Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Superb! (and quite cheap). But if you're on a budget VirtualDub is the bomb, and free.

Look out for the modified Virtual Dub versions as well as they have native support for some usefull codecs.

If you have the funds, I recommend Adobe AfterEffects.

FRAPS to reccord, latest version if you want sound, but 1.9d if you don't (it runs a bit faster)
VirtuaDub, or Windows Movie Maker
DivX codec
.wmv, generally speaking, gets the best compression

Hawk, what have I told you about speaking generally??

If I were to do any video editing, which I don't, I would use a warezed copy of everything. Warez, warezed, warez. But you shouldn't do that. That's illegal.

i prefer final cut pro for mac over any application

industry standard avid software has a free version you can download at there site, the only limits are 2 video and 2 audio tracks and no saving limitations.

You can actually make movies with Blender, the open source 3D modelling app. It has a video editor built in.

The ones that I have (And can show peeps at the Convention if they are interested) are:

Adobe Premier 1.5
Adobe After Effects 6.5 Pro
Adobe Encore DVD 1.5

And as you can guess, I'm as penneyless now as someone from the planet penneless

But special effects are SOOOO much fun .

after effects is a compositor not a true editing system

Windows Movie Maker does virtually nothing.

I just got Serif Movie Plus 4. It's actually extremely well featured, better than anything else I've seen including Premiere. The only thing I've seen to beat it is After Effects, and as it's already been said, that is an effects and composite maker, not a Movie maker.

I also got Impact Plus which is a poor mans After Effects. Seemed Ok until I hit the Build button. I find 2 hours for a 12 second clip rather excessive, especially when the same app can do previews in real time. What the hell is that about then?

it probably means the effects are not cored into the Grahpics card. this trend means the environment your developing in using that software is not a psuedo 3d environment like in final cut pro, where your actually edting on 2 polygons in an opengl environment, allowing you to tap into the power of the gpu.

this is how you get "REALTIME GUASSION BLUR in 1080iHDTV" and other nifty nifty realtime goodies.

having used premiere extensively before final cut, i highly doubt the rotorscoping and higher end effects in after effects and premiere are leaps and bounds above most serif products.

that said tho serifs photoplus5 and above wasa very stable package for image editing however once again photoshop depth charges it like a uboat in the atlantic.
