well, first off you need to know PHP pretty well. you also need to have a server capable of supporting lots of users. and you need to have MySQL. thats all i know. i couldn't even write my own Guestbook and im far from ready to start working on a Forum

few people on this forum has actually managed to write their own forum.
so, good luck with this

wow, some people propagandad, eh? You can use php, asp, cgi, ruby, and a few other languages. You can use msql, sql, mysql, postgresql, and some others. The easiest way for me is PHP and mysql, and I have successfully made 3-4 forums with it. You dont even need to know a php that well! I made a forum my 3rd day of php! You just need to know some strange commands, and lots of html! USE SESSIONS! Never, ever use cookies. (rich might think elsewise, but this is just my opinion. If he knows how to use cookies and make them better than sessions, he is a pro, so I would go with his choice!(only if you know how he does it ) ) They have many disadvantages to sessions. Never stop because of a bug. If you get frustrated because of a bug or glitch in the forum, wait tell tomorrow to fix it. It helps A LOT. If you want help, I can.

Sessions use cookies as well.

My recommendation, buy a book from amazon.com. I got a great one that combined MySQL and PHP into one book. That was awhile ago though, I am working on AJAX implementation now into my scripts.

Use sessions to store *session data*, absolutely. That is exactly what this forum does. The cookie is merely a session identifier, and any PHP site using sessions will have something similar (unless they use trans ID, in which case anything that you could have read from the cookie will instead be appened to every single URL on your site).

so ha. Sorry, I am currently Getting the others in business applications. They are very different from this one..business like. Sorry, I wish I could show you! I also have much more php coding experience than a simple forum! Forums, Private message systems...shoutboxes, easy stuff and some hard stuff. Again, as soon as some contracts are over, I will contact you!

Here's a tip--- if you use mysql_fetch_array instead, then you can reference them with $forum['tablename'] rather than $forum[3] or whatever position you need.

EDIT:

Actually you can still use mysql_fetch_row, and use tablenames.

its not too difficult if you have some programming experience. I managed to make a web forum with PHP and MySQL and didn't even know what PHP was a few weeks prior to making it.

this is where i learned most of what i needed:

you want a forum similar to this one...well this forum uses Apollo, surly you would of guessed that by now?

Yah, this forum does use rich's apollo, so if you are going to make a forum like this, you will have to start from scratch, unless rich helps you.

Making your own forum is rather simple(assuming you have scripting knowledge, databases, and know the database management commands), the hard part is making it look good. Hmm...now I think I want to go do this!

any snippets for making a private message box? i wanted to make it so that people who are logged on can create threads for themselves that they may post to, and elect for others to read, but not post to, sort of like a blog but allowing them to converse with members of my group and have their conversations remain in the forum.

Well, if you understand the making the forum part, this should be fairly simple, basically you would check if any person, if logged in, is in the read/post list (probably in MySQL, which I suggest you use).
