I don't know if this is old news or not(says it came out in july) but i spotted it in PopSci...
http://www.artlebedev.com/portfolio/optimus/

it uses "organic light-emitting diodes" (OLED)

Would be awesome to be able to put custom icons on each key for your game
(or custom letters...etc)

Old news... little know fact, this is also known as the Logitech "G11" Project.

In the old thread everyone was like "oh this will never be developed.", but Logitech hope to have them in-stores by April 2006 (in-time for E3 2006) at $120 (£50)

This seems like a perfectly reasonable price given you can expect to pay that for a current wireless keyboard (from Logitech).

*Shudder* You do realise that this'll eventually lead to people bashing other peoples hardware on the number of pixels it has! Well at least it'll make a change from RAM, Cores or GPUs.

I've never seen that before, but wow thats an awesome idea - it'd be really cool if in the future this became so cheap to manufacture it came as 'standard' with pcs - because then every game or peice of software could customise the keyboard to show controls, clues etc. I can imagine all kinds of cool possibilities. Mind you, knowing me i'd spill my coffee in it, or drop it (as I frequently do with my wireless one) and break the leds...

I think pressure sensors and the Samsung Video Paper, might be the more likely future of keyboards. For the time being, until these crazy guys can think of how the heck to create a physical feedback system that doesn't require touching.

When they come up with that crap, hell that's gonna be awesome for 3D interface systems. Won't even need a keyboard anymore

Also no need for a backlight which eats up the power.

I was going to post links to all the threads about this keyboard, but I realized a lot of the mentioning of this keyboard have been mixed in other threads, so being the lazy guy that I am, I gave up.

But I still think this is one of the best ideas ever tossed into a keyboard, I really love it. Can't wait to use it

I think it would be cool if they added a dial of sorts to the side, out of the way, that you can cycle through all the keylayouts if not, made an SDK so that it changes depeding on what you're doing, like in photoshop, it changes to all the shortcut keys, until your typing in a text box, then it changes to your default language layout
that would make things interesting. If they did things like that, they could add cool secret codes into games, give you secret messages

But now I wonder, how warm do these OLEDs get? you use this thing for several hours non-stop, is it going to start getting really warm to the touch?

I'll give you some toast

If you spend that much time on a pc, you need to venture to a magical place known as "the real world".

The thing that concerns me with these is the amount of cpu usage they would require, if your computer isn't up-to-date, then you may have quite a bit of lag on your hands.

I should think the keyboard has it`s own internal ram and circuits to maintain the display, once the layout is downloaded to the keyboard then it needs nothing else from the PC, just like your Palm or pocket pc keeps its own data, even when unplugged from the sync lead, I guess it is going to be a USB keyboard too, loading hi res multicolour graphics down the standard PS2 interface would take forever.

In the real-world people also have things called jobs, quite a few now require you to sit down and type into a computer for around 6-7hrs a day.

Not that I'm suggesting Joel isn't a solid shut-in kid, just noting the minor flaw in the generalised comment.

ouch...

I'll have you know, I go to college. so that's like... 4 hours out of the house

but seriously, this summer I helped my parents build a cabin, and just last saturday I tore out my 1/4acre garden and loaded it in the truck. and then yester I tore out all the flowers from my mom's flower garden, to prepare for the nasty winters
but the whole time I was doing this, my computer was running. so I don't want to come in from the yard and start typing on a nice toasty keyboard...

I'll give you some toast

Seem to remembering last time that someone said it would be cool if it had screensavers. Nice. Erm, Keyboardsavers anyone. New DB commands please TGC.

Personally I liked the idea of a sort of Wack-a-Rat type game with the keyboard. Tops.

Cheers

Same here...

My Logitech cordless keyboard will have to move aside I think. I wonder if they'll make a mouse with that technology too, like the whole top curved surface is all prettifiable (that should be a word). I know they make a 1 button mouse in the shape of a cursor arrow...
