I'm in the UK! I spent the yesterday and most of today in London. I just got to my hotel in Bournemouth. My reservations are made for my room to go to the convention. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you that are coming.

I'm getting on pretty well. London was OK, I did the "Original Bus Tour" which was fun. I got to see a lot of the sights of London in a couple hours.
I don't dare drive yet. I doubt that I will try it while I'm here. No thanks.
...and I'm use to this kind of weather. It is just as "nice" in Pittsburgh lol
I didn't see much of the fireworks on Friday night. I was recovering from jet lag.
I had my first British beer yesterday. It was very good. I didn't think that I would be able to stomach warm beer, but I quite liked it. It was at some OLD pub/resteraunt that was older than my country. You had to duck while standing, else you would have a sore head.

Today, I'm heading up to Birmingham (I think), then down to South Wales tomorow. I should be back in Bournemouth tomorow night. I doubt that I'll have internet until tomorow night. I'll post again then

Just wondering - is this a common sentiment? I've heard it before from foreigners (Swiss, I think) saying they don't dare drive on the other side. I know when we go abroad we always do, there isn't that much different? (just everything reversed)

By the way - this is the plane geek coming out in me. Who did you fly with? LGW or LHR? (or even STN )

Haha. That reminds me of when I went to England in 2002 with my parents, and my dad jumped at the opportunity to drive on the wrong (right?) side of the road. Almost every time we walked out from our rented home to the car, my mom would go to the right side and dad to the left--- then they'd have a laugh and switch sides. They seriously did this almost every time, and we were there for a week

There was also this frightfully funny time where we were driving and this car coming at us kept flashing their lights at us. We were wondering what his problem was until we realized we were driving on the right side of the road straight at him!

I think it's normal for us to be freaked out about driving in England, especially all the roundabouts you blokes have. The huge ones are freaky because not all of us know the roundabout rules! I heard there are only a handful of roundabouts in our entire country, and you guys have them at almost every intersection, or so it would seem.

It's quite easy - just get on and go around until you spot your exit. Then get off. (of course, by that time you'll have gone around several times )

Ahhh yes! You need to try and get into proper English Ales! We brew some of the most interesting and tasteful beers in the world yet everyone seems to be satisfied with these identical European lagers. Most people don't get Ale the first time around but it's something that grows on you, and what's best is there are hundreds of small breweries up and down the country each producing very different and interesting beers . People don't realise there's more than just lager and bitter, try everything, IPA, Stout, Mild, Pale Ales, Dark ales, EVERYTHING! "Black Sheep" and "Theakston's Owd Parculiar" are a couple of favourites and good beers to drink for first timers.

Wow! I've gotten a bit carried away there, sorry about that!

Thanks for all of the comments. I'm back in Bournemouth again. It's been a busy couple of days work. I didn't see much in Birmingham or South Wales except from the highway. And YES, I meant "down" to South Wales FROM Birmingham. And it isn't so much the driving on the other side of the road that bothers me, it is all of those damn roundabout. I have a good sense of direction, but they really throw me off for some reason. Well, I'm off to dinner. I'll post more later!

Truthfully, the weather is very similar to back home. This is mild, normal stuff

We were supposed to get a lot of rain in South Wales today. Luckily it didn't come before we left. Unluckily, it looks like I may have to go back to South Wales on Friday.

Forget everything and go to teh toally roxxxxoorrrzzz York, they say there's 365 pubs there (one for every day of the year), and loads of stuff about the Vikings, it'll rox ur sox. 1337.

Ofcourse if you're too busy (why anyone would ever be too busy to go there is beyond me but...) at least try a full english breakfast, not healthy, but damn tasty.

I've had a "full english breakfast" every day that I've been here. While it is very good, I'm getting a little bit tired of it. My cholesterol has got to be through the roof.

By the way, I forgot to mention before, I flew into LHR and I fly out of LGW, so I'll get a taste of BOTH

How are you finding the bacon? Whenever I have had breakfast in America, the bacon has been some weird stuff that cracks when you apply pressure and had fat dripping off it. Looks like it's been uber over cooked.

For those people who are interested in "English Food" and aren't sure what it is, there are really two levels to it:

1. The dirt cheap stuff usually involves frying anything you can get your hands on - sausages, bacon, eggs, bread(!), mushrooms, tomatoes, black pudding (or "blood sausage" as the americans call it) - your typical "full english breakfast".

2. Super ultra expensive stuff. You usually take a very high quality cut of meat, served with a side of vegetables - very plain stuff, but the flavour comes from the meat and the way its cooked. I can't think of any examples, because I go out of my way to make sure I don't end up in such a restaurant.

I've not done a good job on #2 there, but if someone can fill in the gaps, be my guest.

I flew in with Virgin Atlantic from Newark, New Jersey. I leave with Continental to Newark.

I haven't had the black pudding yet. I have yet to see that.

I found out what I've been drinking: English Ale. I had a bit too much tonight with dinner. It is a bit slow typing right now. lol. burp.

I have tomorow off from work. I plan to do some "christmas shopping" for the family. Bournemouth has a crap load of shops. I got lost walking around tonight. Turn the TV and watch something! (what channels you got? just the usual BBC1/BBC2/ITV/C4/C5?) Savour the short ad breaks, and lack of lawyer commercials.

Although, there seem to be a spate of debt consolidation ads on these days. Pretty annoying.

@adr: thats the worst description of British food I have ever read and it`s totaly wrong, theres more to British food than fry ups and Egon Phony wanabees, a REAL ploughmans lunch or a Cornish pasty for eg are awesome, a proper Breakfast is grilled, poached or fried accordingly and includes fresh buttered bread and a good cup of tea, far better than anything I have tasted anywhere else, you realy need to eat out more and go for real food rather than the plastic they sell in supermarkets (why is it the British know nothing about the realy good quality food in the UK)

@Wolf: enjoy your shopping, glad you liked it over here, we plan to convert the rest of the world to driving on the right side of the road shortly, at least you aren`t in Paris getting your hire car torched by some rabble, oh! and take care with English mustard, it`s a LOT stronger than the stuff you get in the US, use sparingly.

Dude, you go to Cambridge?, great place, the part I live in is full of chavs, but closer to the center it gets more decent, but not many people are happy which is why I skip around the city centre giggling when I'm around people Also if you have, you seen this group of religious guys who always preach there, when my brother came out of a Nightwish concert they called him a devil worshipper lol

I forgot to comment about the bacon question before. I like the bacon over here and the bacon at home. The bacon here is sort of like fried ham. The bacon at home is meant to be greasey, crisp and horrible for you. lol

I really haven't watched much TV. I get like 4 or 5 channels at the hotel. If I turn it on, it is just for noise.

Well, I have to go phone the family. That is the worst part about being here. Not seeing your kids and wife for over a week sucks.
I'm so lonely. lol

Yikes. Backwatertastic. Although come to think of it a hotel I was in the other day in Wimbledon had only something like 8 (minus the dirty ones). Suppose you get used to the hundreds Sky chucks at you after a few years.

Heh, my parents are now living in Cyprus, and just to get the bog standard terrestrial channels (ones listed above) they have got a 3.5 metre dish. Ok, so they could get the full load, but it costs tonnes over there.

Ang on. I like my bacon soft with little grease, but 99% of English (I'm Welsh even if I was born in Cambridge don't you know...) people seem to like crisp as hell bacon. Yuck. Might as well eat wood. Hmmm. That doesn't sound as good as it did in my head... replace wood with chipboard... better now.....
