Hello, for all the people who write tutorials out there, a new online service is available. If you prepare a tutorial in plain text and submit it using the IRC then my program will compile it into a lovely looking .PDF file. I have done this to help the community and also help create a standardised format for tutorials. The compiler supports images and code listing etc.

For details on how to format the plain-text tutorial file just have a look at the attached .pdf

(Note that this pdf was prepared using the tutorial compiler)

Come into IRC with your tutorial, you need to use a client that supports DCC transfers. Look for a user called "pris", this is the bot which handles compilation. DCC the file to the bot and then type

!tute_compile filename

pris will respond with a message, telling you whether the operation was successful or not. If it was successful you can then type

!request tutorial_filename

and the bot will DCC the completed file back to you.

This may seem complicated at first but I will be on hand to offer assisstance should you need any.

Hark at you and your fancy bots!

I think it's a good idea to standardise the look and feel of people's tuts. Will help people to create a nice library of information.

I don't know how this works, but would it be possible to put smart tags in to make better docs. For example, @AUTHOR "Bob The Builder" will add the author's name to the footer of every page. Or @CODE to indent and colour code snippets blue, Courier New font.

Just ideas.

There are a huge amount of things I can do to improve the system. My next plan is to introduce character by character parsing so I can introduce things like font changing tags, color changing tags. Pregenerated contents pages etc. etc.

If people submit over the IRC, I can then use the IRC to distribute that tutorial and it helps build up a large library.

If its any help whatsoever, I have some PHP code which takes the dbp commands ini file and uses it to parse over a dbp file and code highlights it (commands and numbers... Cant remember if I did strings...)

The system is not written in php. It would be difficult to include syntax highlighting.

Difficult but not imposssible however.

The service is down for repair and upgrade until further notice. If you need a tutorial processing immediately then email it to me

Blood, sweat and tears. And many sleepless nights. I spoke to Mnem last night at 12:30am. I went to bed, logged on at 8:00am and he was still going!

Well I just woke up again, its time to start coding again . Watch this space for improvements.

Currently a full rehaul is in process. Having finally found a practical way of parsing xml in java, I am going to define an XML tutorial format. It may be more difficult to write for but it should also be far more powerful in terms of what you can define. It will be a markup language similar to XML. Watch this space.

Ok, the new XML compiler is up. I will add the new markup language tutorial to this post. It gives me the ability as a developer to improve the format, and it gives you guys as tutorial writers the extensibility which perhaps was not present in the first version.

Good idea, I will post the source to that tutorial.

It does use images which I wont post however, if you wish to compile it yourself either make some dummy images or remove the image tags.

UPDATE:

Now supports lists, much like HTML lists.
Now supports HTML colors.

Im working on more functionality on the language as well as better functionality on the renderer itself.

The new version isnt available for use yet. It will be soon enough though.

If anybody would like to test it then I will pass on a jar file to them and they can test it. Im looking for feedback on what i can do to improve the compilation system.

I reckon my PHP code could easily get converted into java... I might have a go for you at some point. It'd be nice to go back to the language I wasted 3 years of my life learning
