Hi there

I decided to open up a thread on reviews of recent or old PC games that you've played and what makes them so great or not so great - hopefully this will help us all in making better games.

Feel free to throw in custom reviews

Here's my review on Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza

Graphics: 4.5/5. Excellent graphics but sometimes a little chunky and awkward

Sound: 5/5. Very realistic sound effects.

Weapon Realism: 5/5. Weapons are quite accurately depicted from reality.

Physics System: 3/5. Good overall physics system but sometimes jerky.

Collision System: 1/5. Horrible collision system - I can't even get past the vent system level. Very improfessional.

Gameplay: 3/5. Except for the recurrent frustration at being stuck behind an open door (yes, the door was open but I can't pass through it), gameplay is actually quite fun sometimes.

Features: 4/5. Very good display of newish features such as wire cutters, fire extinguishers etc...

HUD: 4/5. Suits the mood and doesn't take up too much screen space. The targeting reticule could have been more accurately depicted.

Control: 4/5. Weapon switching is sometimes sluggish which is frustrating especially when your back is being fired upon.

Story: N/A

Music: 4/5. Well suited to the mood but nothing special.

Overall: 72%. An excellent attempt and quite good gameplay at times but lacking in professionalism and the solidity of games that perfect the components that seem unimportant but play a vital in keeping the game alive and moving. Games have already used the FPS components on display but have done it with a sterner backing such as a good engine, accurate collision data etc.
Recommended Purchase Price: under 10 pounds

The Movies

Graphics:5/5. It looks just as good in-game as it does in your films.

Sound:4/5. Good, but repetitive after 4-5 hours

Weapon Realism:0/5. No weapons.

Physics system:0/5. No physics.

Collision system:2/5. Good when just in clothes, but when in monster costume the object they hold goes inside.

Gameplay:4/5. Could be faster paced, but a good click-and-drag interface is always good.

Features:4/5. Very good, but don't know how to explain it.

HUD:5/5. Very good to pull your stars out of the HUD itself, saves valuble time!

Control:5/5. I love click-and-drag interfaces.

Story:N/A

Music:3/5. The DJ's are very comedic, but that PA voice p*sses me off after a while.

overall:89%. Very nice break from such mindless, violent titles such as Half-Life 2 and GTA, yet lacks in some key areas.
reccomended purchase price: it's worth and arm and a leg, but you can get it for $49.99

I say exactly what's on my mind, like "Imagine your grandpa in a speedo" or "I eat Jell-O while waxing the table" and my personal favorite, "I drink bathtub water"

Zombie Hunter DBC Version

Graphics: 2/5
. it looks like a doom 3 clone, and the zombies are so realistic!! the menu looks good though.

Sound: 2/5
. when you make all your sounds by using only your mouth there wont be these great effects

Weapon Realism: 3/5
. Since the programmer is crap at modelling, i think he deserves a 3 because of his ability to even make the object look like a weapon

Physics system: 0/5
. No physics at all. not even jumping, and you cant strafe left/right while moving forward/backward.

Collision system: 2/5
. Not very good. when colliding with the walls, it looks like you are walking through them. and when shooting the zombies you can shoot on the side of it, and not directly at it, and it will still loose life.

Gameplay: 1/5
. Could be faster game. the fps is really low, unless you have a computer built for newer games. this game has really no point, it is just a non stop killing game.

Features: 1/5
. nothing new at all.. zombies, 4 different weapons, first person game, survive mode, highscore, lightning, eax effects, customizable controls, cool menu.

HUD: 0/5
. there is no hud

Control: 3/5.
slow movement, fast rotating. roll camera upside down if you want.

Story: 0/5.
you dont get to hear about the story during game play. but the auther sais he have a story ready to be published. and i've heard that the author of this DBC version is working on a DBPRO version as well. i have seen some screenshots and it looks like it may be the most scariest, most awesome game made with the dark basic engine. also that DBPRO game will be his first game made in DBPRO :-o isn't he cool?

Music: 3/5.
. the music suck. the programmer even made the music by himself, and he have no talent.

overall: 35%
the game simply suck. its not scary. the developer had some serious trouble if he think people would want to play it but so far he have gotten great response from people who have played it. altough the auther might not be very proud of his work, it looks like other think different thanks

Black & White 2

Graphics: 5/5 Amazing. Draw-dropping. Literally.

Sound: 5/5. Very realistic sound effects.

Physics System: 4/5. Pure magic. Though some physic actions slow down the game

Collision System: 5/5. Perfect

Gameplay: 1/5 Buggy. That's one word for it. The islands are repetitive, and very buggy in general. It seems 'souless' compared to BW1 (build this, get this, as opposed to real stories) The tasks are so dull, you don't even feel like the mayor, let alone a God

Features: 1/5 Fantastic features, but all have severe faults or bugs.

HUD: 5/5 Simple and precise. Perfect

Control: 5/5 Very simple and unserstated. Wonderfully easy to control

Story: 0/5 Very dull, first-generation RTS style story. Enhanced in dullness by bugs

Music: 5/5 Fantastic music that compliments the ambience of the game

Overall: 50%. OK, but not great. The whole game is extremely buggy (even with the immediate patch in place) and updates are stupidly illogical (the patch causes all saved games to be erased). Its a beautiful, clever game, hounded by stupid non-functioning and buggy features.

Recommended Purchase Price: Don't.
Especially if you have an AMD processor without SSE. LH games seem to have severe problems with AMD processors lately

Mario Kart DS

Graphics: 4.5/5 The character models are low poly, but the animations, style, and diversity is stunning on the DS.

Sound: 4/5. Some of the voices are a bit compressed, but the diversity of sounds never gets old, and they're all perfect.

Weapon Realism: 0/5. HA! That's a laugh...

Weapon Awesomeness: 5/5. It just doesn't get better than this in any kart or battle racers.

Physics System: 4/5. This is Mario Kart. Don't expect the most realistic physics, but the simplified physic used in the game are used very well, and there's a lot of them.

Collision System: 5/5. Collision is nothing less than perfect. Everything collides just like it should in a kart racer.

Gameplay: 5/5. This is the fifth Mario Kart game. Making the game play better is hard to imagine, and there's just so darn much of it. You can blow into the microphone to inflate your balloons during battle mode is one of the least of the features, but it's still so cool and surprisingly useful.

Replay Value: 8/5. Five different game play modes. 32 racetracks, each with three different levels of intestisty. Six battle arenas with two battle modes and a single player battle mode option. 54 missions, from driving through tires to outracing the goomba king. Time trial mode, with unlockable developer ghosts, and the ability to trade ghosts with other people. Eight different cups, broken into two different grand prix’s. Tons of unlockable characters, each with two different karts. Then there's the wireless. Eight player battle and verses whether you have one cargtrige per player, or just one cartridge. Then there's the wi-fi... You get the idea.

HUD: 5/5. The two screens prevent this from getting cluttered, and it shows you everything you need to know. The addition of an overhead view map that shows things exactly like they are on the track around revolutionizes the game in so many ways.

Control: 5/5. ...It's Mario Kart. What do you expect?

Story: 0/5. This is Mario Kart. No story could do anything but deduct from it.

Music: 5/5. Every track has its own perfect music, that makes you want to crank up the speakers.

Overall: 95%. This is without a doubt, the greatest Mario Kart game every made, which makes it the greatest kart racer ever made. It's also well worth the purchase of a DS for this game alone, as it is by far the greatest DS game to date. I have doubts Nintendo will be able to outdo this Mario Kart on revolution, it's so good. I think Nintendo should pat themselves on the back for this one.

My only complaint is that there's the occasional lag when playing on the wi-fi multiplayer.
