Hey everyone,
As many of you know, Pirates of Port Royale (http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=60051&b=8) is slowly but surely coming together, with only really the combat system, and collision, and sub-systems left to do before a demo (and by that time, the island itself should be finished), which is looking like one could possibly be out before Christmas. So, I'd like to make an official PROGRAMMER request. We are in need of programmers for the following:
-Quest Engine (built partially off of talk system).
-Combat System
-Certain things that need to be implemented to keep the FPS high enough (like low poly switch, fog, etc.)
-Collision
-Eventually (though not for demo) Crafting System

Game Info
Although many of you by now know all about PoPR and have seen proof of its existence, I will again present you with the game info and screenshots .

You play as a young man in the early 1600's, having just arrived from England to Port Royale in the Caribbean to start a new life. You've used almost all your money on the trip over, and are left with little more than enough to buy a few days at an inn. You must quickly find a way to make money and stay alive. Do whatever you want in this open-ended game, choose, eventually, from over 20 professions (such as cook, blacksmith, soldier, sailor, royal guard, weaponsmith, etc.). A newer idea (that i think was introduced by Lukas W.) that will be added to the game is the fact that you come to the Caribbean on only a small ship, and are instantly able to begin your life as a pirate should you not wish to engage in simple town life. Should you take over the ship with a willing companion? Or ride peacefully into Port Royale, where your friend awaits to guide you at the beginning of your journey. You are instantly plunged into action, decision, and the detailed world of the Caribbean. Immediately faced with a decision that will decide your fate, even if you should not become a pirate and take over the small ship, you will soon be asked what your interests are by your friend, who will then lead you on your journey to a career of your choice. Whether you wish to be a hunter, a blacksmith, a soldier in the british army (which is at war with the french), or a pirate, all will be available.

Forums

Requirements
-Be willing to make the engines how they are planned (ie: not come up with your own combat system to use)
-Actually be capable of programming the engines.
-Be willing to accept that Lukas and I are "in charge". (I really, really dont want to sound like a control freak, but i just dont want to have people getting upset when they dont get the same privelages or he or I makes a suggestion or wants to change something in what youve coded)

Benefits-Access to team member area of the forum
-In the credits of the game, if you even really care...
-Experience
-IF and only IF the miniscule chance of eventually selling the game for like $5 or something comes up, you'd get an even split with the team.

So, anyone want to help?

Gil, I'll do that. I can do the programming for you, and the save load is done that you needed, I am just changing it around and I will give you a pdf file with all the info on it.

Sounds damn good. Definately would be interested in helping! Could you give a brief outline of how each of these systems are supposed to work (battle engine etc.)?

Quote: " why did u made another post for this game?"

another post was made because this one is about a team request.
the other two are about the game. the first one was not "getting the attention" it was more like a thread where the team was cominicating. but now that we have our forum we talk there. the new thread was made to showcase the game.

Quote: "Could you give a brief outline of how each of these systems are suppoed to work"

if i understand the question correct then i have this answer for you, but i am sure gil can answer a little bit better than me.

each "engine" is written in separate files (talksystem_gosubs.dba) and (talksystem_functions.dba). then from the main engine we simply call a label from the talksystem_gosubs.dba, or we call a function from talksystem_functions.dba. that makes the code easier to understand, read, work with and it looks better. if that was not enough information then im sure gil have a better answer than i do. considering i have ........

@Gamedev: Yeah, thanks, i know your on the team, I'm just recruiting more .
@David R: Thanks . Well, an outline of the engines...
Crafting-(copied from game design section of PoPR forums, and BTW, this is not a high priority engine yet)
Quote: "I was thinking something more realistic, such as anyone can craft anything anywhere, but you have skill points, such as "Blacksmith" and stuff that increases, allowing you to craft things from that category. I think there should be many other crafting professions such as: Tailor, Craftsman, Carpenter, Weaponsmith, Gardener, etc., each with their own things to craft. You would get skill points in each of these skills depending on which thing you craft. Also, i dont think there should be such thing as a "failed craft", but instead low quality, with low stats. Yes, and i say there should be a lot more resources than that, in fact, i have a list here...
We would have strong, weak, and normal stat for each resource.
METALS
Iron
Aluminum
Copper
Steel
Bronze

WOODS
Pine
Oak
Willow
Fruit
Maple
Palm

VALUABLE MINERALS
Silver
Gold
Copper
Diamond

NON-METAL
Diamond
Graphite
Quartz
Limstone
Crystal
Coal
Glass
Stone

FRUIT
Peach
Apple
Banana
Pineapple
Orange
Grape

VEGETABLES
Colliflour
Brocolli
Green Beans
Carrots
Tomatoes

ORGANIC RESOURCES
Hide
Horse Hair (thread)
Meat
Bone

Now crafting could work like this. Heres an example:

You want to craft a lantern. This would be blacksmith and/or craftsman. So what do you need for a lantern? Glass, Metal, Wax, and Wicker. So, you get the glass by buying it or making it using sand, limestone, and graphite (not really the ingredients, but simplified). So you could go to the store, or you could walk to the beach, pick up some sand, or buy it (idk why you would, lol), and same with limestone and graphite. Then combine them, making glass. Now you have your glass for it. For metal you would gather the needed metal, lets say 50 units for a medium lantern, then go to a crafting thing and select medium lantern. It would then craft the metal into that shape, so you would have the empty metal lantern. So then you get wax. How, i have no idea, i guess buy it, lol, then wicker, which you could buy or i guess horse hair might work. So then you melt the wax or carve it into the candle shape, using the same method as the metal. Then combine the metal, glass, wax and wicker, making the lantern. You would also need tools for the steps, such as a fire, and a hammer to bend the metal.
"

Combat-Real time, first and third person, much like Morrowind, but guns are available.
Quest-You recieve profession related as well as side quests. Like i said, at the beginning of the game your friend asks you what you want to do, then within each of the professions, there are sort of quests, really just jobs related to the career. Take soldier for example, youd have to report for training, scout an island, protect a new settlement, etc. Then there'd be side quests given by NPC's like go buy this necklace for me, or even things like, kidnap this person for me.

Any other engines you were thinking of?

@Lukas: yup, your right about why this post is here, obviously. Yeah, if you mean the more technical aspect of it, David R, thats right .

Anything but collision! lol So it would probably have to be quest engine thingy.

One question about the quest engine though - what will it involve (coding-wise)?

I mean, is it the logic that controls the quests and when they are completed, or is stuff like the UI for quests?

Lol, good, because a new team member, hoopkid up, is going to do collision, he emailed me. The quest engine will be primarily the logic that the player will never visually see. Things like which quests are active, its objectives and if they are complete and what they are, stuff like that.

collision should be easy if you use GMANs and Lost in thoughts polygon collision code, tis what I am using for ronin, its written in three functions and is directed at the player object, look in DBP pro chat for the thread started by GMAN, first you'll need to take out all of the FPS coding

looks great, but where'd the island go, also you need to replace this area with the one in the update folder, no wonder you had such a low frame rate before.

well, what would be easiest would be to make the popr forums at this page http://forum.lukasw.com/ which i allready did heh

but, if that is bugging you or somebody else, then we can make a whole new forum on another adress. but that will just take longer

edit,
also i think that everyone will be able to access this url/page whitout getting the "skin could not query" error..

the only thing we need to do is move all the important posts from the old forum to this forum. now that will be fun
