For all of those who have wondered what it would be like to be a tree, now is your chance!

Quote: "Biopresence, founded by Georg Tremmel and Shiho F|_|kuhara, intends to infuse the DNA of recently deceased loved ones into trees, turning the plants into living memorials."

Quote: "The first attempt will be with a Japanese cherry blossom tree, which is in the same genome as apple trees. The artists estimate the cost of the procedure to be about $35,000, perhaps a small price to pay for genetic immortality considering that traditional funerals run between $6,000 and $7,000."

Traditional funerals cost $6000? Not here they don't.

I could make a pine box for $3.75 and hire Joel to dig the hole for 50 cents.

That's $4.25.

That article is way, way off spades here.

I don't see the point in using a titanium alloy box to bury someone who can't tell the difference anyway. Jimmy, if I happen to die near wherever you live, my family will know who to buy a pine box from.

How do you know that? Just because they are lifeless doesn't mean they are soul-less

Because when a certain girl said "no" to me, I died inside. Actually, it's just this: If the soul could actually feel anything, then it would be suffering from whatever killed me until the body decomposed into something totally devoid of any feeling at all. Accelerating the process would be a good thing. Besides, the soul doesn't need the body to exist so what difference does it make? And come up with a geeky answer or you are in direct violation of the AUP.

You are a fish, so I don't really expect you to understand how proper burial ritual work. I hope you don't think that throwing a body to a bunch of blood thirsty hounds is the same as a proper casket burial.

well, better hounds than cats. At least I'm not feeding the vermin.
To the dead guy it won't make any difference at all being burried/burnt/eaten. So the ritual is something that has an effect on the people who are alive. Really, if they need something to feel better, they could save the money from the coffin and buy tickets to Disney Land or something... like pizza. Mmm... pizza...

Saw that one coming. Cherry Blossom trees are very prettyful...I want to become one when I die, but otherwise, I'd go for the dig a big hole(dont bother buying a box) and toss me in...much cheaper and I rot just the same.

we can`t be sure we know everything though, what if there realy is such a thing as a soul, but it isn`t released until the body dies, if you continue the genes of the person inside the genes of a tree then you may be condemming them to an eternity trapped inside a tree since they would have never truly died, and what if the tree is cultured to grow more trees?, or maybe it`s an apple tree and someone eats an apple?, is that cannabilism?, would some people do that deliberatley?, would that be criminal?, is it moral to do it? just because you CAN do something doesn`t mean you SHOULD do it

We shouldn't be talking about souls anyway. Talking about souls and beliefs are in "direct violation of the AUP" as TKFISH would say! I'd go for the pine box. I'll be sure to tell my friends about your generous offer, Jimmeh!

it was a hypothetical geek soul , the point being, is it moral to do such things?, I don`t know that they should, it seems pointless and rather more a "how to make profit from grieving relatives" excercise than a actual service, plus it has moral considerations that shouldn`t be left to the people making the profit (imo)

if there is one thing I can NOT tolerate, it`s intolerant people.

The answer to your question would be yes and no. Morals are all within ones own mind, If you believe something to be wrong on a moral level, dont do it. However some people would love to be preserved in a tree...

On a less serious note. Would someone who didnt like you let their dog pee on your tree? Just a thought

i want to come back as a venus flytrap, or a sundew, no wait can i come back as a herbal remedy, that would be fun, perhaps i could come back as a weed, lol. just dont plant me near the sewage plant or near a cemetary, id get all confused onthe latter whos DNA i was sucking up and it would get crowded. Id break a branch if i didint like the nest, oh and yes i wouldnt mind a hollow or two for say some possums or squirrels, nuts in my hollow, now thats just plain freaky.

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

Personally I'd rather get frozen in a huge block of ice and sent to Antartica, like those undead caveman things on TV.

Hmm... so if I got infused into another human fetus/whatever it is after fertilization, who's soul will be in it?
