Ok, I'm making a browser application for kids at my local school*, with the mission to make it easy to use and generally friendly. However, it needs to double up as an every day browser too, so I thought "why not get some tips for features etc?"

So, I need annoyances, and things you really hate about your browser - or even features you'd love to see in a future version of IE/firefox etc.

Thanks in advance

*Incidentally, this browser is also able to bypass the cruddy filter progran, and access banned sites that have been banned by the IT dept. for no real reason. Pure coincidence though...

I hate the fact you can see porn with them. Your browser should check images for excessive amounts of skin tone and not render them.

That was actually something I considered designing for my final University project, but I thought the presentation in front of the faculty might be a little creepy.

And the fact that the technology is incredibly difficult to do accurately :-P

Well I find that Firefox's browser's tabs are good but the pop-up blocker doesn't work that well for me. IE gets all popups. But I still like firefox cause it bypasses the school's proxy server.

We had the internet but we couldn't use it due to:
a) there were 60 peopel simultaneously sharing a 64Kb ISDN line
b) the clients were 486's running Windows 98SE with 16Mb RAM running in 16 colors
c) The mice had no balls (so to speak). They had been previously used to throw at people.
d) Google had an index of about 4 sites

As for the browser:
1) Stability
2) CORRECT RENDERING!!! (that is, dont use the IE engine)
3) Speed
4) Skinnable
5) Tabs
6) Plugins

In fact - why not just teach the kids to use Firefox or Flock?!

Amen, I'd love people to write apps now-a-days that just do the thing you want in a simple way. Remember the days when programmers used to try and keep memory use low and didn't bloat their apps? The reason people use Winamp instead of Real Player or WMP, is that it's a clean little app that does what you want efficiently and without a hassle.

... oh and tabbed browsing too.

Nope, I never access from school because the connection sucks. As well
as my school computers. They have Linux and run on computers intended for windows, built by microsoft in 1995. Oh ya and they have a record breaking low of only 96mb of Ram You could probably imagine what we do at computer class. We type and type and type for no specific point.
All those tha have fast computers at school are lucky....

At my school the Internet connection was very fast. We also used brand new Dell computers runnin Windows XP Pro. Maybe my school had extra funding. And I would like a browser that blocks all popups by default. I don't like tweaking something to get it to do what I want.

You can't just look for the color, as a close-up shot of someone's face would count as 'excessive amounts of skin tone'.
And new websites would open up offering free high-rez grayscale porn

Well, according to the people who check my website, they mostly use IE, so I believe, when creating a website, it has also to look neat on that browser.

But I realised a funny thing on Apollo :
You can see the "Get Firefox" icon at the bottom of the page. But now check the peoples with a homepage : the symbol of IE.

i like it how browsers actually can connect to teh internet.
you should add that function in your browser

you should make it possible to not only view images and movies, but 3d objects as well. and you should be able to save any image format to any other image format, any object to any other object format.

also make it possible to play games with your browser, like steam.

ps. i want 70% of any income for these ideas

Why not make a 3D web browser. You wouldn't need to do the parsing, IE or something do that for you, but you could do some neat graphical effects.

Instead of tabbed viewing, have them on textured planes, or as different sides of a rotatable cube.

You could do some bump mapping where text is found to make the writing rise out of the page.

Could have a light source going around with the cursor so you don't get distracted by the slightly darker pop ups etc.

Speaking of pop-ups, they could literally pop up and off of the page and be dragged to one side.

Could ripple the plane object (mesh deformation) to show when the page is loading.

Might be pointless, but it would certainly look cool and engage the children.

Simple... yet fun!

My school got an additional $30,000 fromt he government because the governments public education budget somehow got bloated and they came to our school first since we were the best in the state and of course all $30,000 went straight to the computer department since they keep of list of things they would buy if they had enough money posted on the door to all of their offices.

Anyone know of good HTML controls that can be used in .NEt except from the ones bundled with VS? eg. Not the IE one.

My search on Google is proving fruitless
