to feed my little poines to them (kinda like the goat scene in Jurassic Park). There's the obvious legal hoo haa, but if I get sued, I'll tell 'em the ponies made me do it.

Maybe I could sue my little pony for forcing me to code a pony eating simulator and buy myself a pretty pink dress, with mucho frills, with the money I make.

Who would sue you for feeding ponies to piranhas??? Go ahead, I'd love to see this. Remember to change the water into a reddish color gradually.

Hey thanks It's actually continued in development of sorts and will be one of the demo games with quikly - in a much improved (and faster) state

Good luck with your challenge - its a good idea, I really felt setting such a strict deadline for people to follow helped me to get myslef if gear and not slack off... I learned a lot from that project

Actually they ment the game that the official 'RockStar' made

Anyway having a challenge would be great, I havn't been coding with darkbasicpro for some weeks now because i'm in new development of game servers oh and irc.

Anyway I would love to challenge ya sometime if you want, my main area is multiplayer online games but I can do offline games quicker as their is no validation as such.

Let me know
