Hi there

I know that this topic is way off the subject of programming but, I was hoping someone could help me.

I have a Sony VHS Recorder and it's is set on SP (Short Play) I would like to set it to Long Play (LP) but I don't know how since the manual is unavailable and the recorder doesn't have a direct button that changes modes.

Please help

Thanks

You'll need to buy a universal remote. (or a remote specifically for your vcr, but you can get a universal remote, prolly for less than 10 bucks)

http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=51&NAVDISP=homeav

find your model and then click the manuals tab, this trick works for most electronics goods BTW, before I buy anything I look up the manual online to make sure it does what I expect of it (I would expect it to be inside the main menu under settings or configuration tho)

Well, firstly, NTSC is nothing to do with SP/LP, but I thought you would know that! NTSC is the format us people use (60Hz, lower res.) in North America, Canada and some other places. PAL (50Hz, higher res.) is the alternative, which is used in Europe, Australia and places like that.

As for changing to LP, I have no idea. Go to the main menu (there should be a menu button on your remote) and surf through the settings on that. You may come up with something in regards to it.

try finding one off the sony site that looks like yours and see if the manual has the same screens and stages in it, I can`t think they bother to write a new OS for every VCR they make, several must share the same controls, you could also look for one that has the same remote as yours, same remote probably means same functions, are you sure you have the right ID number?, check the label on the back/underneath, sometimes the badge on the front is totaly different to the actual model number on the plate (as in specials rebadged or those supplied to club books etc), oh! and sp means standard play

I try something out - the manual I have is in Arabic! So that's of no use to me. The only buttons I have on my controller worth mentioning with regards to SP/LP is the "input select" button, but pressing that doesn't help.

could you scan and post a piccy of the remote?

er? VanB: thats a service manual for repairmen, I doubt it tells you how to work it, just how to repair the clock, replace the heads, mend the transport, fix the power supply etc

Thanks for the attempt Van B, but I've already checked out that site - I'm trying to get it for free.

@ Me1, I'll try and get a diagram ready soon. (I don't have a scanner, my old one just broke ).

Umm... There's:
1. Clock Set
2. Timer
3. Set Up menu
4. Language
5. Tuner preset

Under Setup menu there's:
APC: On / Off
PAL / MESECAM: Auto, Pal, Mesecam

All the other menus are about something else. I think that the LP/SP thing is done using the button "Input Select" but I don't know how.

What do you think?

Thanks

umm..sorry, its got me beat, most devices I know have SP/LP in the set up menu under options or something, if it isnt on the menus then try holding down input select, if that fails then is there a flap on the VCR facia?, normaly you have the option on the remote or in the menu, failing that it might be on the VCR it`self, failing THAT I am gonna have to think on it, dig out my older recorder manuals etc, that doesn`t have many options for a modern VCR tbh, I like my remotes with lotsa buttons.

[edit] after looking at the sony web site, the player should go to lp/sp automaticaly on playback, and you should have an option in the timer menu to set the recording to sp/lp, you might like to check if your timer menu has that option in it, you could also mail sony support with the model number and ask them, the worst they could do is not reply.

ps whats that button under the one touch record button for, or is that the record button?, on all the Sony remotes I looked at the sp/lp was right next to that Oo button, maybe they kept the same functionality onto this remote.

Next to the one touch button there's "Rf channel" and "Color System". The rest of the buttons are the same as on the controller. About the automatic detection of SP/LP - I have another video on which I recorded some 6 hours of programs (LP) but when I put it into the Sony video, the tape seemed to be going in fast forward!!

I checked all around but there's only a switch at the back for NTSC etc.... Any other ideas.

I really appreciate you helping me out - thanks

sorry, I looked all over the place, but I can`t find anything else, I do know you can get some recorders that don`t have LP cos my mate has one, maybe it`s one of them, the only other thing you can do is try Sony support, then again it might not have LP on it, I just can`t find anything about it anywhere, if you can`t set it in the timer menu then it might just be that it doesn`t support long play, sorry, i`m all out of ideas.

Thanks for your help

I think you're right about not having SP but the thing is that the tiny display panel on the video (where it shows the time of the video etc...) has the "LP" letters on it but it's never lit - only the SP is lit.

Thanks again Do you happen to have the sony support e-mail/contact numbers with you? Please post them if you do.

Thanks

you can get them off the link I posted originaly, but seriously, I wouldn`t place too much hope in what you can see unlit on the facia, often several different models have the same front panel but different parts have a backlight according to the model, same with some LCD displays, you might have a MP3 or cd player, if you look carefully at the display you can often see status symbols and words for functions that the device you have doesn`t actualy have, but the more expensive one does, it`s just cheaper to make one display or facia panel and just light the sections up you use than to make several panels, one for each machine, where the only difference would be (for example) LP.

I think you want the "contact sony support" button, bottom left.
