I was just reading an extremely interesting article (http://ezinearticles.com/?Google-and-Sun---a-Partnership-to-Kill-Microsoft-or-a-Deal-with-the-Devil?&id=80165)
that dealt with the issue of a Sun+Google partnership.

Sounds very interesting. Currently there's no plans for this (as far as I know) but (as the article points out) the potenial is HUGE. Ok, its idealistic - but interesting

Let's hope this happens in the near future

Why? Why is it good that Microsoft die? You're using Microsoft products right now, so am I.

Microsoft is awesome! This all started with there server software (geeks hating them), and dont forget 95 ME and 98. Right now they are the best company ever! .net, DirectX, Windows, SQL, BAD SERVERS, but the rest of rocks. Go microsoft!

You assume wrong (dual-boot with WinXP and Linux - and trust me, if Linux could run DBP apps, WinXP would be gone in a flash)

Ok, its not exactly 'good' that M$ dies, but it really isn't needed in the long-term future of the world;

I mean, think about it;

-Wine (0.9) can pretty much run Windows apps flawlessly on (nearly) any platform

-Firefox, Flock, Mozilla etc. can replace IE any day

-Linux (and even the Google/Sun consumer Linux mentioned in the article) can replace Window.s

-And so on...

So why would M$ be needed?

(n.b; did you guys actually read the article?)

I did, and it is because it is a good company. I dont care what you think, but it actually DOES run a good business. The products it makes are sweet, and it wont go out of business for a while. Just remember $100b a year... and rising. .Net OWNS, and sadly cant correctly be emulated. Besides, microsoft does support linux Read news on slashdot, local news, whatever, IT DOES make applications intended for linux.

Personally, I believe competition would be good. A monopoly (which Microsoft kept getting slapped for almost getting) isn't good for consumers.

...but without m$, it's a dead product, and thus so would Wine be. It's caled biting the hand that feed you.

TinkerGirl is right, what we actually need is reasonable competition, better for consumers.

Yeah, but without M$, everyone can simply run native UNIX/LINUX apps
Wine would still be useful for legacy anyway

[edit] While on the topic of 'biting the hand that feeds you' shall we mention the M$/OS2 thing?

Bill Gates was a nerd... even though he's the richest guy on the planet he's still being bullied by nerd haters.

you're a dork. Bill Gates made a nice move a bit of morality was involved (or wasn't maybe ) but look where he is now

Honestly, think of what the computer would be like if Microsoft wouldn't have gotten started?
Office Suites wouldn't be nearly as good as they are now. Yeah, they didn't PIONEER Word programs or Spreadsheets or anything, but they honestly made them what they are today.
DirectX powers all your favorite games.

I'm going to make a quick run through the XBox and Halo threads and count how many hypocrites we have here...

I never said it wasn't a nice move. It was bl**dy nice move, and shows how senseless IBM were But I just found it ironic on the subject of 'biting that hand that feeds you'
