Microsoft will be releasing with the X-Box 360 hardware that allows you to use the peripherals on Windows PCs with a USB 2.0 port.
You will be able to have up to 4 (limitation of the X-Box 360 controller system, as there are only 4 quadrants on the controller to indicate which player you are.) at once.

This does however allow the chance for a more standardised control system between Windows and X-Box 360.

The system is slightly expensive, given a single controller is set to cost £32.99 and the WiFi Adapter itself costs £59.99.
(quite ridiculous prices if you ask me)

Still is anyone thinking of buying them next month (December for the UK and Europe)

how exactly is that on the same topic?
that is about how the DirectX SDK now supports them, it is not about who is going to buy them.

Fly? What the hell are you talking about... I'm trying to find out how many people will actually be using this technology when it comes out.

Right now I'm getting grief for it. Can't anyone just answer a damn question straight. This isn't about "how the technology works" or "did you know this is now available to develop for"... this is quite plainly simple.

WILL ANYONE BE PURCHASING THE X-BOX 360 CONTROLLER SYSTEM FOR THIS COMPUTER?

It isn't even a sodding rocket science question, or using big words that people can't understand. Simple sodding question that can be answer YES or NO.

I've already pre-ordered my xbox 360 premium package, i get no wired controllers... I do plan on buying more controllers, but i'm not sure if i'll go for a full wireless set or get a wired version.. Being able to use it with my PC is a GIANT factor in deciding though, i just havent gotten to that point yet.

I'm not going to be getting it tho, but I think it'll help with getting rid of all these garbage gamepads and let you set up a default gamepad layout for your games :p

Doubt I'll get them - there seem to be fewer and few games that require joysticks (and some games wont detect by USB PS2 ones)...

If a decent racing game came out, and I have the spare money, then I might.

i've currently got an xbox controller hooked up to my comp, but not many games will support it

i suppose it is the same as anything really - how much will the industry support it, you won't want to buy a 360 controller just for your pc if it only works with one game will you?

on the whole i think it's a nice idea by ms, they are trying to get people to use a standard controller, one which everyone could get, this could meaen alot less hassle for companies who don't want to support the kitchen sink

I don't understand, if windows controls the joystick drivers in the same way as sound and video, and every game supports any soundcard WINDOWS supports, how come I can use my joypad on EVERY game?
I have one, and I love it, but the game I wanted to play the most with it, doesn't support it, even tho windows does already, i mean, GAY

I have a Gravis (Aftershock Eliminator) Gamepad which ships with Gravis Experience. While there are a few games I have that use Controllers (Legacy of Kain, Unreal 2, Final Fantasy), there are a HUGE number that don't. You're capable with thier software of linking up Keyboard commands to the Controller to provide this lacking support.

If I recall Logitech also provide a similar application.
The main problem isn't the support for this but more the fact that it's a hassle to sort out.

What's an even bigger issue in my mine is only a small handful of games that use Controllers Automatically Calibrate (like a console does).

It possible doesn't help that not one company can truely decide on a standard. I mean it's taken almost 8years for the Playstation Dual-Shock style to become the "standard" style. Companies are now arguing over which buttons go bloody where though.

Most frustrating is the Right-Analog Stick; as this changes without a doubt between developers to which axis it uses.
In the end as a developer adding Controller support without forcing everyone to use a standard "you" want is just too much hassle.

This is where Microsoft come in though.
Not only do the X-Box 360 Controllers provide a standard for the PC, but they also provide a standard that Console gamers will be familiar too.

Games like Tomb Raider : Legend will be able to be controlled IDENTICALLY between the systems. I wouldn't be surprised if much of the same code was being used either and letting C++ simply recompile based on native solutions.

Another features that we've lacked on the PC, is knowing which bloody player is which.

On a console you can easily look at the machine and go "Right I'm in slot 1".. for the PC you can only have 2 on the front (in certain machines) then other 2-4 have to be around the back.
So being able to quickly view which linked player control by looking at your controller is awesome.

Another awesome part is, developers can utilise the "360" button in an almost identical way to the X-Box itself. It shouldn't proove to be too hard to be able to create a dashboard system for games so that you can basically turn-off as many features as possible to gain some quite staggering speed increases. (while in full-screen mode)

Yet still retain control over the desktop system. Prior, this sort of control would've been a challenge to include in a Controller system, especially in light of the unreliable nature of DirectInput.

XInput doesn't exhibit this behaviour.

Any controller that is that pricey is not worth it, unless it's a specialized flight-sim thingie with, like, 38 buttons, switches, and lights.

Yeah, it is kinda pricey.
For the GameCube now I think the prices are kinda alright.

£14.99 for the Standard (Wired)
£19.99 for the WaveBird (WiFi)

I don't think the price on it's own is that "bad" to be honest.
For the PC controllers have always been ridiculously expensive.

Gravis Aftershock is still £29.99 and Logitech's Rumble USB is £24.99

This is about what you can expect to pay for Playstation 2 and X-Box Controllers. I've yet to find out the price on the Wired ones, hopefully they'll be about £24.99 as this would make them market reasonable.

Although I still find all of this hardware ridiculously over-priced.
Well maybe can get a special discount from Microsoft and sell the hardware cheaper ^_^

Really? I seriously doubt many people who own a GameCube will not buy the Revolution over the controller...

I think what you ment to say was they're not winning back the 70% of the market that Microsoft and Sony own with that controller.
To be honest, who gives a damn. Nintendo have proven they were ablt to expand thier market potencial with the DS because of it's vertisility. Not to mention how many gamers started by saying the DS was stupid, these same people are those who want the machine more than anything now.

Fact is the casual gamer is a fickle retarded monkey.
The real market lies in older gamers who prefer innnovation (i.e. my dad) or people who never played games before but are not considering it because it doesn't look like it's just some silly bleep bleep activity (i.e. my mom)

So, even though my brother (which I'll bet £50 he'll be using it the day I get it) says it's stupid... they've already gained 2 people who've never touched games or never thought games could be fun again in to new gamers.

imo, that' just marketing genius and why Nintendo are the only company still around after 20years in the gaming industry.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Xbox 360 controller for windows is NOW in stores

Dont worry about buying it if you're concerned that this version will only work for windows though, it also works with the Xbox 360(This is for anyone who thinks it might've just been a botched down version of the controller)

It comes in at 39.99 USD.

Anyways, enjoy!

..... And despite my last post saying that it is out, i havent been able to find one retailer where i live that is selling them right now.. the best comment i got was, "we're expecting them within 2 weeks".

IGN says they simply went to the closest bestbuy and picked one up, i phoned both here, plus a couple of futureshops and checked the online sites and no one is saying anything about the controllers.

Merix, the Controllers are released November 22nd like the rest of the hardware in North America. Although Microsoft have said that thier retails, should start in November (2 weeks).

The batteries (recharge packs) should last around 8hours with intensive gaming, according to Microsoft. Obviously wired controlled last a tad longer

from link 1..

Well, i've provided the sources.. believe what you'd like..

Maybe he's talking about the controllers that -wont- have the windows drivers packaged with them?

I dont really know, but from the sites i've read.. It seems Kiosks are already set up in a fair bit of wal-marts.. I wouldnt find it hard to believe they're selling the controllers.

The driver will also be available via download from Windows Update at http://www.windowsupdate.com and the Microsoft Hardware Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/hardware. "

That second article appears to back-up what Microsoft have told me, with it being released soon. Just not yet.

It's always nice for people to give you a heart attack on thinking becomming public before they actually are. All that has happened is Microsoft finally "officially" announced it today. (well 2 days ago)

Sorry bout that Raven, didnt see that.. although many people are reporting that they already have one and are posting pictures all over the net.. there are also bestbuy reps online who've said they have them.. also if you goto bestbuy.com and lookin the computer peripheral section for game controllers for the pc you'll find it, and if you do a store check you'll find that many of the stores have it.. (and are back-ordered).

Yeah, but this is always the same with any new release isn't it.
Some people claim and post pictures to back up thier claims, that they have such hardware... most of the time these turn out to be full of crap.

Just people wanting to be able to go "HA! I have it first.".
I've got to called up the UK X-Box team about something in the morning anyways, I'll ask about this in a few hours.

You'll probably find out on Monday why this is important to me.

Here's one more i think mentions it with a little more to it..

From Gamasutra, a VERY recognized place, i doubt you'd find they'd jump to claiming they got it like people would...

Quote: "Microsoft has announced that it has made available to North American retail its first cross-platform game controller, the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows, ahead of the Xbox 360 launch later next month. The Controller, which is identical to an Xbox 360 wired controller, and works with Windows XP-based PCs and the Xbox 360 system, is shipping early in its PC-packaged SKU as Microsoft seeks to better unify its hardware and software platforms with similar control devices.
"

And here's a bestbuy link to it aswell for anyone looking for it or curious to see if a bestbuy near you has one...

Best Buy echo's what Microsoft said, and the other website... Orders will be shipped on 4th November 2005.

I'm not saying IGN don't have one, or Gamesutra, as I got mine yesterday morning for development. Just don't believe any of the public will have them for atlaest another week, if not longer.
