Do any of you guys remember the old ELITE games? Well I have purchased Dark Basic classic. I want to make my own game like that with a complete economy system and a complete universe with unique people to interact with and you can shoot other people.

I know sod all about DarkBASIC and um I wondered if you guys could give me any guide lines?

I'm special.

Elite, is the best game ever, in the universe of all that is good and gamey.

but only on the Acorn Electron.

tips on making a game like elite, would be learn how it was originally developed. Ian Bell (on of the original 2 developers) has a site on the subject.

David Brabham (runs frontier.co.uk) might also answer you some questions. Everything in the game is basically created and run on the most simple level really.
Just have to think about the games like that... try not to make things complicated, just think simple.

Each system consists of 1 Planet + Maybe( 1 Space Station )
The space stations were all identical. So it was just the system information that really ever changed and was generated on-the-fly.

Even then I think what Brabham did was create a universe creation model, with a number of chance happenings. Then made an array of the information saving it to the tape and simply loading the parts into memory.

For the Economic model again it just works on a very very simple supply and demand of a single player. So basically the market can't be over balanced too much cause the player can only buy so much. Especially as the Cargobay was a set size, even once you upgraded it, still wasn't huge.

Think basic and you'll get how it's all done.

I started one myself. It's best just to get stuck in. Giant sphere, or cube for the universe. Make the universe follow the ship so that you never hit its edges. A planet, a couple of ships, and some sort of starfield. It's quite easy.

Ive played Elite, Elite 2 frontier and theyre both games that have shaped my interest in computing altogether! I played Elite 2 when I was 3, YES you did read that rite, 3. (I'm 15)

So yea I understand wat ur all saying. Thanks.

Well I'm more interested in making a game like elite 2. Thats was more advanced.

Also dont forget want to do a system where the game remembers the names of all people you have come into contact with. And can save them when u save ur game so when u reload you could carry on with an an ongoing situation with them. For intsance I can remember one thing, a man you could take onto ur ship to transport somewhere but he made it clear that he was being followed or something but he didnt have any money so it was a bit of a monopoloy weather or not youwould get your money back or not. And there was an increased chance of being under attack. Ahh the memories.

I'm special.

Lol, I made my own ELITE-style game in DARK BASIC a while ago...I'll have to dig up the source code.

I still play the Acorn/RiscOS version sometimes.
