I make no effort at game design any more which is what I really would like to do for a career. Do you think I should quit WoW. Does anyone else have this problem? Its so addicting I feel like if i stop then i will be...empty.

Agreed Drew, I'd seriously consider quiting, or at the very least limiting yourself to maybe a couple of hours.

Maybe a couple of hours play as a reward for doing some developing before it - like do 2 hours DBPro or FPSC then 2 hours WoW. Personally my PC with DBPro loaded up has a stronger drag than any game, which is good because I'd probably become addicted to a game like WoW as well - which is why I avoid them in the first place.

Often you have to get a bit bossy with yourself, don't be scared to slap yourself and quit outta WoW so you can get some sleep and appear human the next morning. WoW should be for weekends, that's the best time for it - you don't have to worry about the next morning, just get some drinks(or beers if your old enough), order a pizza, and play til the wee small hours - just don't let it affect your normal routine during the week, it'll take it's toll.

hi my name is indi and i was addicted to diablo II a few years back, for those of you who play I had an etherreal baranars star on my zealot paladin, and many other wonders.
I would stay awake for 5 days playing that game, dont ask how i did that, im not proud of that era I lost a few clients and friends and had to build up my business again.

my necro had a +4 dagger in a few spells, one of the only few+4 weapons.
my sorc has nearly every yummy item you can imagine.
I personally own two lightsabers for my barbarians etc.. etc...

btw i will pay $500 cash for a zod rune just kidding.

you will beat the addicition if you saturate yourself with it and hit rock bottom, or you can avoid all that and give up now.

Hi my name is megaton cat and i am an ex-diablo 2 addict.

I had a lv 92sin 2x chaos claws, 14 shadow dispiline charms.

LV89 Sorc, 500+mf, full tals set, but didn't use it because custom builds are much better.

5 hours a day

700+ MF sorc here, my npc had about 200 mf and if you let them kill it you get yours and his mf.

harlequin shako, full tal rashas, a lot of v108 items as well, you can never find them again. etc.. hehe

btw i gave a full sin set to my gfs account including 2 claws

That is some very good advice. I play a MMORPG, but I'm not addicted as I have taken 3 month-1 year long breaks when I noticed it intruding on my real life. Just give it up and stop playing...

You got a 700+ sorc yet you use a crappy lightsaber for your barb?
Should have goten yourself atleast enigma + 5 soc beserker axe and made a nice runeword.

Sets suck ofcourse. All the sin/barb/sorc/zon full sets got pwned in duels.

I agree with drew...

That's why i try to avoid MMOs, if i don't then i start playing them too much (though i've never actually gotten deeply entrenched... just several hours a day, but that's all the time i get on the comp anyway )

Remember, it's just a game, does anybody on there actually care about you? Will it matter in a thousand years that you got to level 300 with your guy? (or even 20 years for that matter! )

I'll have to second agreeing with Drew.

Something you, and all MMORPG players should remember, is that your real life is much more important than a game. You should focus on that rather than some uber character that probably won't exist in five years anyway.

I, myself, play an MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI (Avelyn, MNK62/WAR31 on Lakshmi), one of the few, I think, that tells you to always consider your life more important than the game every time you go to play it.

Throughout playing, I've used the advice given above to attempt to stop becoming addicted, and most of it is sound advice. I have even suggested the above to other players who were having real life and game balancing issues, and it has helped them out greatly. Try to limit your play time so you can focus on important things, and, if at all possible, only play on weekends, like VanB pointed out. If that doesn't help, truly consider quiting the game, and force yourself to stop.

If all else fails, toss your pc out in front of a speeding bus, then throw a party because of it. It might work...

I used to have a guild wars addiction.

Would spend hours just doing the arena. Used to have a build that could take 4 opponents alone, which seemed great until I realised I was spending ages and ages just in the arena getting called a cheat. Basically, its tough to quit an MMO if you seem to have put in effort and getting the spoils of your success. However, I advise you do what I did...

Delete it from your computer, and give the game to someone else. Don't think about doing it later, don't think "just one more". JUST DO IT NOW!!! Trust me, once its gone you won't miss it, you won't care about being the best anymore. Once the game is gone for good, you won't flutter an eyelid about it.

Simple... yet fun!

Keep playing.

Getting addicted to a video game is the best thing you can do for yourself. I mean, think of how awesome it will be when you have all the ph4tt3st l3wt your character can get. Not only will you look very, very pretty, but you will also own0rz all teh n00bs in PVP play.

If you stop now, you WILL be empty. YOU WILL... EMPTY. And you will probably start cutting yourself and nobody wants to see that.

I don't know what you are all talking about.
*covers signiture*

Anyway, some people play just for the sake to level up, they are idiots. I play becuase it's fun. Don't go on a rant that it is not fun, people have different opinions. I can stop anytime, but I see no point. It's not effecting me in anyway, I play it when I ussally play videogames(all the time). So if I stopped, I would still be taking up just as much time playing other games.
Don't complain about it, get some self control.

I wouldn't say somebody who has clocked 862 hours on a PC game and sees no problem or will not quit anytime soon is practising "self control".

862 hours = 35 days solid.

Life is short, dont' waste it on an online game.

Get your first girlfriend and WoW will quickly become about as important as a dirty pair of pants.

Of course, when the novelty of the girlfriend wears off, you'll be aching to play games like WoW again and will be slapped about and told you can't and made to feel guilty. But worry about that when the time comes.

The beauty of the MMORPG is that the more time you invest in it means the harder it is to stop, so you continue to invest more time which makes it even harder to stop again. It's a vicious cylce and large corporations love that you have to pay for it.

Simply put - what's more important to you - a future career making games and being paid for it, or your next phat lewt drop.

If it's the latter, then you may as well connect yourself up to a saline drip and never leave the house.

If it's the former, then quit now.

You don't have time to play games for that kind of time if you want to make them.

I think the most addicted I've been is with Captive (Mindscape 1990) - it was like a futuristic version of Dungeon Master, myself and 3 mates were sorta competing to see who could stay in front - I won . Damn quality game, I was still at school around then, but I must have played for about 20 hours a week, it's like the biggest game ever (65555 massive levels or so!). Recently I was addicted to RE4 until I completed it, I could'nt stop playing - I actually was on my second sweep (upto the castle) when some turd deleted my save game, soul destroying when that happens huh!.

Well, I must admit I played RoseOnline a lot. But like many other games I can quit easily. Sometimes I even make 3 week pauses because real life is taking over much.
But honestly, I know I'm not going to pay for some MMORPG, because there is surely something free around (some beta-test or something like that).

I used to play starwars galaxies casually, only around 1hr or 2hrs a day. Managed to get a jedi before I quit though

But swg was very addictive, I know someone who failed their uni course because she played swg constantly She had to retake the second year

Best way to reduce addicts playing mmo's constantly is charge by the hour instead of per month, its what they do in Hong Kong And you might save some money if you don't want to play constantly.

I know a guy who stayed at home during 2 weeks instead of going to Uni, just to play Final Fantasy to the end. He succeeded way better than all other students.

Not trying to argue with you, Drew, you're my favorite scotsman, but what else do you feel he should do? I think many of us would be shocked and surprised at the number of hours we've logged on these forums. I know there are better things he could be doing, but there are better things we could all be doing. Like inspecting pants.

i was once addicted to xbox live, not quite as bad as mmo's but equally as time consuming. The simplest, and easiest solution, at least for me, is to get a girlfriend. They can be/will be time-suckers too, but at least you will feel a lot better bout your life slowly wasting away...

Play it one last time, then UNINSTALL it, take the disc and scribble all over it with a marker so you can't read it, then BREAK it and STOMP on it.

Then go get a g/f and a life like tdp said

I have been playing my game for about 3 yrs, but it's purely for when I have nothing better to do. I rarely played on the weekends, and usually only 2-3 hours on weekdays. So total time would be a lot, but I unlike many people I know, have kept my real life ahead of the game. Yes 3 yrs sounds like a lot of time, which it is, but I don't think I have a problem, because I've been playing games like Sonic longer. People just seem to point out hardcore MMORPG players as having a problem quicker then they would a console gamer. But I think it is equally a problem in both situations. If at any point you are willing to put a game ahead of your real life, your gaming rights should be revoked, your consoles shot, and your computers gaming capabilities crippled. Honestly, you can play your games as much as you want, but if you begin to play more then 3 hours a day, and every single day, you have serious issues. My advice to those who play games 8+ hours a day in simple steps:

1) Throw out gaming system
2) Have someone hide your computer for a few weeks
3) Make a great effort to get a girlfriend
4) If you return to gaming at all, limit yourself
5) Realize that LIFE is much more important than GAMES and you seriously need to get out of the house and visit with REAL people who you know, that care about you. If you spend all your time talking to people you dont know, you will become very socially crippled, and it is not worth the hundreds of hours of enjoyment that you might get from playing for 8 or more hours a day. Just give it up, video games are NOT worth it...

If you stand not beside me, then I assume you to be my enemy.

Hmmm.... good point. I've played Soldat for 3+ years, but only on weekends, and rarely for more than four hours. Now I've finally given it up, but not because I was dangerously addicted or anything, it's just that after mastering every weapon (and I mean mastering like totally PWNING, seriously, I was kickarse, frequently pwned the AWH clan on their server. For those wondering, AWH is a quite exclusive clan in which you can't get in if you get more than 10 kills less (aka nubbed) than any of the clan members on their server. I was the one nubbing the awh clan, not the other way around [/bragging]) I just gave up on it because I started finding it boring.
