Hi there

I know this is really silly and that this isn't a part of gaming but I really need to know quickly, what does a cavity and plaque look like at the start - anybody have any pictures?

Also, does flossing cause gaps in your teeth / contribute to tooth rot because it widens the spaces between teeth?

Finally, when brushing your teeth, is it bad to brush for like 10 -15 mins?

Thanks again - I'm already embarassed for asking those questions

you think that dentists would more than suggest flossing? honestly NO it wouldn't widen the spaces between your teeth, UNLESS you're using copper wire or something for it

my dentist suggests 5minutes...I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to go more

Thanks Joel That calms my nerves about flossing

Would you have any pics on the start of cavities and plaque - I searched google, dogpile, yahoo AND ask jeeves.com but they only have the worst case scenarios.

@ Greed: Actually, I wouldn't know. Have a glance at my Location. Nice joke though and by the way - nice website - I share your pain

I would have thought brushing for 15 minutes might do some damage, maybe not to the teeth but what about the gums? I've always been told 2 minutes.

maybe you should ask your dentist instead of a forum of programming nerds.

Heavy brushing soon after having a lot of sugar can be harmful to the enamel.

Just have a glass of coke, it erodes the dirty layer almost instantly, leaving you with smaller but clean teeth.

When your teeth have gone completely, buy a liquidiser with all the money you saved on toothpaste.

It leaves teeth with a brown sticky coating. Not good for the pH level in the mouth.

No pictures, but first a cavity looks like a dark shadow, then a small hole. At this stage it can some times still be 'brushed away.

No, flossing cleans between your teeth so that you don't have bad stuff eating away at your teeth.

>Finally, when brushing your teeth, is it bad to brush for like 10 -
>15 mins?

I generally use 3 minutes for each side of the jaw(back, side and front). Generally you should spend more time brushing the lower jaw than the upper as this is where you need it the most and plaque forms the easiest.

>Thanks again - I'm already embarassed for asking those questions

Don't be. Teeth are very important to your health(bad teeth can cause other health problems) and to your mental health(bad teeth will erode selfconfidence) and many people with bad teeth find it dificult to find employment.

Thanks Andy - that was very helpful

Also when you said
Quote: "At this stage it can some times still be 'brushed away'"
, what exactly did you mean by that? Do you mean that normal brushing methods can still eradicate the cavity? Or do I have to brush harder or more frequently?

Currently, I brush after EVERY meal (or snack) for at least 5 minutes (max 10 mins) but I still see a slight shadow behind the 2 front teeth of my inner jaw. Should I be worried?

The dentists here in Bahrain only care about money. My mum once went to the dentist here in Bahrain and he pulled out her infected tooth thinking that the anesthesia had taken effect when it actually hadn't !!! Sometimes, they just make up stuff so that they can perform an expensive procedure . And I'm not exaggerating

Quote: " Nerds don't give a damn about teeth, you can get some new ones anyway... "

I don't know why this should be so. I'm a programmer, yes, but I care about my teeth and skin alot - they're very important, no?

Also, about teeth whiteners. I bought this toothpaste like whitener - do you think I'm wasting my time? It's called Natural White with PVP and SoftPolish.

Thats odd considering any infection should be gotten rid of before the tooth is taken out.

Ok, do not brush too hard, or too long - you will wear away the outer layer of your teeth, making them weaker. Chances are, a minute would be enough - I know people who swear by electric toothbrushes, but it's all down to preference.

As for toothpaste - if people wanted white, clean teeth, then they'd go for the 'smokers' toothpaste, or the 'whitening' or even the 'baking soda' ones - but no, people are daft and go for ones with the pretty smell.

The most important thing is just not to eat too much sweet stuff. They discovered recently that medieval man (contrary to popular belief and Monty Python) actually had very good teeth - he didn't brush, but he didn't eat sugary foods, and he did eat food that was crunchy/rough (that acted as a 'brush' for his teeth).

Also, your teeth actually heal themselves, if you give them a chance and don't put them under too much pressure. So, the whole - don't eat sweet things, and try to eat 'rougher' food (like wholewheat bread, raw carrots, crunchy apples etc) you'll have a much easier time of it.

If the cavity is very small, it is some times enough to simply focus more on that surface of the tooth when brushing. HOWEVER, you cannot make that distinction yourself. ALWAYS go to the dentist!

>Currently, I brush after EVERY meal (or snack) for at least 5

Yes, go see a dentist immediately. Have some x-ray pictures taken, then the dentist will be able to guide you as to what to do.

>The dentists here in Bahrain only care about money.
...

It happens everywhere. Shop around, go see 2 or more doctors. If you are in doubt ask for the X-ray pictures and show them to another doctor.

some whiteners can actually damage your teeth and extensive use will most certainly damage your teeth. if you want white teeth that lasts then get veneers, they last longer and doesn't damage your teeth.

well also, if you are brushing your side to side, you will start wearing out your teeth. thats why dentists always bug you to brush in circles. also, 10-15 min. is a little extreme.....

But don't those damage your teeth ?

Also, regarding cola drinks, what if you drink 125ml of diet coke mixed with 200-300ml of water - does that reduce the chances of getting that film of sticky coating?

they say to Rinse your mouth out REALLY well before even brushing your teath after drinking anything carbonated. because the carbonation actually makes your teeth soft for some time and brushing them right after is actually BAD for it, you rinse your mouth then wait a bit then brush.

and plaque at it's early stages is just the yellow that your mouth develops, and I'm not sure if you can see a cavity before it gets really bad without x-rays and the likes

bread is the worst thing ever for your teeth, it beats sugar hands down

If no-one gives your an answer to a question you have asked, consider:- Is your question clear.- Did you ask nicely.- Are you showing any effort to solve the problem yourself 

That happened to me personally when I was 11. I had 2 teeth grow in the same spot and caused an infection. He pulled the tooth anyway. If I was 100 pounds heavier he would have had a bad day.

Bizarre thread!

- 2 minutes. Much longer will, over time, cause the gums to receed ultimately destroying your teeth much quicker by exposing the unprotected areas of the teeth.
- Don't brush your teeth within an hour of eating a large meal as the enamel is softer and you'll damage it more.
- As mentioned above, rinse ya mouth out before brushing too.
- Flossing is good, as said above, so long as it isn't garroting wire or anything.
- Being hydrated is good too, as it keeps the saliva flowing which neutralises PH in the mouth. Same goes for chewing sugar free gum.

I'm 24. No fillings. No OTT dental hygiene routine. Just simple advice I think.
